UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MOISTENIN G BRUSH AND HOLDER August 0. Hummel, Cincinnati, Ohio Application October 25, 1945, Serial No. 624,368
6 Claims.
My invention relates to the provision of a piece of office equipment which provides a well for containing water, a brush which is moistened by the water, and a guide plate and support for labels or the like which are to be moistened.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide for a support and guide for labels to be moistened which can be swung up and down as if hinged, but can be lifted entirely away from the casing that forms the water container, thus making the interior of the casing available for cleaning out or filling.
Another object of my invention is to use the support and guide as a cover for the casing in storage, and during shipment and use. Another object is to provide by means of the structure of the casing for a means of supporting the moistening brush in two positions. In one of these, the support and guide will rest on the top of the brush at the elevated portion thereof under which a label is to be slipped for moistening it. In the other of these positions the cover lies against the side of the brush leaving its upper edge exposed for moistening the fingers or applying the gummed edge of some article which is not of the size to slip under the elevated portion or mension. N0 parts are held together so that all can be cleaned separately, yet in use the parts behave as if they were really held together in an effective unit.
I have illustrated in the drawings an example of my invention in its preferred form and will describe it in detail and here make reference to the appended claims for the novelty inherent in the structure.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a like section showing the brush, which is in storage in Figure 2 in position for moistening labels, with the cover plate properly placed for this operation.
Figure 4 is still another like section showing the brush in position for general moistening with the cover plate in the position required upon this adjustment of the brush.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the cover plate.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the brush.
The casing of the device, as already suggested, is preferably a single casting having a hollow rectangular body I with a cross partition 2 therein, said partition having a slot 3 therein which permits water in the casing to communicate freely between the two parts of the casing divided by the partition. The casing side walls are formed with internal ribs 4, 5, 6 and I in this instance four in number, two located on each side of the partition and terminating at the upper end below the upper edges of the side walls, the forward two ribs on opposite side walls being somewhat longer than the other two ribs. Since the cover plate rests on these ribs and the casing is slanted upwardly toward the one end, the cover plate will lie generally parallel with the tops of the casing walls.
The cover plate 8 is flanged on its sides at 9, the flanges being arranged to fit into the top of the casing and rest on the tops of the four ribs, as above noted. In the illustrated form the flanges are formed by angle iron pieces riveted or screwed to the main cover. 7 integral instead. The pieces 9 extend beyond the main body of the plate which is the label support and serve to mount on their top surfaces the guide plate portion It of the cover. The result.
of this construction is that the guide plate is..- elevated above the label supporting plate portion of the cover and labels laid on the main or sup port plate portion can be slid under the guide plate portion. A label H is shown as being so manipulated in Figure 3. The level-of the guide plate portion is also higher than the end wall of the casing to permit passage of the label.
As shown by Figure 1 and Figure 2, when the brush is not in the casing or else is laid down flat on the median partition the cover rests in place within the top of the casing, enclosing it.
There are two ribs l2, l2 on the rear wall of the casing which project inwardly and serve along with the central partition to support the brush in a generally horizontal position as shown in Figure 2. The brush l3 (Figure 6) may be of any desired construction, its important feature being its dimensions. It is preferably backed with a metal plate l3a to give it stiffness in its several positions in the device.
When it is desired to use the brush for labels (Figure 3) the cover plate is tilted upwardly, which can be done without lifting it away, since it will pivot on the two rearward supporting ribs 4 and 1, and the brush is arranged in the easing so as to rest on the cross partition 2 and abut They may be with its inner edge the two ribs l2. The cover plate is then lowered, whereupon the proportions are such that, as already noted, the higher level guide plate will rest on the top of the brush. A
the casing, The water is indicated at M in Figures 3'arid f. g Y When "thede'vie is to be used for general moistening, the cover is again moved up hingedly as before, and the brush lifted and put into posi-" tion abutting the partition at its; inner: end and= resting on the forward wall of the casing at its upper end.
