(Claim- 117)- The present inventio'n relates to a new and usefiu improvement in ship's doors and frames therefor and has for its primary object to provide an all-steel structure of this character embodying 'a triple weatherstripped landing seal at the edges thereof to providea substantially air and weather tight seal between the edges of the doorandimme.

A further object of the invention is to provide a plurality of relative narrow landings between the edges of the door and the landing frame to provide an air and weather tight seal at the edges of the door and also to facilitate the freeing of the door should the same become frozen.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and install in operative position and which is otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the door and landing frame.
Figure 2 is a rear elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is a top plan view.
Figures 4, 5 and 6 are fragmentary sectional views taken respectively on the lines 44, 5-5, and 66 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention. The numeral 5 designates the landing frame generally for the door and which includes a top frame structure 6, side frame structures 1 and 8, and a bottom frame structure 9, all of said frame structures being of channel iron construction having its open edges welded to the outer frame I of the door as indicated at H. The bottom frame 2 member 9 has its open edges similarly welded to the upper surface of a sill structure l2. 7

The other edge of the door plate is provided with a conventional form of lock l8 including knobs I9.
To the inner surface of the door plate l4 adjacent its top, bottom and locking edge is welded one edge of a strap iron which projects inwardly from the door plate for entering the channel members l3. The inwardly projecting edge of the strap iron 20 is adapted to engage a resilient metal Weatherstrip 2| secured to the inside of the channel member I3.
As will be apparent from an inspection of Figures 4 and 5 of the drawings, the inner surface of the door plate I4 abuts the front end of the channel member I3 and the rearwardly projecting edge of the strap iron 20 also abuts the weatherstrip 2| whereby to provide a triple landing seal for the top, bottom and locking edge of the door.
To the inside of the door plate 14 at the hinged edge thereof is welded an angle iron member 22 which includes a flange portion 23 spaced parallel from the door plate I4 and adapted to abut the outer side of the channel landing frame I at the hinged side of the frame. To the outer side of the channel member 1 is also secured a resilient metal Weatherstrip 24 which includes an outwardly curved lip 25 behind which the end of the flange 23 is adapted to enter to provide a weather tight seal with the landing frame in a manner as will be apparent from inspection of Figure 6 of the drawings.
This construction likewise provides a triple landing seal for the hinged edge of the door by reason of the door plate l4 abutting the flange 3 [6, the flange 23 of the angle iron 22 abutting the landing frame I and the free edge of the flange 23 also abutting and entering behind the lip 25 of the Weatherstrip 24.
To the inner surface of the door plate 14 is secured a reticulated metal frame 26 having flanges 21 projecting inwardly from its frame members for welding to the inner surface of the door plate as shown at 28, the flanges 21 stiffening the edges of the frame 26 as well as stiffening and reinforcing the central portion thereof and to thus provide a hollow frame within which insulation material 29 may be packed. The insulation material is secured in the frame 26 by relatively thin gauge cover plates 30 secured to the outer surface of the frame 26.
The frame member 26 reinforces and insulates the central portion of the door, while the edges of the door plate l4 possess suflicient flexibility to facilitate breaking away thereof from the landing frame should the edges of the door become frozen.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in the art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be undersood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A structural unit for ships comprisin an outer door frame, a door landing frame fitted in said outer frame and comprising top, side, and bottom structures, respectively, all of channel 4 iron form with open sides fixed to said outer frame, each structure embodying a front edge channel extension, a door hinged to said outer frame to close flush against said channel extensions and thereby form a, seal around the edges of the door, and coacting devices on said door and in said extensions, respectively, forming seals in said extensions when the door is closed.
2. A structural unit for ships comprising an outer door frame, a door landing frame fitted in said outer frame and comprising top, side and bottom structures, respectively, all of channel iron form with open sides fixed to said outer frame, each structure embodying a front edge channel extension, a door hinged to said outer frame to close flush against said channel extensions and thereby form a seal around the edges of the door, seal forming bars projecting from said door along the edges thereof for entering said channel extensions when the door is closed, and resilient weather strips in said channel extensions for coaction with said bars to form seals in said extensions when said door is closed.
