This invention is directed to, and it is an object to provide, a brush-painters folding pocket hook.

Another object of the invention is to provide a folding hook, as above, which is small, compact, and light weight so that when folded it can be carried in a painters pocket or kit with convenience.

A further object of the invention is to provide a folding hook which, when unfolded, provides an elTective means for the suspension of a paint can, by its bail, from a ladder rung, scaffold, or the like.

A further object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical, and convenient brushpainters folding pocket hook, and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purpose for which it is designed.

These objects are accomplished by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.

In the drawings:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device unfolded for use.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device partly folded.

Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device fully folded.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the device is first described by reference to Fig. 1, wherein said device is in its unfolded position for use.

The device comprises an upper hook, indicated generally at I, which upper hook is of downwardly opening, horse-shoe type; and a lower hook, indicated generally at 2, which lower hook is elongated, relatively narrow, and opens upwardly.

The upper hook I is adapted for engagement over a ladder rung or the like, while the lower hook 2 is adapted to receive the ball of a suspended paint can.

The upper hook I comprises a fiat arcuate outer section 3, and a fiat arcuate inner section 4 pivoted together at their lapping upper ends by a transverse pivot pin 5. Opening movement of the sections 3 and 4 of the upper hook I is limited by cooperating stops 6, but which stops do not prevent the section 3 from swinging toward the section 4.

The lower hook 2 includes a fiat, substantially straight dependent leg I and a fiat upstanding leg 8 disposed laterally out with respect to the leg I in a direction opposite the upper hook I.

Additionally, the flat upstanding leg 8 is disposed in a plane at right angles to the flat depending leg 'I, this being accomplished by making the integral turn 9 at the lower ends of the legs I and 8 in the form of a half twist.

The adjacent ends of the fiat inner section 4 of the upper hook I, and the flat depending leg I of the lower hook 2 are secured together by a transverse pivot pin II] for swinging of the upper hook I downwardly into generally lapping relation to the lower hook 2, for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. Cooperating stops II on adjacent ends of the section 4 and legs I laterally of the pivot pin I0 prevent the upper hook I from passing dead-center to the right in Fig. 1, but do not limit downward swinging of the hook in the opposite direction to generally lap the lower hook 2.

The lower end of the outer section 3 is outturned, as at I2, as is the upper end I3 of the upstanding leg 8.

Intermediate its ends said upstanding leg 8 is formed with a longitudinal slot I4.

As hereinbefore explained, the unfolded and operative position of the device is as illustrated in Fig. 1.

To fold the device for carrying in compact form in the pocket, the hook I is swung downward (see Fig. 2), about pivot pin III as an axis, toward a position of general lapping with respect to the lower hook 2, and at which time the outer section 3 of said hook I projects through the longitudinal slot I4.

When the transverse pivot pin 5, which has a minimum of end projection, rests over the dependent leg 1, the fiat section 3 has projected mainly through the longitudinal slot I4 and is then swung laterally inwardly into engagement with the upstanding leg 8, as in Fig. 3; this swinging being accomplished about the axis of said pivot pin 5.

As so folded the device is extremely compact and convenient to carry in the pocket.

From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that there has been produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention, as set forth herein.

While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.

Having thus described the inventlon, the 01- lowing is claimed as new and useful, and upon which Letters Patent are desired:

1. A folding hook comprising, in unfolded or operative position, an upper downwardly opening hook, a lower upwardly opening hook, and means pivoting adjacent ends of said hooks together for folding to a generally lapping position; the upper hook including inner and outer sections pivoted together for relative approaching motio from open position of said upper hook.

2. A folding "hook, comprising, in unfolded or operative position, an upper downwardly opening hook, a lower upwardly opening hook, the upper hook having an inner section and the lower hook including a dependent leg, and means pivoting adjacent ends of said section and leg together for relative folding of the hooks into generally lapping position.

3. A folding hook comprising in unfolded operative position, a first hook, such first hook including inner and outer sections pivoted together for relative approaching motion from open position, a second hook, said second hook comprising a relatively fiat leg pivoted to the free end of one section of the first hook and extending longitudinally with respect thereto, the sections of the first hook and said leg being positioned to lap each other upon folding of the same together, said second hook also including a relatively flat leg disposed laterally out from and substantially parallel with the first leg and disposed in a, plane substantially at right angles to the fiat plane of the first leg, said second leg being provided with a longitudinal slot in its flat face, the free section of the first hook .being engageable through said slot whent-hefirst hook is moved to substantially lapping position with respect to the first named leg of the second hook.
