The two attachment arms 24 are now swung to position the attachment plates 26 over the carburetor attachment flanges of the intake manifold 3|, to which they are bolted through the holes 2'! by means of attachment bolts 31.
It will be noted that the angle posts 23 rest against the cylinder head 29 to support the latter. The cylinder head nuts are now removed and the jack I is backed away from the cylinder block 30 to remove the head therefrom.
The jack platform is now lowered to the position of Fig. 3. As the platform descends, the reaction of the rigid brace bars 22 will prevent the rear edge of the channel it from descending, and will lower the forward edge thereof so as to swing the channel to the position of Fig. 3, with the cylinder head in the vertical position.- This lowers the head sufiiciently to allow the jack to be wheeled from beneath the sides 33 of the bus body. It will be noted that in the lowered position the weight of the head 29 and its attachments is supported by th two attachment arms 24.
When it is desired to replace the head, the
process is simply reversed, and as the platform 12 rises, the head will turn from the vertical to the horizontal position so that it may be easily and accurately returned to the cylinder block 39.
Certain types of bus bodies have been encountered in which the sides 38 are so low that the platform !2 cannot be elevated to the full height of Fig. 4. To adapt the attachment for this type of bus body, freely swinging hook members 39 are provided, suspended from attachment ears 40 on the channel [8. Two hole 4! are drilled in the jack below the hook members 39 to receive the lower hooked extremities thereof. When using the hook members, the brace bars 22 are disconnected from their shaft studs 35. The hook members replace the brace bars and function similarly to the latter. It will be noted, however, that since the hook members are much shorter than the brace rods, the channel [8 will tilt much more rapidly as it is lowered to the position of Fig. 3.
While a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is to be understood that the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired secured by Letters Patent is:
1. An attachment for handling an automotive cylinder head of the bus type from a floor jack having an elevating platform, comprising: a base plate adapted to be attached to said platform; a hinge extending transversally of the upper face of said base plate; a head-engaging member hinged at its one side to said hinge and extending laterally outward beyond both sides of said base plate; means for attaching said engaging member to a cylinder head; brace bars hingedly secured to the other side of said engaging member distant from said hinge; means for attaching the free extremities of said brace bars to said jack so that they will exert a rotative movement on said engaging member as the latter moves vertically with said platform; attachment arms attached to said engaging member; and means for attaching said attachment arms to said cylinder head.
2. An attachment for handling an automotive cylinder head of the bus type from a floor jack having an elevating platform, comprising: a
base plate adapted to be attached to said platform; a hinge extending transversally of the upper face of said base plate; a head-engaging member hinged at its one side to said hinge and extending laterally outward beyond both sides of said base plate; means for attaching said engaging member to a cylinder head; brace bars hingedly secured to the other side of said engaging'member distant from said hinge; means for attaching the free extremities of said brace bars to said jack so that they will exert a rotative movement on said engaging member as the latter moves vertically with said platform; attachment arms attached to said engaging member; means for attaching said attachment arms to said cylinder head; and posts secured to said engaging member and extending outwardly therefrom so as to be horizontal when said platform is lowered, and vertical when said platform is elevated, said posts being adapted to engage and support said cylinder head.
3. Means for handling a cylinder head having an intake and an exhaust manifold attached thereto from a floor jack having an elevating platform, comprising: a base plate secured on said platform; a hinge extending transversally of the upper face of said base plate; a channel member extending laterally across the base plate, said channel member being mounted on said hinge so that its open side will project forwardly therefrom; attachment ears projecting rearwardly from the back of said channel member adjacent the side distant from said hinge; a brace bar extending from each of said ears; and means for attaching said brace bar to said jack, said brace bars having a length sufficient to swing said channel member from a horizontal to a vertical positionas said platform is lowered from its upper to its lower position.
4. Means for handling a cylinder head having an intake and an exhaust manifold attached thereto from a floor jack having an elevating platform, comprising: a base plate secured on said platform; a hinge extending transversally of the upper face of said base plate; a channel member extending laterally across the base plate, said channel member being mounted on said hinge so that its open side will project forwardly therefrom; attachment ears projecting rearwardly from the back of said channel member adjacent the side distant from said hinge; a brace bar extending from each of said ears; means for attaching said brace bar to said jack, said brace;
bars having a length sufficient to swing said channel member from a horizontal to a vertical position as said platform is lowered from its upper to its lower position; attachment arms secured to said channel; and means on said attachment arms for attaching them to saidintake manifold, said channel being adapted to receive said exhaust manifold.
