1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in interlocking socket and box end type wrenches and inserts therefor.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of nested and interlocking nut engaging inserts for socket and box end type wrenches.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of nested and interlocking nut engaging inserts for socket and box end type wrenches which will be similarly formed with the exception that-the inserts for the socket type wrenches are closed at one end and formed with square apertures therethrough for receiving and positioning the square shank of the handle operating member.
A further object of the invention is to provide a plurality of concentrically disposed nested nut engaging inserts for socket and box end type wrenches which will interlock with each other and with said wrenches.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of nested and interlocking nut engaging inserts for socket and box end type wrenches which will be highly eificient in operation, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying'drawings, which form a part of this application, I
Figure l is a plan View of a socket wrench;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through a socket wrench with nested nut engaging inserts therein;
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view looking into the open or bottom end of a socket wrench with the inserts removed;
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the largest nut engaging insert adapted to be received in said socket wrench;
Figure 5 is a bottom plan View of the middlesize nut engaging insert adapted to be received within said larger nut engaging insert;
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the middle-size nut engaging insert;
Figure 7 is a bottom plan'view of the smallestsize nut engaging insert adapted to be received within said middle-size nut engaging insert;
Figure 8 is a sectional view taken on the line 8-8 of Figure 5; a
Figure 9 is a plan View of a double ended box and wrench with nut engaging inserts removed; and
Figure 10 is a sectional view through one end.
of the box and wrench.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a socket type wrench having a cylindrical body I, the same being closed by the thickened wall, 2 at its upper end, and formed with the square aperture 3 to receive the largest square shank 4 on the end of the handle operator 5. A series of stepped square shanks 6, l and 8 will be formed integrally with the square shank 4 and will be arranged in axial alignment therewith. As seen from Figure 2 of the drawings, the handle operator 5 will be disposed at right angles to the said stepped shanks.
The inner annular surface of the wrench body I is formed with a series of alternate vertically arranged V-shaped recesses 9 and inwardly extending ribs H]; while vertical locking slots II are formed in alternate ribs l 0.
A series of nut engaging inserts l2, l3 and M are provided and each comprises a vertical wall made with alternate inwardly and outwardly extending ribs l5 and I6, which will be interlocked with the-recesses 9 and ribs l0 formed in the wrench body I. Alternately arranged vertical interlocking ribs I1 and slots F8 are formed on the outside and inside surfaces of the inserts, whereby the inserts will interlock with the adjacent inserts. The smallest insert i l will be provided only with the ribs H, the slots is being omitted for obvious reasons.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that each insert will be adapted to be used with varying sizes of nuts, either square or hexagonal in shape. Furthermore, each insert 8, 9 and ill will be closed at its upper end and will be formed with the square apertures or sockets I9, 20 and 2! respectively, in which the square shanks 6, I and 8 will be received.
The inserts which are not to be used, as for example when the largest insert only is to be used, may be knocked out with little or no efiort.
In Figures 9 and 10, a double box end type wrench is shown having a centrally disposed hantile 22 and the box ends 23 and 24 formed on the opp site ends thereof. Similar inner surface construction for the box ends will be provided as shown for the socket wrench I and similar nesting and interlocking inserts will be used except that the inserts will be cylindrical and open a both ends.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant 3 invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pattent of the United States is:
A wrench tool comprising a series of nested interlocking socket members each provided with an axial non-circular opening, which openings are of decreasing diameters, irregular interlocking ribs and grooves formed respectively on the inner and outer surfaces of the socket members and a handle actuator provided with a projecting end portion having a series of stepped axially aligned non-circular shank portions formed thereon, which shank portions are adapted to be inserted respectively in the complementary aligned openings of the socket members.
