Description

Oct. 25,1949. E. D. KISSLING PLASTIC PICTURE FRAME Filed April 5, 1945 INVENTOR, EDMUNDD. KISSLING BY fiIZ/VJX Patented Oct. 25, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PLASTIC PICTURE FRAME Edmund D. Kissling, New York, N. Y.
Application April 5, 1945, Serial No. 586,706
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a frame, and more particularly in a picture frame.
More specifically, the present invention proposes the construction of a picture frame characterized by having a twisted plastic frame member and two glass plates supported by the frame member, the glass plates being adapted to display a picture or photograph disposed between them.
Still further it is proposed to provide a picture frame as aforesaid in which the frame member has a loop base, longitudinally aligned base members and vertical uprights at the ends of the base members, the base members being connected to the loop base in a manner to provide a groove for holding the bottom of the plates of glass and the tops of the uprights being formed in a manner to provide grooVes for holding the opposite sides of the plates.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a picture frame member constructed in accordance with this invention, the glass plates being indicated in dotdash lines.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The picture frame, according to the present invention, is of the present invention shown in the drawings forming a part formed from plastic appropriately shaped. The plastic may be clear or transparent or may be variously colored. The plastic stock may be of various shapes, but is preferably of rectangular strip shape. The frame is made of a single strip of plastic.
The frame member I0 is, as aforesaid, made of a single strip of rectangular plastic stock, preferably clear or transparent. It has a loop base II which is not twisted and which rests on its narrow edges, providing maximum base strength. The opposite ends of the loop base H continue into base members, l2, which are aligned along the front-bottom of the picture frame. Vertical members [3 extend upwardly from ends of the base members [2. The upper or free ends M of the vertical members l3 are bent inwardly toward each other. These ends M are not twisted. The vertical parts of the vertical members are twisted like a cork-screw, the twist being similar throughout the entire length of each vertical part, but the two vertical parts being twisted in opposite directions. The juncture of the end M with the vertical part of member l3 forms a groove IS.
The base members l2 are twisted similarly to their respective vertical members I3 from adjacent the vertical members l3 almost to the loop base H. At the juncture of each base member l2 with its end of the loop base II, the twist is reversed at I6 and connected with the base member to form a groove I'I. Thus two spaced grooves l! are provided. Two plates of glass I9, between which may be disposed a picture or photograph or the like, are mounted in the grooves I! at their bottoms and retained in a slightly inclined position by the grooves I5 and free ends M. The plates are inclined, adding to the appearance of the picture frame, due to the fact that the grooves I! are forward of the free ends [4.
The present invention provides a strong and simple picture frame in which the glass plates are easily assembled and disassembled, and pictures mounted. The plastic is hard enough to be very strong and yet is not hard enough to scratch furniture or the like on which the picture frame is disposed.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
An article of manufacture, comprising a picture frame having a base and side upright members, the base being formed with a lateral loop and side arms and the uprights having inwardly.
directed terminal supports, the base and the uprights being constructed of a single piece of material, and the side arms and the uprights being formed with helical twists disposed forwardly of the terminal supports, the helical twists of the side arms forming stops for the forward side of the bottom edge portion of a picture and the loop having seats to receive the picture, and the terminal supports of the uprights being disposed in line with said seats, whereby a picture element may be disposed on said loop seats and held against displacement by said uprights, said terminal supports, said twisted arms and said loop seats.
