The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of a handle construction for holder for sand paper and the like which is constructed and arranged to prevent slipping of the fingers from off the handle portion of the holder and for closing the ends of said handle portion.

A sand paper holder of the type to which the invention relates includes an upper metal plate which is formed to have a tubular handle portion intermediate opposite side edges thereof. There are depending portions at opposite side edges of the plate for pressing the edges of a sand paper sheet against portions of a lower plate. The handle portion provides relatively yieldability of the plate so that the depending portions may move towards and away from one another and as the handle yields its diameter increases and decreases.

In manipulating the holder the fingers are likely to slip off the ends of the handle portion and is prevented by the means of this invention.

Because the handle portion is expanded and contracted it is difiicult if not impossible to secure means in the opposite ends of the handle.-

Or at least means secured therein tend to prevent the expansion and contraction of the handle.

According to this invention means is provided which extends through the handle and permits the desired and necessary contraction and expansion of the handle and functions for the purpose intended.

With the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the r combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

Fig. 1 is a plan view of a sand paper holder embodying the novel features of the invention and Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the sand paper holder shown in Fig. 1.

Referring now to the drawings more in detail, the invention will be fully described.

A sand paper holder is shown which is of the construction shown in United States Letters Patent No. 2,033,134 of March 10, 1936 to C, J. Fancher.

A cam 12 as in the patent referred to is oscillable on pins 14 depending from the clamp member. Cam slots in which said pins are disposed are. arranged whereby the sides of the clamp are moved towards or away from one another accordingly as the member I2 is moved in one direction or the other.

A manually engageable member 15 extends from the member I: for actuating it.

A sheet of abrasive material l'8 has its marginal edges 20 extending between the flanges 4 and I0. When the opposite sides of the member 6 are moved towards one another by means of the cam member l2 the edge portions of the sheet are engaged between said flanges. When the sides of said member are moved apart the flanges release the edges of the sand paper.

Movement of the side portions of the member 6 towards and away from one another causes the handle portion 8 to contract and expand in diameter.

The handle means of the invention includes a barrel 24 which extends into the handle and has a head '26 on one end thereof for disposition at one end of the handle.

A head member 28 has a shank 30 Which is receivable in a bore 32 of the barrel 24.

The shank is secured in the bore by adhesive of a type suitable for the material from which the parts are made. Such material may be wood, plastic or the like.

The heads 26 and 28 may be colored if desired and. in all cases will be larger in diameter than the diameter of the handle, as shown so as to function for the purpose intended.

The heads prevent displacement of the barrel from the handle while the handle may contract and expand as it does when the sand paper is clamped and released.

The heads at opposite ends of the handle may be secured to the barrel after the manner of the head 28 if desired.

The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being mediate elongated tubular expansible and con tractable handle portion of a certain diameter with handle means comprising, an elongated barrel member in said handle portion having a head portion at one end thereof of relatively larger diameter than that of said handle portion closing and abutting one end thereof, an opposite end of said barrel member terminating at the other end of said handle portions and provided with an "axial bore' extending inwardly from said opposite end, and a head member having a shank extending into and secured in said bore and provided with a, head portion of relatively larger diameter than that of said handle portion closing and abutting an opposite end thereof, all adapted and arranged whereby said barrel member is restrained against axial movement relative to said handle portion by said heads in abutment with opposite ends thereof and said head portions tend to prevent endwise slipping of the handle through the fingers of the hand when grasped thereby.
