SHARPENING DEVICE FOR CLIPPER BLADES Filed Nov. 21, 1947 E|-\M. Clark.
. W /W M Patented Apr. 11, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SHARPENIN G DEVICE FOR CLIPPER BLADES S. W. Clark, Yuma, Ariz.
Application November 21, 1947, Serial No. 787,452
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to a sharpening device for clipper blades and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
It is an object of the invention to provide a device for sharpening blades of the hair clipper type which will be extremely simple and economical in construction and yet very efiicient and effective in its use.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character set forth from which the power utilized to move the clipper blades may be employed to sharpen the blades.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which will be light in weight and which needs no adjustment for its successful operation.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view thereof,
Figure 3 is a front elevational view showing the device as it appears while sharpenng the top blade of a clipper,
Figure 4 is a side elevational view thereof,
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along line 5-5 of Figure 1, and
Figure 6 is a front elevational view showing the device as it appears while sharpening the bottom blade of a clipper.
Generally, there is provided a sharpening device consisting of a relatively thin rectangular shaped sharpening stone having a shoulder formed adjacent one end and having a screw embedded at a point adjacent the other end. A detent is slidably and adjustably mounted upon the screw and is adapted to one blade or the other of a clipper between itself and the shoulder. Operation of the clipper in the usual manner will reciprocate the remaining blade upon the opposite side the stone. When one blade has been sharpened the clipper is removed and replaced with the sharpened blade now in locked position.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a sharpening device comprising a substantially rectangular stone I0 having a shoulder II integrally formed adjacent one end thereof and having a screw I2 mounted 2 adjacent the other end thereof. The screw is adapted to adjustably hold a detent I3.
In operation, the stone I0 is placed upon the upper blade I4 and lower blade I5 to a clipper I6. When it is desired to sharpen the top blade, the stone is placed with the shoulder II and the detent I3 in a downward position as viewed in Figure 3. The lower blade I5 is clamped between the shoulder II and the detent I3 and locked in position by means of the screw I2. The clipper is then activated in the usual manner, whether by hand or by motor, and the upper blade I4 will be reciprocated against the stone Ill whereby to sharpen the same.
By removing the stone and replacing the same between the blades I4 and I5 with the shoulder II and the detent I3 in an upward position and then looking the blade I4 therebetween in the manner above set forth with regard to the lower blade l5, the lower blade is now permitted to reciprocate in frictional contact with the stone l0 whereby to sharpen it.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A device of the character described comprising a sharpening stone adapted to be placed between the blades of a clipper and means for locking the blade to said stone, said means comprising a shoulder formed at one end of the stone, an abutment slidably mounted at the other end of the stone upon that side thereof having the shoulder and having a slot therein, and a screw extending through the slot and threadably engaged in the stone, whereby blades of varying widths may be locked between said shoulder and said abutment.
