BOX
Filed Nov. 17, 1944 INVENTORK Jam/77a fife/7e Patented Dec. 6, 1949 UNITED OFFICE BOX Jerome Stone, Chicagm-Ilt Application Novemberlfi, 1944', SeriafNo; 563L849.
10"Cla'inis: 1 This invention relates to new and" useful'improvements in boxes and more particularly to boxes and cartons preferably made from card'- board or the like adapted'for use in packing gar ments.
The commercial acceptability ofboxes'of this" character in a large measure is dependent uponthe speed and convenienceby which the box may be assembled to contain the garment or the like: In most fields wheresuchboxesare employed, the boxes are assembled by clerks whoknow little if anything regarding the construction of the box, and manifestly if it were required of such clerk's to study the box construction in order to' ascertain the method of assembling the same to confine the garment therein, the clerks soon become careless and eventually discouraged; With this in mind, it is an object of this invention toprovide a box of the character more particularly hereinafter described, which may be as sembled to confine a garment therein in themostexpedient manner, requiringa minimum-effort on the part of the clerk.
Yet a further and equally important objectof the invention is to provide a handle'for the box which cooperates with keeper tabsof the: box to latch the box coverand bottom in con-- fined relation with respect to each other by and through a simple and expedient manipulation of the handle while assembling the same with respect to the box.
Other objects will appear more fully herein after.
This invention consists in the novel combina-' tion and arrangement of partstobe herein after described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by a reference to the accompanying drawing; in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a box embody-- ing my improvements;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspectiveview illus-- trating one step in associating the handle with the box;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective View illustrating another step in associating the handlewith respect to the box; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view ofthe boxwith the handle completely associated therewith;
Referring more particularlyto thedrawingsiri which the preferred form of construction of my invention is illustrated andby'which the sever'al objects of my invention are accomplished, improved box is indicated at I01 This box-com Thisto ?sectionflfconiprises a wall I? having a reeessed rtion I-3 "with' a relatively narrow projection l'flpr'ojecting into'the confines of the" recess 13 for reasons hereinafter more fully setforth. on opposite sides" of the recess it there is struck-from thew-s11 l2, keeper tabs i 5. Thesekeeper tabs [5 are scored transversely as at f6 projection [42- Onopposite sides of this'sl'ot I9 are other slotsjfl' wh'ich areadapted to register with theslots 2|- forined inthe' wall 12 and which open into the openings 22' providedb'y the struck out keeper-tabs l5; A preformed handle ism dic'ated at 23. This" handle comprises a ham gri portion24which' is adapted'to be'project'edf through the slot [S -and; when thus prOj ectedand with the bottom section II confined in the coversection-I2be prevented from passing downward 1y through-this slot lll by virtue of the p ojection M which; asSIioWnii'i FigL-Zj extends over the slot I9 and closesth'e-same. on opposite sides of thishand grip portion Hf there are provided loops or raised portions 25' which are auepre'd tb'pr-oject-through the'slotsZll. When the b'otterii section H is confined in the-" cover section I2 and the raised portions 25pro= jecte'd through the" slots 20, this projection of" these raised portions-will engage the keeper tabs l5 and rimtnreor displace these keeper tabs from the'wall I2, intheirfianher'shown in Fig. 2.
Whenthese raised portions 25 are projected through the slots 20' and H of the bottom se'c-'= tion' l l aind theicover'section I2; the keeper tabs are adapte d' tb be projected beneath these raisedportions, and this is accomplished by gras ing: thefingertahs W; slightly buckling the keeper tabs l5 oirtheii score-lines l'6, in the manner" shown iri 'Fig; 3; and then projecting the keeper tabs beneath the raised portions 25; In this position of th'e' keepert'abs with respect tethe raised portions-i'i; the cover and bottom section of the boxilliare seourely locked in confined post-- tion' with respect zt'o-'e'ach' other.
To complete-the invention, the handle 23-'pro'- vides the e'xte'nded portions" 26 which engage'berieath" the under" surface of the wall l8 when-me han'dlf isiiri the position shown in Fig. 3, theseexteiided' portion's 26' serving in this capacity to reinforce the handle in the function of carrying the'box when the' h'an'd grips the hand grip por prises bottomsection H and top sectio'ri l2? 5'6 com-rm suewpurpbse:
To distend the bottom portion H from confined position with respect to the cover portion l2, all that is necessary to be done is to remove the keeper tabs from beneath the raised portions 25. This permits the handle to drop down in a position to dispose the hand grip portion 24 upon projection M, in which position of the handle the bottom section II may be moved from confined position with respect to the cover section l2.
In the form of the box shown in the drawings, I have shown the cover section II! hingedly connected to the bottom section I l. Except in so far as is necessary to the proper functioning of my invention, the box I may be of any approved construction now well known in the art.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
