This invention relates to improvements in belt polishing and grinding machin'e.--
The principal objects of-this inventiorrare-1 First, to provide a belt polishing or-grinding machine for use witha turret type-rotatable 1 work holder in which the-belt and its driving mechanism can be universally adjusted to operate upon various portions *ofwork pieces carried by the chucks on the turret.

The rear face of the tilt bar 28 defines the tapered ways 34 which slidably engage mating portions on a slide bar 35. The slide bar carries a screw 35 engaged with an ear 3? on the tilt bar 28 to adjust the slide bar laterally. The slide bar defines a slot 38 receiving the support 1 arm 39 which is pivotally secured in the slot by the pivot bolt 49. The slide bar is provided with an arcuate slot 4| (see Fig. 2) through which the clamping screw 42 extends to engage the support arm and clamp the arm to the slide bar.
The left or inner end of the arm 39 (as viewed in Fig. 3) is provided with a flange 43 bolted to one side of the platelike support member 44. The rear corner of the plate 44 carries the bushing 45 which rotatably supportsthe drive shaft 45. The left or inner end of the shaft 46 carries a drive pulley 4i and the outer end of the shaft carries the multi-V-belt pulley 48. The upper edge of the plate 44 carries the laterally disposed and 5 sloping mounting plate 49 on which an electric motor 59 is supported. The motor is arranged to drive the drive shaft with the V-belts 55.
The forward edge of the plate 44 is provided with a boss 52 supporting the idler shaft 53. The idler shaft 53 serves to rotatably support an idler pulley 54 in the plane of the drive pulley 47. The idler shaft 53 also pivotally supports the forward end of an arm 55. The arm 55 extends rearwardly between the pulleys 41 and 54 and the plate 44 and immediate of its ends is enlarged as at 56 to receive the stub shaft 51. The lower edge of the plate 44 is notched or cut away as at 58 to clear the enlarged portion of the arm. The stub shaft 5'! rotatably carries a backing wheel 59.
The rear end of the arm 55 is urged downwardly by a coil spring 59, the upper end of which bears against an adjusting screw 6| threaded through a boss 52 secured to the side of the plate 44. The lock nut 63 is provided for clamping the screw in its adjusted position.
Located generally above the backing wheel 59 and secured to the side of the plate 44 as by welding is a yoke shaped bracket 64 the arms of which are apertured to pass the threaded rod 55. A coil spring 96 is positioned between one arm of the bracket 54 and a nut 61 threaded on the rod to urge the rod upwardly and forwardly in the bracket. The upper end of the rod 65 carries a yoke 68 rotatably supporting a tracking pulley 69.
A continuous abrasive belt 10 is looped around the pulleys ll, 54, and 69 and the nut 61 can be adjusted to vary the tension in the belt. Suitable adjusting means not illustrated but well known in the art can be employed to turn the rod 95 in the bracket 64 to tilt the pulley 69 and cause the belt to track accurately on the pulley. Adjustment of the screw 6| will vary the pressure with which the backing wheel 59 is pressed against the inside of the belt 79 between the drive pulley 4i and idler pulley 54.
From the foregoing discussion it should be apparent that a grinder can be located adjacent to one of the working stations 3 of the turret l and vertically and laterally adjusted by means of the screw H and the hand wheel I3. The tilt bar and support arm can then be tilted by operation of the Worm and pinion 24 and 26 to bring the working reach of the belt 10 into the general surface which it is desired to grind on the work piece. Angular adjustment of the belt and grinder in a second plane can then be effected by swinging the arm 39 in the slot 38 and the grinder can be clamped in a position by tightening the screws 42 and 53. With the fluid hose 2! connected through the automatic controls of the turret my grinder can be made to tilt away from each succeeding work piece while the piece is indexed and then swing back into operating position to rapidly grind or polish any given surface on the work piece.
The pressure of the spring 59 can be completely relaxed in which case the working reach of the belt can be made to wrap around and conform to a surface of the work which is curved longitudinally with respect to the axis of the work. The belt will thus grind surfaces which it would be impossible to grind with a grinding wheel.
The combination of the turret type work holder and several of my grinders is particularly effective to completely finish a work piece at one manual operation because by proper adjustment of the screws (ii on the several grinders, the belts can be arranged to operate on all surfaces of the work piece. Part of the backing wheels 59 can be adjusted to have tight contact with the work to grind a regular surface of rotation while others of the backing wheels may be backed off to permit the belt to wrap around and conform to curved surfaces as described above.
I have thus described a highly practical com mercial embodiment of my belt grinder so that others may reproduce the same with such minor modifications as desired without further description.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A belt grinding and polishing machine adapted to be used in conjunction with and adjusted relative to the turret of a rotary work holder comprising, a base having a vertical column adjustably carried thereby for vertical and lateral adjustment relative to said base, a yoke on the top of said column, a fluid operated cylinder carried by the upper end of said column and having an upwardly extending piston rod, a head pivotally mounted on said yoke and overlying said piston rod for periodic tilting engagement thereby, a generally horizontal tilt shaft journaled in said head and having a pinion, a worm carried by said head for turning said pinion, a tilt bar secured to said shaft and having a set of ways formed therein, a slide bar mounted in I said ways, screw means for adjusting said slide bar on said tilt bar, a support arm on said slide bar arranged for tilting adjustment about an axis normal to said shaft, 2. platelike support member secured to the end of said support arm and having a flange on its upper edge, a motor mounted on said flange, a driving pulley rotatably mounted on said support member and arranged to be driven by said motor, an idler pulley rotatably mounted on said support member, a yoke member rotatably mounted and linearly adjustably mounted on said support member, spring means urging said yoke member away from said pulleys, a third pulley supported by said yoke member. an abrasive belt rotatably mounted on said pulleys, a lever arm journaled on the same shaft as said idler pulley, an idle shaft carried by said lever arm, said support member being cut away to clear said idle shaft, a backing wheel mounted on said idle shaft and located between said driving and idler pulleys, and a spring adjustably comairman pressed between; said support member and said leven arm for urging said backing wheel against the inside ofsaid belt.
2..A belt grinding and polishingmachine comprising, a base havinga column adjustably carried thereby for vertical and lateral adjustment relative to said base, a yoke on the top of said column, a fluid operated cylinder carried by the upper end of said column and having an upwardly extending piston rod, a head pivotally mounted on said yoke and overlying said piston rod for periodic tilting engagement thereby, a generally horizontal tilt shaft journaled in said head and having a pinion, a worm carried by said headfor turning said pinion, a tilt bar secured totsaid shaft and having a set of ways formed therein, clamping screws for clamping said tilt ban to said head, a slide bar mounted in said ways, screw means for adjusting said slide bar on said tilt bar, a support arm on said slide bar arranged for tilting adjustment about an axis normal to said shaft, a platelikesupport member" having a flange on its upper edge and secured to the end of said support arm, a motor mounted:
on'said flange, a driving pulley rotatably mounted on said support member and arranged to be driven by said motor, an idler pulley rotatably mounted on said supportmember, a yoke member rotatably and linearly adj ustably mounted on said support. member, spring means urging said yoke member away from said pulleys, a third pulley supported by said yoke member, an abrasive belt rotatably mounted on said pulleys, a lever arm: journaled on the same shaft as said idler pulley, arr-idle shaft carried by said lever arm, a back! ing-wheel mounted on said idle shaft and located between said driving and idler pulleys, and spring means adjustably compressed between said sup port member and said lever arm for urging said:

A belt grinding and polishing machine comprising, a base, a support arm on said base arranged for tilting adjustment longitudinally of the arm about a generally horizontal axis and laterally of the arm about a movable axis transverse to the arm, a support member secured to the end of said support arm, a motor mounted for tilting motion longitudinally with said support arm, a driving pulley rotatably mounted on said support member and arranged to be driven by said motor, an idler pulley rotatably mounted on said support member, a yoke member linearly adjustably mounted on said support member, means urging said yoke member away from a line between said pulleys, a third pulley supported by said yoke member, an abrasive belt rotatably mounted on said pulleys to rotate in a plane parallel to said second axis, a lever arm pivoted on said support member, an idle shaft carried by said lever arm, a backing wheel mounted on said idle shaft and located between said driving and idler pulleys, and spring means carried by said support member for urging said backing Wheel against the inside of said belt.
8. A belt grinding and polishing machine comprising, a base, a support arm on said base arranged for tilting adjustment longitudinally of the arm about a generally horizontal axis and laterally of the arm about a movable axis transverse to the arm, a support member secured to the end of said support arm, a motor mounted for tilting motion longitudinally with said support arm, a driving pulley rotatably mounted on said support member and arranged to be driven by said motor, an idler pulley rotatably mounted on said support member, a third pulley linearly adjustably mounted on said support member, means urging said third pulley away from a line between said other pulleys, an abrasive belt rotatably mounted on said pulleys to rotate in a plane parallel to said second axis, a lever arm,
pivoted on said support member, an idle shaft carried by said lever arm, a backing wheel mounted on said idle shaft and located between said driving and idler pulleys, and spring means carried by said backing member for urging said support wheel against the inside of said belt.
9. A belt grinding and polishing machine comprising, a column, a fluid operated cylinder carried by the upper end of said column and having an upwardly extending movable portion, a head pivotally mounted on said column and overlying said movable portion for tilting engagement thereby, a generally horizontal tilt shaft journaled in said head, screw means carried by said head for turning said tilt shaft, a tilt bar secured to said shaft, a support arm on said tilt bar arranged for tilting adjustment about an axis normal to said shaft, a platelike support member secured to the end of said support arm, a motor mounted on said support member, a driving pulley rotatably mounted on said support member and arranged to be driven by said motor, an idler pulley rotatably mounted on said support member, a third pulley supported by said support member, an abrasive belt rotatably mounted on said pulleys, a lever arm tiltably mounted on said support member, an idle shaft carried by said lever arm, a backing wheel mounted on said idle shaft and located between said driving and idler pulleys, and spring means adjustably compressed between said backing member and said lever arm for urging said support wheel against the inside of said belt.

In combination with a turret type rotary work holder having a plurality of spindles rotatable about their individual axes and translatable between a plurality of working stations, a plurality of grinding mechanisms associated with said working stations, each of said mechanisms comprising, a base, an extensible support arm projecting from said base and arranged for tilting adjustment longitudinally of the arm about a generally horizontal axis and laterally of the arm about a movable axis transverse to the arm, a support member secured to the end of said support arm, a motor mounted for tilting motion longitudinally with said support arm, a driving pulley rotatably mounted on said support member and arranged to be driven by said motor, an idler pulley rotatably mounted on said support member, a yoke member linearly adjustably mounted on said support member, means urging said yoke member away froma line between said pulleys, a third pulley supported by said yoke member, an abrasive belt rotatably mounted on said pulleys, a lever arm pivoted on said support member, an idle shaft carried by said lever arm, a backing wheel mounted on said idle shaft and located between said driving and idler pulleys, and spring means carried by said support member for urging said backing wheel against the inside of said belt.

In combination with a turret type rotary work holder having a plurality of spindles rotatable about their individual axes and translatable between a plurality of working stations, a plurality of grinding mechanisms associated with :said working stations, each of said mechanisms comprising, a column, a fluid operated cylinder carried by the upper end of said column and having an upwardly extending movable portion, a head pivotally mounted on said column and overlying said movable portion for tilting engagement thereby, a generally horizontal tilt shaft journaled in said head, screw means carried by said head for turning said tilt shaft, a tilt bar secured to said shaft, a support arm on said tilt bar arranged for tilting adjustment about an axis normal to said shaft, a platelike support member secured to the end of said support arm, a motor mounted on said support member, a driving pulley rotatably mounted on said support member and arranged ,to be driven by said motor, an idler pulley rotatably mounted on said support member, a third pulley supported by said support member, an abrasive belt rotatably mounted on said pulleys, a lever arm tiltably mounted on said support member, an idle shaft carried by said lever arm, a backing wheel mounted on said idle shaft and located between said driving and idler pulleys, and spring means adjustably compressed between said backing member and said lever arm for urging said support wheel against the inside of said belt.

In combination with a turret type rotary work holder having a plurality of spindles rotatable about their individual axes and translatable ,between a plurality of working stations, a plu- 9 rality of grinding mechanisms associated with said working stations, each of said mechanisms comprising, a base, a support arm extensible from and vertically adjustable on said base and arranged for tilting adjustment longitudinally of the arm about a generally horizontal axis and laterally of the arm about a movable axis transverse to the arm, a support member secured to the end of said support arm, a motor mounted on said support member, a driving pulley rotatably mounted on said support member and arranged to be driven by said motor, an idler pulley rotatably mounted on said support member, a third pulley linearly adjustably mounted on said support member, means urging said third pulley away from said other pulleys, and an abrasive belt rotatably mounted on said pulleys.
