Another object is to provide a valve housing having a novel arrangement of piston cylinder bores, valve chambers, and inlet and outlet conduits, ports and ducts.
Another object is to provide novel seal means between a pump housing wall or partition and a rotatable member extending through an opening of the wall.
Another object is to provide a pump which is durable in construction, economical to manufacture and effective in its operation.
These and other objects and features of the invention are pointed out in the following description in terms of the embodiment thereof which is shown in the accompanying drawing. It is to be understood, however, that the drawing is for the purpose of illustration only and is not designed as a deflnitionwof the limits of the inven tion, reference being had to the appended claims for this purpose.

Figure 1 is a side view, partially in elevation and partially in section, of a pump constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2is an end elevation as viewed from the right of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a detail section, taken substantially along the line 3 3 of Figurel.
:Referring to the drawing, the device comprises a housing unit I including, in this instance, an outer end portion I2 of generally cylindrical form for a motor I4, and an inner end pump housing I6 constituting the sole support for mounting the unit on an engine.
A problem, in this instance, was to provide means for pumping hot oil at moderately high speed for scavenging an engine sump under atmospheric pressure, and discharging to a reservoir, in one application, at about ten to twenty pounds per square inch, and thirty gallons per hour, at six thousand revolutions per minute.
The pump housing I6 forms a transverse plane end surface I8 having an elongated inlet channel or passage 20 closed bythe pump housing material, at its ends, and'open along one side in the plane or surface I8. The housing I6 also forms an outlet 22 normal to, and through, the plane 4 Claims. (Cl. 10S- 171) surface I8 adjacent to one end of the channel 20 and communicating with an internal conduit 24 along, or parallel to, the channel or passage 20. The housing I 6 further forms a through bore 26 along, or parallel to, the passage 2l! having an intermediate portion 28, which, in this instance, is of uniform cylindrical section, extending beyond each end of the passage 2U. The bore 26 forms cylindrical portion 2l adjacent to each end, and terminates in a poppet valve chamber 30, at each end, having a valve seat 32. i
A port 84 communicates between `each end of the channel or passage 20 and the bore portion 28. A duct 36 communicates between each end of the conduit 24 and the corresponding chamber 30.
Simple valve disc members 31, in the chambers 30 on the seats 32, are biased toward the seats by compression springs 38 between the discs and screw plug closures 40 at the outer endsl of the chambers 36.
An elongated element 42, in this instance, of simple round section solid bar character, has an axially central cut out 44, and forms, at each end, a combined valve member and piston portion 46 adapted, in this instance, to open and close the corresponding inlet port 34 at about one quarter of the piston stroke. As shown in Figure 1, the top port 34 is closed and the bottom port 34 is open.
A Scotch yoke 48, is secured to the rod 42 in the cut out 44, as by screws.
,The motor I4 includes an armature shaft 56 having an end extension 52 of reduced diameter and polygonal section.
A member 54, of cylindrical form, is provided with a socket portion 56 fitting the shaft 50, an opening 58 at the bottom of the socket 56 fitting the polygonal extension 52; a radial outer ilange 60, and an eccentric projecting end element 62. Amanti-friction bearing 64 is mounted on the eccentric element 62 and therewith constitutes a trunnion fitting the yoke 48.
A second anti-friction bearing 66 is disposed in the pump housing I6 around the socket member 56, with one side next to the flange 60.
A lock ring 68 is disposed in a groove of the socket member 56 against the inner race of the bearing 66. A ring seal Ill is disposed in a rabbet of the pump housing around the outer race of the bearing 66. n
A disc 12, at the other side of the bearing 66, is provided with a tubular portion 'I4 extending away from the bearing, with a sealing ring 'I6 of axially opening substantially channel rim section embracing the outer end of the tubular portion 'I4 in the channeL'and having one side'of the channel against the socket member 56. A member 'I8 has a tubular portion 80 telescoping, and a radially inner flange 82 axially holding, the
3 sealing ring 18, and is also provided with a radially outer flange 84 telescoping the flange 12 and secured, as by screws 86, to the pump housing I8 to press the flange 12 against the ring seal 10. A gasket 88 is contoured to the surface I8 and to the inlet and outlet 20 and 22 respectively, as well as to openings 90 in the pump housing for receiving studs in mounting the device on an engine.
In operation, when the suction stroke starts in one direction, the pressure in the corresponding cylinder 21 quickly drops to a value determined by the vapor pressure and the entrained gas, the corresponding inlet port 34 is uncovered, and the cylinder fills, after which it is emptied on the discharge stroke, through the corresponding discharge valve chamber 30.
The pump housing I6 is made as one integral cast block forming all of the connecting liquid conducting passageways by simple straight line drill and machine operations, plugged where necessary, and avoiding the employment of tubes, cored holes and exterior parts'.
The device dispenses entirely with inlet valve members and springs, has its outlet valve members 31 and its double piston 42 of the simplest possible form, with the latter performing the double duty of piston and valve member, provides a particularly simple and eifective anti-friction eccentric and Scotch yoke structure, a simple and eilective seal structure, represented by the ring 16, and other features, which severally and in combination under the device a distinct advance in its field.
Although only one embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, various changes in the form and relative arrangements of the parts, which will now appear to those skilled in the art, may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. Reference is, therefore, to be had to the appended claims for a definition of the limits of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination of a pump and motor housing unit comprising a pump housing including an engine mounting end portion forming a transverse plane end surface and having an elongated inlet channel closed at its ends and open along one side in said surface. the pump housing forming an outlet normal tc and through said plane adjacent to one end of the channel and communicating with an internal conduit along the channel, a bore along and extending beyond each end of the channel, poppet valve chambers having valve seats at the ends of the bore, a port communicating between each end of the channel and the bore, a duct communicating between each end of the internal conduit and the corresponding chamber, valve discs in the chambers, screw plugs closing the outer ends of the chambers, compression springs between the plugs and the discs, a rod in the bore having an axially central side cut out and forming a combined valve member and piston at each end adapted to open the corresponding inlet port at substantially one quarter of the xpiston stroke, a Scotch yoke secur'ed to the rod in the cut out, a motor including a shaft having an end extension of polygonal section, a member having a socket telescopically fitting the shaft and an opening at the bottom of the socket fitting the extension, the socket member having a radial outer flange and an eccentric projecting end element, an anti-friction bearing on said elei ment and therewith constituting a trunnion iitting the yoke, and a bearing in the pump housing around the socket member having one side next to the flange.
2. The combination of a pump housing including a mounting end having an inlet passage extending across said end, an outlet conduit beside the passage, a bore along and extending beyond each end of the passage, poppet valve chambers at the ends of the bore having valve seats, a port communicating between each lend of said passage and said bore, a duct communicating between each end of said conduit and the corresponding chamber, valve members in said chambers, outer end closures for said chambers, springs between said end closures and valve members biasing the valve members toward the seats, a rod in said bore forming at each end a combined valve member for the corresponding inlet duct and a piston, a Scotch yoke secured to said rod, a motor including a shaft, a member rotatable with said shaft having a radially outer ange and an eccentric axially extending end trunnion, an anti-friction bearing on said trunnion iitting said yoke, a bearing around said rotatable member having one side next to said ange, and a member around said rotatable member secured to the pump housing therein at the other side of said second bearing.
3. The combination of a pump housing ine1uding a plane end surface, a, closed-end inlet channel'across the surface having a side open in the plane' of the surface, an outlet conduit beside the channel beneath the surface, a bore beneath the surface beside and extending beyond each end of the channel, poppet valve chambers at .the ends ofthe bore, a port adjacent to each end of the channel providing communication between the channel and the bore, a duct adjacent to each end of said conduit providing communication bctween the conduit and the corresponding chamber, an elongated element in the bore forming a valve member for the corresponding inlet port and a piston at each end and having a. Scotch yoke or the like intermediate said pistons, and a rotatable piston driving member carrying an eccentric end extension tting said yoke.
4. The combination of a housing having a plane outer surface andI forming an elongated channel closed at its ends and open along one side in said surface, a through bore beneath said surface extending along and forming a valve chamber beyond each end of said channel and a piston cylinder next to each chamber, a compartment intermediate said cylinders, an inlet port communicating between each cylinder and a side of the corresponding end of the channel, and an outlet duct for each chamber.
