UNITED STATES PATENT OFF'ECE- DRILL PRESS CLAMP Virgil W. Eshleman, Wichita, Kans.

1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a safety device for application to drill presses, whereby the jig and workpiece can be clamped rigidly on the drill press without coming loose during the drilling operation.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a clamping device designed for application to a drill press to hold a jig and workpiece in position, wherein there is provided a single easily manipulatable element for easily and rapidly securing the work and jig and/or releasing the same as may be desired.
One of the principal features of this safety vise is that it holds the workpiece securely. Often on a drill press the jig will come loose and start swinging, thus causing injury to the hands, face and body of the operator before the switch can be reached to cut off the power.
The vise of the present invention is secured to the drill press and at all times is ready for the operator to use. It generally comprises a clamp or collar secured to the press post or column and carrying a pair of forwardly directed shanks between which is pivotally supported an end of a press arm- Associated with the press arm and Voscillatably carried by and between the shanks is a cam element with means for turning the same. The cam element when turned in one direction presses upwardly against the inner end of the arm and moves the outer end down to clamp the work onto the drill table. Reverse oscillation of the cam effectsrelease of the arm so that the jig and work may be removed.
With these and other features in View, the invention will readily be understood from the following description with the aid of the attached drawing, which forms part of this application and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, with some parts broken away, of the vise as secured on the drill press column; and
Figure 2 is a perspective View of a drill jig arm as shown.
One embodiment of this invention is illustrated in the drawing, wherein numeral I represents the drill press column here shown as consisting of an upright, round post which supports the drill press head structure.
The vise consists of a sleeve or band II which ts tightly around the column I0 and is permanently secured thereon so that it cannot be removed unless the drill press is dismantled.
Welded to this sleeve II- is a pair of forwardly directed, parallel Shanks I2, I3 which are spaced 2 apart sufficiently to permit a jig arm I4 to enter between them. Through transversely directed, mating holes I5 in said Shanks I2, I3 and the jig arm I is inserted a pivot bolt or pin I6 which supports said jig arm between said vise Shanks I2, I3. The rear ends of the Shanks I2 and I3 have transversely aligning bearings I1 one only of which is illustrated, intended for supporting a cam shaft I8. The shaft I8 has a cam member I9 removably secured thereon between the shanks and at one end on the outer side of the adjacent shank, a clamping lever 2U is secured. This lever is limited in its rearward or locking swinging movement by a stud 2 I' on the sleeve II. In this locked position the cam 9 abuts with its high point, or the surface on the longest radius,
against the underside of the jig arm Ill, thereby oscillating the jig arm to force the outer end down into clamping position. By swinging the lever 2li in opposite direction, the cam pressure is released and the jig arm I4 can be reversely removed. The jig arm is shaped with an open guide 22 for the tool.
This jig arm I4 can now be exchanged for another arm Illa, having a cylindrical aperture 22a for guiding a tool and transverse openings ISa and IIa for securing the same between the shank arms I2 and I3.
By removing the shaft I1 and the cam, a securing pin, not shown, can be inserted through the bearings I'I and the rear opening I'I'a, which, in association with the pivot pin I6, inserted through holes I5 and the bore Ita, will hold the arm Illa securely between the Shanks.
Different size adapters may be inserted in the opening 22a, in the outer end of the arm lila.
Any other jig arms similarly equipped may, of course, be employed for interchange with jig arm I4.
It is to be understood that the invention as herein disclosed may be varied from the details described and shown without departure from the spirit of the subjoined claim.
I claim:
A safety vise for use upon a drill press having an upright column and a work support, comprisl ing a member to be secured to the column, a
pair of forwardly directed spaced arms rigid with the member, a relatively long arm having one end portion disposed between the spaced arms, means for pivotally holding the elongated arm between the spaced arms, a shaft rotatably supported by the spaced arms inwardly of the pivotal mounting of the long arms, a cam carried by the shaft for engagement with the long arm' from below, an operating lever carried by the shaft, and means UNITED STATES PATENTS for limiting the throw of the lever when the high Number Name Date point of the cam is uppermost. 557,955 Boyer Apr. 7, 1896 i 5 905,095 Parker Nov. 24, 1908 VIRGIL W.
