My invention relates to obstruction lighting- I adapted to circumscribe a chimney or stack and carrying lights which are visible both from the ground, and from the air and which are parzticularly useful in warning approaching aircraft of the presence of such stack or chimney structures.
My invention further relates to obstruction lighting structures of the type described combining the provision of a permanent lighting structure with a guard rail structure adapted to protect workmen engaged in servicing the obstruction lights carried thereby.
Another object of my invention relates further to the provision of obstruction lighting structures of the type described wherein the lights may be easily serviced.
Another object of my invention is to provide obstruction lighting structures of the type referred to incorporating therein means whereby said lights may be easily cleaned by remote control, preferably located at ground level.

Other objects of my invention and the invention itself will become increasingly apparent by reference to the following description of embodiments of my invention and to the drawings thereof, in which drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational View of the lighting structure of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view partially in section of the obstruction lighting structure of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2;
Fig. 4 is a View taken from the line 44 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a top plan View partially in section, certain portions being broken away so that other parts may be more fully illustrated, of a modification of the lighting structure of my invention as applied to a circular stack;
Fig. 6 is a view similar to that of Fig. 1 of the modification of Fig. 5; and
Fig. '7 is an enlaged view taken on the line 'l-'l of Fig. 6.
Referring now to the drawings, in all of which like parts are designated by like reference characters, at ID I have indicated generally the obstruction lighting structure of my invention, this lighting structure consisting of three light-carrybers, D. It will be obvious that, according to the size of the stack or chimney upon which such lighting structure is carried, the number of lighting structures warning of the presence of such air obstruction to aircraft and the like, may be varied and hence the number of reinforcing members may be increased. Such reinforcing members may further be eliminated, if desired.
In normal scaffold construction employed in creating a staging for work on chimneys, etc., a pair of metallic bands 3 and 4 are adapted to be telescoped about the entire circumference of the stack or chimney 5, said bands being spaced a substantial distance apart and being disposed about the entire circumference of the stack or chimney 5 at the height at which the structure is to be positioned. A preferred spacing between the bands in my invention is about 40". Each of the metallic bands 3 and 4 are preferably further, as best shown in Fig. 1, composed of a plurality of similar metal bands secured together by couplings which are bolted together wherefore the bands are tightly secured to the chimney or stack structure and the light-carrying devices, A, B and C, andithe reinforcing members D are rigidly secured thereto.
It will be noted that a plurality of U-shaped step members 3|) are disposed over the band 4, said steps being provided with downwardly extending portions 3! disposed between the bands 4 and the chimney structure, a hooked end portion 32 of each locking the step to the band and preventing the disengagement of the step therefrom.
A plurality of hand grip members 30', aligned with said step and having downwardly extending portions 3|"; ending in upwardly disposed end hook portions 32' and similarly formed to the step members 30, are disposed between the upper band 3 and the chimney 0r stack. These hand grip and step members are similar to those described and claimed in Patent No. 2,358,014 of this applicant and in my co-pending application.
The improved obstruction lighting structure of my present invention is preferably embodied in a combinedback rail and loop structure which is formed in the following manner:
A plurality of loops [0 are disposed about the work structure upon which the lamps A, B and C are carried, formed similarly to the reinforcing members D being preferably tubular and generally cylindrical in form and comprise a pair of legs ll and i2 and a yoke 13, the leg ll initiating in a hooked end portion l5 curved over the band ing mountings, A, B and C, and reinforcing mem- 3 disposed around the circumference of the chimney, a portion of said leg adjacent said curved end portion being telescoped between the said band and the chimney and a lower end portion of said leg II being telescoped between the band 4 and said chimney, the main portion of the leg being disposed substantially vertically and flush with the sides of the chimney. The yoke I3 is disposed at substantially right angles to the chimney structure and to the leg II and extends outwardly from the chimney, the leg I2 extending at right angles thereto and maintained thereby in spaced and parallel relation to the leg II. The leg I2, similarly to the leg I I, is disposed with an upper curved portion I6 which is hooked about a conduit I'I, outwardly spaced from the cylindrical stack by said loops, the said conduit forming an outer cylindrical band and guard rail structure encompassing said stack and adapted, in the forms of my invention shown herein, to be disposed beneath the cross members 24 supporting the light fixtures A, B and C. Said lights receive current through a cable 50 carried by the conduit I disposed about the cylindrical band 4 and the cable 50 is telescoped within the tubular yoke I3 and the tubular leg I2, passing through the mounting 24 to the lamp connections.
An air conduit 60, which is also disposed adjacent the ladder passes through the yoke I3 and leg I2, travels across the support 24 and branches off into a pair of narrow tubes preferably of copper, a pair of each of these being placed about each of the lamps and spaced therefrom and being bowed in the manner shown in my aforementioned patent and application. The air conduit proceeds from the lamp structure A to structures B and C through the conduit I! to clean the lamps thereat.
The reinforcing members D are similarly formed to the lamp carrying loop structures I0 and are disposed about the circumference of the chimney or stack at spaced intervals, the hooked end portions thereof being secured respectively to the band 3 and'the conduit I'I. These loop portions and reinforcing members further serve as staging and back rail members since they maintain the conduit III in spaced relation from the chimney and in the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the step members and a hinged step adjacent the ladder 60 and lamp structure A may be utilized as a platform upon which the workmen may work about the chimney to repair or replace the lamps. It will be noted that the step 40 hereinbefore referred to is hinged, as at 39, to the leg II and rests upon a step member 38 formed in the manner of the step members 30 when said step 40 is in its downward or operative position. Said platform step 40 is preferably grilled as best shown in Fig. 2 and has a pair of diagonal downwardly extending members 42 journaled about the yoke I3 which act as additional reinforcing members to carry the weight of said grilled step when in its operative position. A catch 44 which is secured to an upper portion of the leg II is adapted to lock the step 40 in an inoperative position in order that the workmen may ascend the chimney without interference.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, in lieu of the steps 30, triangular brackets I00 support U-shaped loops IOI similar in form to those shown at I2 and having a pair of oppositely disposed parallel leg portions I02 and I03 and a yoke portion I04 which is provided with a plurality of grooves I05 through which rods I06 are adapted to pass, said rods being circular in cross section and forming a continuous platform together with the grilled step 40 for the workmen to pass around the chimney and from one set of obstruction lighting fixtures to the other.
At the ends of said rods adjacent the grilled step, the rods are supported by the bracket and platform supporting horizontally disposed portion is disposed extending inwardy from the outer end of the diagonal member I01 to the upright member I08 of the bracket and said portion is provided with corrugations or grooves similar to grooves I05 provided in the web I04 and the said yoke, and the upwardly extending legs I02 and I03 are dispensed with. At these ends of the rods as well as at the loop intersecting areas, a band I09 is clamped over the rods I08 and bolted by means of bolts IIO-I I0 to the yoke portion I04 or to the horizontal portion substituted therefor in order to maintain the rods I06 within the corrugations I05 or the like.
Although, I have described my invention in connection with certain preferred embodiments thereof, I am aware that numerous and extensive departures may be made therefrom without, however, departing from the spirit of my invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Iclaim:
1. An obstruction lighting structure comprising a substantially U-shaped member, said member being secured to a cylindrical upright work sur face and having an upwardly extending leg portion, an outwardly extending yoke portion, and an upwardly extending leg portion spaced from said first mentioned leg portion, a cylindrical band adapted to be secured to said outwardly spaced leg portion adjacent an upper portion thereof, a platform associated with said cylindrical upright work surface and adapted to be disposed adjacent the yoke of said U-shaped member whereby a platform is provided for a workman, said cylindrical band acting as a guard rail to protect said workman.
2. An obstruction lighting structure comprising a substantially U-shaped member, said member being secured to a cylindrical upright work surface and having an upwardly extending leg portion, an outwardly extending yoke portion, and an upwardly extending leg portion spaced from said first mentioned leg portion, a cylindrical band adapted to be secured to said outwardly spaced leg portion adjacent an upper portion thereof, a platform associated with said cylindrical upright work surface and adapted to be disposed adjacent the yoke of said U-shaped member whereby a platform is provided for a workman, said cylindrical band acting as a guard rail to protect said workman, said platform adapted to be locked in closely adjacent contact with said cylindrical work surface when in inoperative use.

An obstruction lighting structure comprising a substantially U-shaped member, said member being secured to a cylindrical upright work surface and having an upwardly extending leg portion, and outwardly extending yoke portion, and an upwardly extending leg portion spaced from said first mentioned leg portion, a cylindrical band adapted to be secured to said outwardly spaced leg portion adjacent an upper portion thereof, a platform associated with said cylindrical upright work surface and adapted to be disposed adjacent the yoke of said U-shaped member whereby a platform is provided for a workman, said cylindrical band acting as a guard rail to protect said workman, a pair of diagonal brace members being Journalled about said yoke and serving as support members for said platform.
4. An obstruction lighting structure for a. substantially cylindrical work surface such as a chimney or the like, said work structure having a pair of cylindrical bands telescoped thereover, said bands being disposed about said cylindrical structure and in spaced relation relative to each other, a. plurality of substantially U-shaped members adapted to be telescoped between said cylindrical bands and said cylindrical work structure and rigidly secured thereto, said members each comprising a yoke portion disposed outwardly from said cylindrical work surface, each said yoke terminating in an upwardly extending leg disposed substantially parallel and in spaced relation to that portion of said member disposed adjacent the work surface, each said leg supporting lighting fixtures, a cylindrical guard rail member associated with the upper portion of each of said legs and circumscribing a substantial portion of the cylindrical work surf-ace, tread members disposed adjacent the yoke of each of said members forming a work platform for the workman.
5. An obstruction lighting structure for a substantially cylindrical work surface such as a chimney or the like, said work structure having a pair of cylindrical bands telescoped thereover, said bands being disposed about said cylindrical structure and in spaced relation relative to each other, a plurality of substantially U-shaped members adapted to be telescoped between said cylindrical bands and said cylindrical work structure and rigidly secured thereto, said members each comprising a yoke portion disposed outwardly from said cylindrical work surface, each said yoke terminating in an upwardly extending leg disposed substantially parallel and in spaced rela- 6.An obstruction lighting structure as claimed,
in claim 5, each said yoke being provided with a series of corrugations through which said platform forming members are adapted to pass.

An obstruction lighting structure as claimed in claim 6 having a plurality of bands, each band adapted to be clamped over a portion of said yoke portion and said platform forming members disposed in the corrugations of said yoke whereby said platform is rigidly secured to said U-shaped' members.
8. An obstruction lighting structure as set forth in claim 5, each said yoke portion forming a part of a triangular bracket portion.
