. This invention relates to an improved apparatus for removing a protective cover sheet from the opening in a card and for mounting a microfihn and the like in the opening in the card.
The improved apparatus of the invention is intended particularly for the mounting of microfilms and the like in openings in record cards having thin adhesive sheets, secured to the cards and extending into the openings, to which the microfilm is secured. The improved apparatus also has provision for removing from the opening, prior to the insertion of the microfilm, etc. therein, of a protective cover sheet. The invention includes improvements in the film mounter, as well as in the cover sheet stripper, which are advantageously combined as a part of the san le apparatus.
The improved apparatus is intended for use in card record systems and with cards such as described in prior applications Serial Nos. 592,981 and 609,424, the latter having been abandoned. In such systems the cards are advantageously prepared with one or more openings therein, in which the microfilm, etc. is to be inserted, and with a thin sheet of transparent adhesive paper secured to the card around the opening and extending into the opening so that the microfilm may be secured to the adhesive when inserted in the opening. As described in said prior applications, the thin adhesive sheet which extends into the opening is advantageously protected by a removable cover sheet, such as a sheet of glassine paper, until the card is ready for the insertion of the microfilm, etc. therein.
Such cards can be prepared by cutting or punching openings therein, of appropriate size for the film to be inserted therein, by applying a thin, transparent sheet of adhesive paper to cover the opening and to extend over the adjacent marginal edges of the card, then cutting out the central portion of the adhesive paper to leave a marginal edge extending into the opening, and applying the protective cover sheet of e. g., glassine paper, to the marginal adhesive paper in the opening.
Such film record cards can be prepared in large number as articles of commerce and supplied to the user. They can be processed through well known perforating, printing and verifying machines to produce thereon and therein the indicia for identifying and classifying and film or other insert to be mounted therein Cards so prepared are ready for mounting the microfllms, etc. therein but require removal of the protective cover sheet prior to such mounting.
The improved apparatus of the present invention enables the protective cover sheet to be removed, and enables a section of a film to be cut out and centered and applied in the opening. This improved apparatus has provision for inserting the card therein and holding it in position and for strippingthe protective sheet from the adhesive in the opening. The improved apparatus also has provision for supplying film thereto, projecting the film tocenter it or insure that the correct portion of the film will be selected, and for cutting out a predetermined section or the film and inserting it in the opening and against the adhesive to form the finished card.
The apparatus is a relatively small portable hand-operated machine for mounting sections of photographic film in apertures of record cards of the types described. The apparatus includes improvements in cooperating elements for removing a protective cover sheet and also for centering, cutting and appyling the film so that it will be secured to the adhesive in the opening in the card. The invention includes various combinations'and 'subcombinations of elements for accurately centering the film, and for cutting it and inserting it in the opening in the card.
The nature and advantages of the invention and its various combinations and subcombinations of elements, will be further described in connection with the accompanying drawings but it will be understood that the invention is illus trated thereby but not limited thereto.

One suitable form of record card, shown for purposes of illustration, is indicated at I inrig. 2,
this card having an opening therein and aprotective and removable cover sheet 3 in the opening and with a thin adhesive sheet 2 surrounding the opening and overlapping the card around the opening and extending into the opening. The adhesive sheet 2 is on the back of the card as shown in Fig. 2. This generally rectangular frame of adhesive material may be a thin sheet of cellulose acetate or other transparent material coated on one side with a slow acting inert adhesive such as the adhesive paper marketed under the names of Duraseal or Permasea1" and may have a thickness of around 0.001 inch or 0.0015 inch. In certain of the figures of the drawing this sheet of adhesive is somewhat exaggerated in thickness for purposes of illustration. The sheet is so thin that it does not interfere with the use of the card when secured thereto but it is advantageously located in a compressed or recessed portion 2-a of the cards as shown in Fig. 14 so that it does not.
project beyond the surface of the card. This sheet of transparent adhesive material remains transparent and flexible and holds the film firmly in place when the film is inserted in the opening. The protective cover sheet, e. g., of glassine, is not firmly held by the adhesive and is readily removed therefrom, although held sufliciently to permit the card to be punched and classified in standard punching and classifying machines without danger of accidental removal.
In order to use such cards, with an adhesive frame around the opening, the protective glassine cover sheet must be removed and the film inserted therein.
The apparatus for processing such cards and for stripping the cover sheet and inserting the films includes a base plate 4 with an integral wedge shaped block 5, and the various parts of the apparatus are mounted and supported from this base plate and wedge shaped block. Upwardly extending brackets I support the screen housing 3 having a translucent screen 9 on which the film to be mounted is projected. Three brackets 3 mounted on the wedge shaped block 5 are secured to the bottom plate 23 of the plate assembly and support this plate assembly. Brackets II and ll-a secured to the back of the plate 23 support the stripping elements and an extension I 3 of one of these brackets supports the film reel it holding the film H from which sections are to be cut and inserted in the cards.
A lamp housing I2 is supported on the block I and secured to the base plate 4 by a bracket "-0. This -lamp housing includes a lamp i3 with a re- 4 fiector l3 and lens unit l3" located and-arranged to project light through the film and onto the screen 3.
Also mounted on the block I are brackets II and II' andmounted thereinis ashaft I. carrying the roll I3 for supporting the 'film. Also mounted in the brackets is a shaft 22 to which thehandle 2| andthearm2l' areconnected,and between the handle and arm is another shatt l3 carrying the roll I! and having the operating knob or handle 23 thereon for turning the shaft 13 and theroll l1. Thisroll l|,asshownin1"ig.3. is cut away at the central portion so that only its outer ends come in contact with the film. A spring 22' serves to press the roll l1 yieldably against the roll ll; while by operating the handle 2| the roll H can be moved away from the roll it to permit insertion of the film therebetween or to permit movement of the film by hand. By operation of the knob 23 by hand while the roll I! is pressed against the film, the film can be moved forward as desired.
The plate assembly includes the base plate 23 secured to and supported by the bracket 13 and having raised rims 24 and 24' at its edges secured to the plate by screws. And above these rims 24 and secured thereto are two plates 34 and 31, held by screws 35 and 36. The raised rims 24 and 24' space the plates 34 and 31 away from the base plate 23 and leave a space therebetween. Movably' mounted on the base plate 23 is a movable plate 30 and a slide bar 25. The slide bar 23 is located adjacent the rim 24' and has L-shaped end projections 20 and 23' and an operating knob 23. The main portion of this bar 23 slides in a groove 21 in the plate 23 and a groove 21--a in the upper plates 34 and 31. The end projection 23' of the bar 25 also is adapted to slide under a portion of the plate 31 in the opening 21-4: shown in Fig. 6.
The movable plate 33 is located between the bottom plate 23 and the upper plates 33 and 31. The plate 30 has a thicker portion 3! at its upper edge adapted to slide in a groove 23 in the bottom plate 23 and in a corresponding groove 23-a in the upper plates 34 and 31. At its ends the plate 33 has L-shaped portions 32 and 32' raised above the main portion of the plate. The L-shaped portion 32' is adapted to slide under a part of the plate 31 in the groove 23a, indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 7 and 8.
The bottom plate 23 is cut away at one end as indicated at 33 in Figs. 7 and 8 to facilitate insertion and removal of the cards. The plate 33 is also cut away for a considerable portion of its width at one end to form the end 43 (Figs. 7 and 8), and is cut away at its other end to form a corner end section 38. Secured to the bottom plate 23 at one end is a pin 33 for limiting the movement of the plate 30 and at the other end of the plate 23 is a similar pin 30 for limiting the movement of the plate 33 in the other direction.
The plate 34 has an opening 42 therein and the plate 23 has a correspondingly located opening 42" therein. The sliding plate 33 has a corresponding opening 42' which is in registration with the openings 42 and 42" when the sliding plate 30 is in its extreme position at the left as indicated in Figs. 7 and 11.
The plate 31 has an opening 45 therein and the base plate 23 has a correspondingly located opening IW'therein. The movable plate 33 also has an opening I 11188 ll and 43" which registers with the openwhentheslidingplate llisin its extreme left position as shown in Figs. '1 and 11.
In the use of this plate assembly a card such as shown in Fig. 2 is placed on the sliding plate 30 while this plate and the slide bar 25 are at the extreme left, as shown in Figs. '1 and 11, one end of the card being shown in broken lines at 84 and the lower righthand cut-away portion of the card being indicated in broken lines at 35. When the card is in this position it is ready for stripping the protective cover sheet from the opening, the opening in the card being in the same location as the openings, 42. 42' and 42" of the plates 34, 30 and 23. By sliding the bar 25 to the position shown in Figs 8 and 12 the card is caused to slide over the plate 33 to the position shown in Figs. 8 and 12 so that the opening in the card will be over a solid portion of the plate 30. And by continued movement of the bar 25 to the right it carries the sliding plate 30 and card thereon to the position shown in Figs. 9 and 13 where the opening in the card is brought in registration with the opening 45 in the plate 31 as shown in Fig. 13, and in this position the opening in the card is above a solid portion of the plate 30.
The cover sheet stripping mechanism, which is designed to remove the protective sheet from the opening in the card when it is in the position shown in Figs. 7 and 11 is best shown in Figs. 4, and 5-a. This mechanism includes a shaft. 50 carried by the brackets 5| and 51' and having mounted thereon an arcuate shaped finger member 54 and a cooperating member 5|, independently rotatable on the shaft 50. Also mounted on the shaft 50 is an arm 55 to which is pivotally mounted the link 51 which at its upper end is pivotally connected with two links 59 and 50, the link 59 being pivoted at its other end to the upper portion of the member 31 and the link 6|! being pivoted at its other end to the upper portion of the member 54. The normal position of the parts of this stripping mechanism is shown in Fig. 5-a and in broken lines in Fig. 5. The lower ends54' and 61' of the stripping members are spaced apart as shown in Fig. 5-a and as indicated in broken lines in Fig. 5; and the ends of these members are normally located so that the plate .30 with the card thereon can slide freely between them to bring the card into proper position for stripping the protective sheet from the opening. When the card is in this position the raising of the handle 52 to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 5 will first cause the ends 54" and BI to come together against the protective sheet in the opening at a location near one corner of the opening indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 7. Further upward movement of the handle 62 will cause the members 54 and 6 I, after they have come together and hold the cover sheet between them, to move outwardly to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 5, carrying the cover sheet 3 with them. When the handle 62 is then lowered the members 54 and BI will separate and permit the cover sheet to drop down and the stripping members will then return to the position shown in Fig. 5-41 and in dotted lines in Fig. 5.
The apparatus includes special mechanism for cutting a section of the film and for mounting it in the card after the protective sheet has been removed, or in a card having adhesive paper in the opening without any protective sheet thereon.
The plate 31, as indicated in Figs. .6 and '1, has a film carrying groove 63 extending across the top of the plate of a width somewhat wider than the width of the film and with the edges of the groove having overhanging lips 43' overlapping the edges of the film. The plate 31 also has a cutaway portion at the top indicated at 54 in Fig. 'I in which a plate 35 is secured by screws 55 as shown in Figs. 8 and 12; and this plate 65 has an opening therein corresponding to the opening 4'5 in the plate 31. This plate 65 is located above the groove 63 and even with the overhanging lip (65: so that the film can pass underneath the plate Mounted on the plate 31 is mechanism for cutting out the film when in proper registry with the opening 45. This mechanism includes a punch carrier plate 53 slidably mounted at two corners on stud pins 13, screwed into plate 31, with springs 63 surrounding the pins 10 and with an upper stop member 82 attached to pin 33 which extends through a hole in the plate 63 and limits its upper movement. The plate 63 carries a punch block 1| to which is secured the punch 14 of a size corresponding to the size of the opening 45 in the plate 31. The punch 14, block 11, and plate 68 have openings therethrough so that light projected through the film can pass through these openings and through the lens 3| mounted on the plate 68 to the translucent screen 3.
Operating mechanism is provided for operating the punch 14, including operating levers 16 with handle 18 therebetween, which levers are pivoted to the block 68 at 12 and are pivotally connected at their other ends to the upper ends of links 11 which links are pivotally mounted at their lower ends on the plate 31. The arrangement is' such that when the handle 18 and the levers 15 are lowered the punch carrying assembly will be lowered against the springs 69 and will force the punch 14 down into the opening 45 in the plate 31 and, when a film is located in proper place for cutting, will cut out the film, and then force it down into the opening in the card and onto the adhesive paper in such opening. The punch 14 serves as the male member and the opening 45 in the plate 31 serves as the female member of a die for cutting out a selected portion of the film. The plate 30 below the opening in the card supports the card when the film section is forced by the male member of the die downonto the adhesive in the card opening. After the film is cut out and mounted in the opening, the springs will force the punch assembly upwardly to the position shown in Fig. 6 after which another section of film can be introduced and centered and subsequently cut out and inserted in a similar manner.
In the operation of the apparatus described a card such as shown in Fig. 2 is placed on the movable plate 30 while this plate and the slide bar 25 are at the extreme left as shown in Figs. 7 and 11. In this position the opening in the card will register with the openings 42, 42 and 42", as indicated in Figs. '7 and 11, where one end of the card is indicated by the broken line 84 and the corner end of the card at the other end is indicated at 85. While the card is in this position the operating handle 62 of the stripping device is raised from the position shown in Fig. 5-a and in broken lines in Fig. 5 to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 5. This causes the jaws of the members 54 and GI to come together and seize the cover sheet at the point indicated in broken lines in Fig. '1 after which the cover sheet is pulled oil of the adhesive by continued movement of the mechanism so that the cover sheet will have the' position indicated at 3 in Fig. 5. On
lowering the handle 62 the cover sheet is released amiss 7 and the stripping members returned to the positionsshowninl 'imwandinbrokenlinesin rig.
Aiter the protective sheet has been thm removed the operator slides the bar 2!, by means of the knob 28, to the right and moves the card on the sliding plate II without moving the sliding plate, until the card has the position indicated in Figs. 8 and 12, after which further movement of the bar 2| movw the plate II and the card thereon to the final position shown in Figs. 9 and 13 with the opening in the card in alignment with the opening ll in the upper plate 31 and supported by a solid portion of the plate II.
Prior to the movement of the card and slide II from its stripping position shown in Figs. 7 and1l,thefilm llisthreadedthroughthegroove O8 and between the rollers i1 and I8. Light is projected through the openings 4|", 4| and ti and through the mm and the hollow die and supporting members onto the translucent screen I. Movement of the wheel II by the hand operated knob 2| permits the film to be brought into exact registration so that the portion of the film to be cut out will appear on the screen. The operator can thus observe the film and check it againstthecardinwhichitistobeinsertedto see that the identifying data on the card corresponds to the film to be inserted therein. This can be done before the card is inserted in the plate assembly for removing the protective covering sheet from the opening. When the card is then inserted and the cover strip removed and the card then moved to the position shown in Figs. 9 and 13, it is ready for the insertion of the selected film therein. In this position the operation of the punch mechanism by the handle It will cause the punch to pass downwardly and cut out the selected portion of the film and with continued downward movement of the punch member the cut-out portion of the film will be forced down into the opening and onto the adhesive, pressure being applied between the punch member It and the plate 2| which supports the card when in the position shown in Fig. 13.
In practice, the operations are simple and readily and quickly accomplished and successive sections of film can be rapidly mounted on successive cards. With the cards previously prepared and punched and printed with identifying data so that they are ready for the insertion of the film, and arranged in the same order as the film sections to be mounted, the operator can move the film to the place where projection indicates the section to be cut out for mounting on the card. The operator can observe the film and check it against the identifying data on the card, then insert the card in the plate assembly located as shown in Figs. 7 and 11, operate the stripping device by raising the arms 82 to remove the cover sheet from the opening, then push the knob 28 to the right to move the card over the plate 32 to the position shown in Figs. 8 and 12 and then with continued movement to move the plate ti and card to the final position shown in Figs. 9 and 13. whereupon operation of the punch press lever will cut out the selected portion of the film and mount it in the opening and force it against the adhesive to complete the preparation of the card. By then moving the knob 28 and slide bar 2| to the left the card will first be moved over the plate It until the L-shaped end 20' reaches the end of the cut-away portion of the plate 2| indicated at 3! in Fig. 9 after which further movement of the slide bar 2| to the left will cause the platetlandcardthereontobemovedtothe card can readily be removed. The cut-away partion 33 in the bottom plate 23 facilitates the grasping of one end of the card to remove it and to insure that the card is in proper position when first inserted.
The sliding plate II in its extreme left position showninFiga'landaabutsagainstthepintl and in its extreme right position shown in Fig. 9 abuts against the pin 8|. The slide bar 2| in its extreme right position shown in Fig. 9 forces the slide ll to its righthand position. When the slide member 25 is moved to its extreme ielt position as shown in Fig. 7 it forces the plate I. to its extreme left position. Preliminary movement 01 the slide bar 25, however, before the projection 26 engages the end portion 43 at the left, and before the L-shaped portion 25' reaches the cutaway end portion at the right, will move the card over the plate II after which continued movement of the bar 28 will move the plate 2| and the card thereon. This permits the card when fiistinsertedtobeinapcsitionwherethecover sheet can readily be stripped by the stripping mechanisms operating through the registered openings l2, l2 and 42", then permits the card to slide over the plate 3| until the opening is supported by a solid portion of the plate II in which position the opening is caused to register with the opening 25 so that the film canvbe inserted in this position.
It is one advantage of the present invention that it provides for projecting the film through hollow male and female die members so that the film can be exactly centered and located, before it is cut out and mounted in the opening in the card. It is another advantage of the invention that it permits the cutting out of the selected film and the mounting of the film in the opening in the card in a single operation. It is a further advantage of the apparatus that it enables the stripping of the cover sheet from the opening to be rapidly accomplished and the selected film then mounted in the opening in a simple and rapid manner.
While the projecting, film feeding, cutting and mounting mechanism is advantageously used in combination with the stripping mechanism for stripping the protective sheet from the opening in the card, it is adapted for use with cards which do not contain any such cover sheet or from which the cover sheet has been otherwise removed. Thus, cards with a continuous sheet of adhesive covering the entire opening without any protective layer of glassine can be inserted in the machine and the selected film observed and cut and mounted in the opening on the adhesive. But where the prepared cards have a marginal adhesive sheet, cut away at the central portion, a protective layer such as glassine is desirable and advantageous to protect the adhesive during the preliminary punching, printing, etc. operations preparatory to inserting the film therein. And with such previously prepared cards the improved apparatus of the present invention enables the protective sheet to be easily and rapidly removed and the selected film then inserted in the opening to give the finished card.
Such a finished card is illustrated in Fig. 14 with the film section it forced down on the thin adhesive sheet 2.
The improved stripping and mounting apparatus of the present invention is particularly advantageous for use inmounting microfilm sections in classification cards which are to be used or transparent inserts in openings in the cards,
such as inserts containing addresses typed or printed on translucent papers or onfilms. A roll of translucent paper having a series of addresses, etc. thereon, or a continuous roll of film havin the addresses printed photographically thereon can be used instead of microfilm, with projecting of the translucent section of paper or film containing the address to center it and bring it into proper position for mounting and by then mounting the address, etc. in the opening in the card in a similar manner to that above described in connection with the cutting and mounting of microfilms.
It will be evident, that the size and shape and selected portion of the film and forcing it into the opening in the card against the adhesive mate-' location of the opening in the card and of the translucent or transparent insert to be mounted therein can be varied, and that the location of the opening or openings in the cards can also be varied. Thus a card intended for addressing purposes may have an opening and translucent or transparent insert therein of suitable size and shape for the address, etc. It will be evident that variations can be made in the size and shape of the openings of the stripping and mounting machine .of the present invention to adapt it for cards having such different shaped openings and inserts to be mounted therein.
It will thus be seen that the present invention provides an improved stripping and mounting apparatus which can be simply and readily operated by hand for stripping a protective. cover sheet from the adhesive in the opening in the card and for projecting, centering, cutting and mounting a selected portion of transparent or translucent insert in the opening in the card.
It will further be seen that the improved apparatus is particularly advantageous for use in mounting a large number of microfilms or addresses, etc. in a large number of cards; and that the cards previously prepared for mounting can be observed and checked by the operator with the particular microfilm or address, etc. to be mounted in the card to insure correspondence of the prepared card with the film or other insert; and that the card can then be inserted in the apparatus, the stripping device operated to remove the protective cover sheet, and the selected microfilm or other insert then cut out and mounted in the opening, by simple manual operations of the machine, to give the completed card with the selected insert therein.
It will further be seen that the novel projecting, cutting and mounting device of the present invention enables the selected film to be observed and centered ready for cutting and mounting and then cut and mounted in the card in a single operation.
I claim:
' l. A mounting machine adapted for cutting l and mounting selected portions of film, etc. in
openings in cards having a thin adhesive sheet extending into each of said openings for the mounting of the film, etc. thereon, including a support for the film, etc. having an opening therein, means for moving the film across the opening in said support, a projector for projecting light through the opening in said support and through the film onto a screen whereby the portion of the film to be cut and mounted can be observed and selected, means for bringing the selected portion of the film in registraa 10 tion with the opening of the card in which the film is to be mounted, a support for the card in mounting position, and means for cutting out the rial therein. 2. A mounting machine adapted for .cutting and mounting selected portions of film, etc. in openings in cards havingxa thin' adhesive sheet extending into each of said openings for the mounting of the film, etc. thereon, including a support for the film having an opening therein of a size and shape corresponding to the opening in the card, means for moving the film across the opening in said support, a projector for projecting light through the opening in said support and through the film onto a screen whereby the portion of the film to be cut and mounted can be observed and selected, means for positioning a card with its opening in alignment with the opening in said film support and for supporting the card at the end of the opening in said film support remote from the film, and apunch member cooperating with the opening in said film support for cutting out the selected portion of the film and forcing 'it through said film support opening into the opening in the card against the adhesive material therein.

A mounting machine adapted for cutting and mounting a selected portion of film, etc. in an opening in a card having a thin adhesive sheet extending into said opening for the mounting of the film, etc. thereon, including a support for the film, etc. having an opening therein, means for moving the film across the opening in said support at one side thereof, means for supporting a card at the other side of said support with its opening in alignment with the opening in said film support, and a punch member'cooperating with the opening in said film support for cutting outa selected portion of the film and forcing it into the opening in the card against the adhesive material therein.
4. A mounting machine adapted for cutting and mounting selected portions of film, etc. in
mounting of the film, etc. thereon, including a support for the film, etc. having an opening therein, means for movin the film over said support at one side thereof, aprojector for projecting light throughthe opening in said support and through the film onto a screen whereby the portion of the film to be cut and mounted can be observed and selected, a hollow punch member at the side of the film opposite said support and in line with the opening in said film support through which light can also be projected, means for supporting a card at the other side 01' said support with its opening in alignment with the opening in said film support, said hollow punch member being cooperable with the opening in said film support acting as a die member to cut out the selected portion of the film and force it into the opening in the card against the adhesive material therein.

A mounting machine adapted for cutting and mounting selected portions of film, etc. in openings in cards having a thin adhesive sheet extending into each of 'said openings for the mounting of the film, etc. thereon, including a film-supporting plate having an opening therein, means for moving the film across one side of the plateover said opening, a hollow punch member located in alignment with said plate opening and at the. face of the film opposite said plate,- means tor projecting light through said plate opening and through the film onto a screen whereby the portion 01 the film to be cut and mounted can be observed and selected, a card-supporting plate stationary plate. and
movable at the other side of the film-supporting plate to support a card with its-op ning in alignment with the opening in said film supporting plate, and means for operating said hollow punch member to cut out the selected portion of the film and force it into the opening in the card against the adhesive material therein.

A machine for removing a temporary cover sheet from adhesive paper in an aperture of a card and for mounting a film, etc. in said aperture including a plate assembly made up oi stationary plates spaced apart and a movable cardsupporting plate slidable therebetween for supporting a card, the stationary plates having aligned openings, the card-supporting plate having an opening therein adapted to align with the aperture in a card supported thereon and the openin s in the stationary plates, means for removing the cover sheet from the adhesive paper in the aperture 01' the card when said aperture and the openings in the stationary plates and card-supporting plate are in alignment, said stationary plates havin a second series of openin s in alignment with each other, means for moving a film over said second series of openin s, a projector for proiecting light through the second series of openings and through the filmonto a screen whereby the portion 01. the film to be cut and mounted can be observed and selected, means for moving the card on said movable card-su porting plate and to move the latter to bring the aperture in the card in alignment with the second series of openings in the stationary plates with a solid portion 01' the movable plate in alignment with the aperture in the card, and means for cuttingout the selected portion of the film and forcing it into the a erture in the against the adhesive material therein.

A machine for removing a protective cover sheet from adhesive material in an aperture of a card and for mounting a fi m, etc. in said aperture. includin a plate assembly having a lower stationary plate with two openings therein, upper stationary plates spaced apart from said lower plate and each having an opening therein in alignment with an opening in the lower plate,
an intermediate card-supporting sliding plate with two openings therein adapted to be brou ht into alignment with the openings in said stationary plates, means for positioning a card on said sliding plate with the aperture therein in alignment with one series of aligned openings in the stationary and sliding plates, means for removing the cover sheet from the adhesive material in the aperture of the card while said aperture is in alignment with said one series of openings. a projector arranged to project light through the second series of aligned openings in said plates, means for supporting a film and moving it over said second series oi openings whereby light can be projected through said second series oi openings and through the film onto a screen to observe and select the portion of thefilm to be cut and mounted, means for moving the card on the sliding plate to a position with its aperture intermediate the openings in said sliding plate and to slide the latter to bring the aperture in the card in alignment with an opening of said second series in a means for cutting out the selected portionotthefilmandpressingitinio the aperture in the card against the adhesive material therein. In a machine for mounting a film section, etc. in'an aperture in a card provided with a layer oi adhesive material extending over said aperture, the combination of a block having a die opening, means for feeding a film strip across said die opening at one side of the block and for positioning any particular section oi said strip over said opening, a projection screen, a projector for projecting onto said screen the image of the film section framed in said die opening to indicate which portion of said film strip is positioned-over said die opening, a support at the other side of said block to support a card with the aperture in the card in alignment with said die opening, and a punch member cooperating with said die opening to cut out the selected section of the film and force it into the aperture in said card against said adhesive material.

A machine for mounting a film section, etc. in an aperture in a record card provided with a layer of adhesive material extending over said aperture, comprising a block having a die opening, means for feeding a film strip across said die opening at one side of the block and for framing any particular section of said strip in said opening, a reciprocable punch normally positioned at said one side 01' said block and having a central opening therein, a lens mounted on said punch over the opening therein, a viewing screen adapted to receive the image from said lens, means for passing light through said block and. punch to project the image of the film section framed in said die opening onto said screen, and a support at the other side of said block for supporting a card with the aperture in the card in alignment with said die opening, said reciprocating punch being adapted to cut out the selected illm section and force it into the aperture in the card.

In a card preparing machine, a card supporting and positioning plate assembly comprising a stationary plate provided with raised rims on its two opposite horizontally disposed edges, and having two spaced openings therein, a slide barfltted within a groove formed in said stationary plate and resting on one of said rims,
. said bar being adapted to slide longitudinally of said stationary plate, a movable card supporting plate supported on said stationary plate between said bar and the other of said rims and adapted to slide longitudinally of said stationary plate and having two correspondingly spaced openings therein a third plate overlying a portion of said movable plate and having an opening in alignment with one oi the openings in said stationary plate and a fourth plate located adjacent said third plate and overlying a portion of said movable plate and having an opening in alignment with the other opening in said stationary plate.
11. A machine for removing a temporary cover sheet from adhesive paper in an aperture of a card and-for mounting a film, etc. in said aperture, including a plate assembly made up of stationary plates spaced apart and amovable cardsupporting plate slidable therebetween for supporting a card, the stationary plates having aligned openings, the card-supporting plate having an opening therein adapted to align with the aperture-in a card supported thereon and the am: l9
openings in the stationary plates to permit removal of the cover sheet from the adhesive paper in the aperture of the card, said stationary plates having a second series of openings in alignment with each other, means for moving a film over said second series of openings, a projector for projecting light through the second series of openings and through the film onto a screen whereby the portion 01' the film to be cut and mounted can be predetermined and observed. means for moving the card on said-movable cardsupporting plate and to move said plate to bring the aperture in the card in alignment with the second series of openings in the stationary plates with a solid portion of the movable plate in alignment with the aperture in the card, and means for cutting out the selected portion of the film and forcing it into the aperture in the card against the adhesive material therein.
12. A mounting machine as defined in claim 3 wherein the card supporting means is provided with an opening in alignment with the opening in the film support. 1
13. A mounting machine as defined in claim 3 wherein the punch member has a passage there- 14 through to enable an operator to view said selected portion of the film therethrough.
14. A mounting machine as defined in claim 3 wherein the'punch member has a hollow portion and a source of light is mounted to project light through said hollow portion and the opening in the film support.
15. A mounting machine as defined in claim 3 wherein the punch member is hollow and means are provided for projecting light through the film support opening and punch member onto a screen whereby an image on the film can be prolected and observed.
