Application December 12, 1947, Serial No. 791,331
(C1. 2li- 10.)Y
6 Claims.
My invention relates to pencil holders which are arranged for attachment to a dial telephone, and included in the objects of my invention are:
First, to provide a pencil holder which is arranged for attachment to the finger stop of a dial telephone` but which does not in any manner damage the telephone or interfere with its use.
Second, to provide a pencil holder of this type which may be readily and quickly fastened in place or removed without the use of tools but which remains secure against accidental dislodgment.
Third, to provide a pencil holder which incorporates novel clamping means for effecting a yieldable but firm grip on the linger stop of a telephone. Y
Fourth, to provide a pencil holder which presents a readable, visible area suitable for an advertising message.
With the above and other objects in View as may appear hereinafter, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective View of my pencil holder.
Figure 2 is a top or plan View thereof indicating by broken lines the relative position of the nger stop and dial of a telephone.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view thereof as viewed from the plane 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional View thereof taken through 4--4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view through 5-5 of Figure 2 showing particularly the clamp jaws and their relationship to the iinger stop of a telephone.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional View in the same plane as Figure 4 showing a modified form of journal for the clamp lever.
Figure 7 is a similar sectional view showing another modied form of journal for the clamp lever.
My pencil holder includes a base plate which is semicircular in form. One edge is straight and is provided with a strip 2 which is folded under the plate and connected thereto by a web 3. The web 3 does not extend the length of the strip 2 but terminates to form a slot 4 between the strip 2 and the base plate I.
The strip 2 is provided at its free extremity with a notch 5 disposed in an acute angular relation to the longitudinal axis of the strip. The base plate is provided with a notch 6 located vertically above the notch 5. The two notches form spaced xed jaws of a clamp.
Pivotally mounted between the strip 2 and the base plate I by means of a journal pin l is a lever 8. One end of the lever 8 protrudes through the slot I and is provided with a notch S disposed in an acute angular relation with the longitudinalV axis of the lever to form the movable jaw of a clamp. The notches 5 and E are sorrelated to the notch 3 that they fit over and grip opposite edges of the upright portion A of a telephone nger stop B.
The lever 8 includes an arm I Il extending under the base plate I and terminating in a depending portion II. A spring I2 is connected to the depending portion II and to the strip 2 at its extremity remote from the notchk 5. The spring I2 is relatively stiff, and the length of the arm I!) is substantially greater than the portion of the lever having the movable jaw or notch 9 so that the jaws grip the linger stop tightly.
The base plate I preferably extends laterally from the linger stop in a plane more or less parallel with the dial of the telephone. The surface of the base plate I is preferably flat and is adapted to receive a correspondingly shaped advertising card I3 which may be secured thereto by tongues I4 struck from the surface of the plate.
A pencil mounting tongue I5 extends downwardly and outwardly from the curved margin of the base plate I. The tongue I5 is provided with a hole I6 adapted to receive a pencil or other writing implement.
In the construction as shown in Figures 2 and 4 a journal pin 1 is provided which protrudes through the base plate I. It is not necessary that the journal for the lever 8 extend through the base plate. First, the strip 2 may be provided with an upwardly directed extrusion I1, as shown in Figure 6, over which the lever 8 is fitted before the strip 2 is folded to its nal position. Alternatively, a journal I8 may be formed by a staking operation, as shown in Figure 7.
Having fully described my invention, it is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the details herein set forth, but my invention is of the full scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
