Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER BROTHERS, JR., OF HARTLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN H. FRENCH, OF HARTFORD, VERMONT.
LUBRICATING-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,493, dated December 6, 1881.
Application filed October 17, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OLIVER BROTHERS, J r., acitizen of the United States, residing at Hartland, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricating-Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my invention, and Fig.2 a sectional view of the same.
The present invention has relation to that class of wrenches provided with an oiler or Inbricating device; and it consists in the details of construction, substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described.
In the accompanyingdrawings, A represents the handle of the wrench, cast with a square opening longitudinally through it for the reception of a similarly-formed shank, B. The shank is cast with a jaw, a, to correspond in form to the stationaryjaw b of the handle A, so that when the twojaws are broughttogether they will embrace the nut upon its four sides.
The shank B terminates in a screw-threaded rod, 0, adapted to engage with screw-threads upon the interior of a sleeve, 0, said sleeve having wings d for convenience in turning it.
The handle A, at its outer end, is not only cast with thejaw b, but is also cast with an oil-reservoir, D, the upper surface being flat, so as to form a support or guide for the movable jaw a.
Into the end of the reservoir D is screwed a nozzle, 0, the upper end forming a seat for a suitable valve, f, rigidly connected to a vertical rod, g, the valve being held down upon its 40 seat by a coiled spring, h, the lower end hearing upon the upper face of the valve, while the upper end of the spring is disposed within a seat, 5, cast in the base of the reservoir.
Although I have shown an oiling device which I consider best adapted to the purpose,
I do not desire to be understood as confining myself to the precise construction shown, as any of the well-known oiling devices may be substituted, so long as they are found applicable to the purpose, in connection with the wrench.
The movable jaw a,when extended sufficientl y to admit of both jaws being placed around the nut, is drawn towardjaw b by turning in the proper direction the screw-sleeve (3, thus tightly clamping the nut between them and enabling it to be unscrewed. After the nut has been removed the oiler may be used, and while oiling the wagon or piece of machinery there is no danger of losing the nut, as it is securely held by thejaws of the wrench.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a wrench, the arm A, having jaw I), and provided with a suitable oiler or lubricating device, in combination with the movablejaw a, shank B, screw-rod o, and screw-sleeve G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
OLIVER BROTHERS, J R.
