2 Claims.
This invention relates to a flywheel rotating tool.
Speaking more specifically the invention pertains to a tool having jaws applicable to the flywheel of the engine of an automobile which render the tool usable to turn said flywheel in the direction and to the extent that may be necessary to place the movable parts of the engine in the position desired by the workman.
In diflerent types of cars the flywheel rim varies in breadth from the edge of the ring gear, therefore necessitating the use of an adjustable tool to grip the rims of the various types of flywheels.
Also, in some automobiles flywheels of a ringless type are used. In order to adapt the tool for use on that type of flywheels the tool is provided with a reversible jaw having a projecting part which may be utilized either to grip the interior of the first mentioned type of flywheel, or to engage the clutch cover carried by the last mentioned type of flywheel.
Among objects of the invention are to provide a flywheel turning tool which is of a simpler structure, which can be manufactured at a lower cost, and which is furnished with an improved tool, separately shown, the gripping jaw being adjusted for application to the ring gear carrying type of flywheels, part of the handle being broken out to shorten the view.
Fig. 2 is a view showing mostly in section, but partly in elevation, the tool as applied to the rim portion of the ring gear carrying type of flywheel. A portion of the flywheel and the tools handle are broken away.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the structure of Fig. 2, the plane of section being indicated by line 3-3 on the latter view.
Fig. 4 is a View of the applicator part of the tool showing the detachable gripping jaw a justed for use on flywheels of the rimless type.
Referring in detail to the drawing, my newly invented tool comprises a non-adjustable, channel shaped strap iron jaw 5 having a body portion 6, a shorter auxiliary flange l at one side of the channel and a longer main flange 8 at the opposite side of the channel. The body portion 6 of the jaw 5 is centrally apertured to have tightly fitted into it and welded one end ,of a tool handle .9 consisting of a rod whereby the tool is opfated, said handle projecting from that side of said jaw which is opposite to said channel and having a milled portion 9a. Said jaw body portion 6 lies in a plane which extends at a right angle to said rod.
The main flange 5 of the jaw 5 has a central countersunk aperture tapped into it to provide for anchoring within it a pin it having an internal head 15a within the countersink ,andhaving a winged nut I i screwing onto it. Said pin It is utilized to secure an adjustable and reversible jaw E2 to the aforesaid non-adjustable jaw 5. Said adjustable jaw is an L-shaped piece of strap metal having a shorter basal limb 53 and a longer upstanding (as viewed in Fig. 1) limb it. A. Iongitudinal slot 55 extends through said limb if; to receive adjustably the aforesaid pin Hi, the winged nut ll being tightened to secure the two jaws in the desired adjusted relation to each other.
The slotted end portion of the limb It of the adjustable jaw is shown transversely ribbed or serrated at IS on one side or face and at it on its other face and (as best shown in Fig. 2) the limb 8 of the non-adjustable jaw has a likewise ribbed or serrated outer face it, these roughened surfaces cooperating to aid in securely holding the jaw M in its adjusted position whether its basal limb I3 is directed inwardly as in Fig. l in an underlying relation to the channel of jaw or out wardly as in Fig. 4.
In Figs. 2 and 3 the device is shown clamped to the peripheral portion of a conventional engine flywheel 26. Around one of its faces this fly-- wheel has near its periphery an annular lateral rib or rise 2! which is rectangular in cross section and is spaced somewhat inwardly from the periphery of the wheel thus producing an angular peripheral recess 22 to receive the toothed flywheel ring gear 23 carrying teeth 24. The applied device is shown in Figs. 2 and 3 gripping both said ring gear 23 and annular rise 2|, the efficiency thereof being increased by reason of the jaw l and the work to which it is applied being in axial alinement with the rod 9.
When the rimless type of flywheel is encountered, before the channel shaped jaw 5 of the tool is applied to the rim of the wheel (which in that case is narrow enough to be spanned by said jaw) the detachable jaw i2 is attached to the jaw 5 in the position shown in Fig. 4 so that the basal limb l3 of said jaw l2 will be adjustable in a take hold of the intervening part of the flywheel in a pipe-wrench fashion.
I claim:
1. A flywheel gripping tool comprising a handle consisting of a rod, a channel shaped strap metal jaw seatable astride the periphery of the ring gear of a flywheel permanently attached to one end of said rod, said rod extending from the central portion of that side of said jaw which is opposite to its channel so that the jaw is in axial alinement with the rod, said jaw having side flanges which are connected by a body portion having in it a central seat for the attached end of the rod, said body portion lying in a plane which extends at a right angle to said rod, an L- shaped strap metal jaw having a longer and a shorter limb, there being a longitudinal slot through said longer limb, a screwthreaded pin secured to one of said side flanges of said channel shaped jaw, said pin projecting from the outer side of said flange in relation to the channel to pass slidably through and project beyond the slotted portion of said L-shaped jaw, and a nut 4 applicable to the projecting portion of said pin to clamp said jaws to each other either with the shorter limb of said L-shaped jaw underlying said channel shaped jaw or extending in the opposite direction.
2. A tool for rotating flywheels comprising a saddle-forming jaw consisting of a channel shaped metal strap having a web portion which unites flanges of unequal length, a handle-forming rod secured in an endwise manner to the central portion of said web in a right angularly projecting relation to that side of the latter which forms the back side of said channel opening, and an L-shaped jaw consisting of two limbs one of which is longer than the other, said longer limb being adjustably secured in an overlapping manner to the longer flange of said saddle-shaped jaw, the other limb of said L-shaped jaw forming a jaw element which cooperates with said saddle-shaped jaw to grip the rim portion of the flywheel.
