This invention relates to a slide action attachment forshot'guns and rifies.
An object of the invention is to provide efficient and novel means'ior actuating the sliding bolt of a gun, such as a rifle, shotgun, etc.
Another object of the invention is the production of a bolt action device which can be applied to a gun at the time ofmanuiacturing the gun, or can be applied at anytime after the gun'ha's been manufactured.
A still further object of the invention is the construction. of an apparatus which is easily operated and which willbe (positive in action for producing best results. 1
With the foregoing and other objects in view, I
this invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrang'ementsof parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the attachment or apparatus as it appears when the gun is in a closed or firing condition, while Figure 2 is a View in side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a top plan view showing the gun and the attachment in an open position, while Figure 4 is a View in side elevation of the same.
Figure 5 is an enlarged, sectional view, taken on line 55, Figure 2.
Figure 6 is an enlarged, sectional view, taken on line 6-6, Figure 4.
Figure '7 is a sectional view, taken on line i-1, Figure 2.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary view of the gun, showing in elevation another embodiment of the grip.
Figure 9 is a sectional view, taken on line 9-9, Figure 8.
Referring to the drawings, in Figures 1 to 7, the preferred embodiment is illustrated. The gun is of the usual type, comprising a stock I and a gun barrel 2. The gun is provided with a sliding bolt 3, to which is fixedly secured a laterally extending lever 4. On the outerend of lever 4 is an integral ball 5.
The attachment or apparatus for actuating the sliding bolt 3 comprises a slotted track 6, which is shown in the drawings as being secured to one side of the stock. However, the attachment may be secured in different positions upon the stock without departing from the spirit of the invention. The slotted track is shown in Figure 7 as having two flanges I. Slidably mounted within sl'ottedtrackfiisa:slide 8, whi'c'hzi's Tesha pjedin cross s'e'ction.
A grip 9is.of substantial-1y U-shape, with its upper ends .1 ill secured .to the outer faceoi :the slide 8 by means of screws H. The grip 9 extends under the stock' 'i '(Fig. "7) andcan be.-e asily grasped by the hunter or operator.
A cylinder I2 is providediat its innerendzwith an in'tegra'l plate 'l-3, Fig. 5,.-and=this plate is pivotally mountedv on one of 'thetscrews I l, whereby the slide28'and cylinder l2'move together. Within the cylinder 1 2 are 'twoyspaced guide lugs [4.
Each: gu'ideil-ug M is-detachab1y"held in 1 place-by ascrew l 5,'- Fig. 6. Slidably mounted between lugs 1 4 is theinnerportion of twisted bar 1,6, which has 'arotatablemovement with respect to said eyl'ir-ider 12 I to permit said: bar sl -6 to swing or r'otate owing to the positioning of said lever 4. 0n the inner end of bar it, within cylinder I2, is fixedly secured a hinge Il On the outer end of the twisted bar I6 is a suitable clamp l8, within which is securely held the ball 5 that is fixedly secured upon lever 4.
In operation, when it is desired to retract or slide bolt 3 outwardly, the operator grps with one hand grip 9 and pulls rearwardly thereon, which results in opening the gun. When it is desired to close the gun, that is, force the sliding bolt 3 inwardly, the operator pushes outwardly upon the grip 9, which causes the bolt 3 to have a slight side or rotary movement, resulting in the twisted bar It slightly sliding between the guide lugs M, as the entire attachment assumes the position as shown in Figures 1 and 2; that is to say, the closed position of the attachment is practically down on one side of the gun stock, as shown. This downward movement from the open position is automatic. Therefore, it is to be understood that as the operator draws rearwardly upon grip 9, the action causes the attachment to take the position shown in Figure 4. Consequently, the peculiar construction of the cylinder I2 and the twisted bar I6, with their cooperating parts, is necessary for the production of this efiicient slide action attachment.
The slide 8 is provided in its top and bottom edges with ball bearings, as shown in dotted lines in Figures 5 and 7, whereby the slide 8 easily operates.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 8 and 9, the grip 9 is in the shape of a flat plate, with an elongated opening 9 therein, through Which opening the operator extends part of his hand for gripping the grip 9 In Figure 9, the grip 9 is shown bent outwardly, if the constructor so desires. In this embodiment all of the parts are common to the preferred structure, except said grip 9*.
While I have described the preferred embodiments of my invention and illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates during the extensive manufacture of the same, and I, therefore, reserve the right to make such changes or alterations as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a slide action attachment for guns, the combination of a slotted track provided with two flanges, a slide T-shaped in cross section, mounted in said slotted track and :a portion of said slide extending beyond said flanges, a grip secured to the extended portion of said slide, a cylinder pro- 'vided with a fixed plate, means pivotally connecting said plate against a portion of said grip, said cylinder provided near one end with a pair of detachable guide lugs, a twisted bar having a portion positioned between said guide'lugs, said twisted bar provided with a head on its inner end within said cylinder, and a clamp secured to the outer end of said twisted bar.
2. In a slide action attachment for bolt action guns having a bolt rotating lever, a guide plate fixed to one side of the gun, a manually reciprocable slide carried by said guide, a member having its forward end pivoted on a horizontal axis to said slide, a bar extending rearwardly from said member, said bar being twisted to form a steeply pitched screw, a nut carried b said member and fitting the screw of the bar, and a link connecting the rear end of the bar with the bolt rotating lever.
3. In a slide action attachment for bolt action guns having a bolt rotating lever, a, guide plate fixed to one side of the gun, a manually reciprocable slide carried by said guide, a member having its forward end pivoted on a horizontal axis to said slide, a bar extending rearwardly from said member, said bar being twisted to form a steeply pitched screw, a nut carried by said member and fitting the screw of the bar, a stop on said bar at its forward extremity, said stop limiting relative forward movement of said member on said bar, and a link connecting the rear end of the bar with the bolt rotating lever.
4. The slide action of claim 2 characterized by the member pivoted to the slide being of cylindrical form for guiding and housing the bar.
5. The slide action of claim 3 characterized by the member pivoted to the slide being of cylindrical form for guiding and housing the bar.
