FIRE SQUELCHER Filed 001;. 5, 1945 Inventor farmyfialar 00d diaries [e (can,
v By 15% Patented Sept. 27, 1949 FIRE SQUELCHER Harvey Baker and Charles E. Le Cocq, Bellingham, Wash.; Elizabeth Le Cocq executrix of said Charles E. Le Cocq, deceased Application October 5, 1945, Serial N0. 620,434
1 Claim. (01. 16946) Our invention relates to fire extinguishers and has for an object to provide a fragile fire extinguishing material container having means whereby the same may be exploded to scatter the material.
Another object of the invention is to provide a brittle container for a fire extinguishing material with means whereby it may be thrown with force.
A further object of this invention is to provide a glass or other fragile container carrying an explosive cartridge and means whereby the same may be exploded to shatter the container and scatter its contents. v
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of our invention, v
Figure 2 is an elevational view thereof,
Figure 3 is an end view of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a detailed view of a trigger.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the intersecting fins forming a steering device for the invention.
In the accompanying drawings as above enumerated and in the following specification, like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout and in which l0, indicates our invention which consists of 9. preferably pear-shaped friable container ll, provided with a reduced neck l2, projecting from its enlarged or front end [3. The reduced tail end I, of the device is provided with a filler l5, through which is drilled a bore 16, aligning with similar bores I1, in the opposing walls of the member I I, whereby a cord 18, may be threaded there-through to the outer end IQ, of which cord is secured a steering device 20.
The said neck I2, is externally screw-threaded to receive the inner threaded tubular portion 2|, of a cartridge containing block 22, provided with an end bore 23, to receive a trigger member 24, the bore 23, is enlarged at its inner end as at 25, in which said enlarged bore is seated an explosive cartridge 26. The member 24, comprises a shank 21, an annular guide collar 28, and the inner end 29, of the shank terminates in a conical firing pin 30, the point 3|, of which normally seats against the cap end 32, of said cartridge. The outer end of the shank 21, is provided with an enlarged disk head 33 which is threaded to the shank 21 as shown in Figure 4.
In operation the container 1 I, being filled with a suitable flre extinguishing liquid, powder or the like, the device is operated by holding the part l8, in the hand of a user and is given one or two swings and then thrown directly at the fire to be extinguished, the steering device 20, guiding the missile straight to the point of the fire. When the disk 33, hits upon any hard substance it will drive the shank 21, in with force, causing the pin 3|, to discharge the cartridge, the concussion of which will shatter the disk 34, separating the cartridge from the material 35, in the container 1 I. The action of the explosion will be such as to completely shatter the container and spread the extinguishing material.
When the missile is in flight, the steering device 20 which is formed of a plurality of intersectingplates produces a drag. Since this guiding-device 20 is attached by means of a flexible string, cord, or the like to the rear end of the container II, the forward end of the container will be that which contains the firing pin. Hence, the leading edge or portion of the device which is the proper part of the mechanism to insure firing will be forwardmost in flight.
Changes in shape, sizeand rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
Having now described our invention that which we claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
A fire extinguishing device comprising a friable substantially pear-shaped container, a neck portion extending from said container, a cap threadingly received on said neck portion, a bore in said cap adapted to receive a firin cartridge therein, a firing pin slidably received in said cap and the extremity of said neck portion, means for directing the flight of said container, means for flexibly joining said directing means to said container, and said directing means including intersecting substantially rectangular plates.
