The latter may move freely in the barrel 5. By releasing the button 8 the barrel 5 is again forced into wedging engagement with the tip 2 of casing 3 the split end of barrel 5 gripping and holding the lead II). Obviously, the same operations are necessary to renew the lead I 0. The wall of the barrel 5 is provided with a slot 9 through which a lead I0 may pass. On the barrel 5 a tube iii is rotatably mounted, the lower end of which projects into a bore of tip 2 of casing 3 and the upper end of the tube I6 abuts on the annular bearing member I4. The wall of the tube i5 is provided with an axial slot I'I through which a lead I0 may pass. The upper end portion of the tube i6 is also provided with a helical slot 22 extending half round the tube I6. Into the slot 22 projects a stud I8 of the barrel 5. By depressing the button 8 against the action of spring I3 the stud I8 of the barrel 5 forces the tube i6 to rotate until its axial slot I'I is in registration with the slot 9 of the barrel 5 and a lead I9 may pass through both slots 9 and I'I.

To show the position of the slots 9, II an index 23 is marked on the button 8, and the side walls of the casing 3 are provided each with a mark 24, the latter being of different colors, for instance black, red, blue, green, yellow, brown or the like. Instead of marks 24 of diierent colors the marks 24 may consist of numbers which indicate diierent hardness of the leads, when uni-colored leads are being used. To facilitate the entering of the leads Il) from the chambers I5 into the barrel 5, the end faces I9 and 20 are slanting. g
In the position shown in Fig. 1 a lead I0 is in its position for use. The barrel 5 is forced home in the casing 3 by the spring I3. The slotted end of the barrel 5 is constricted to cause the pincer I I to grip the lead I0 and hold the same securely against axial displacement. To adjust the lead I0 or to remove it altogether so that another one might be inserted in the barrel 5, the pencil is turned so that its tip is uppermost, then the button 8 is pressed into theY casing 3 causing the slots 9, I'I to be brought one above the other, and the lead I0 passes through said slots into a chamber I5. By turning the button B, the slots 9, I1 are brought opposite the chamber i5 having the mark appropriated to the lead desired. A lead from the chamber I5 may fall into the barrel 5 through the slots 9, I I by suitably turning the pencil. By releasing the button 8 the tube IB is rotated automatically and closes slot 9 of the barrel 5 the stud I8 moving in slot 22 by the action of spring |3.
In the construction shown` in Fig. 4 the rotatably mounted tube 28 closing the chambers I5 and having the slot l1 to let the lead i!) pass is rigidly connected with the button 8 and with the pincer 2, for the lead IU. The tube 28 may be axially displaced against the action of spring I3 by pressing the button 8. Within the tube 28 the barrel 29 is rotatably mounted resting at 30 on the face of pincer I fastened to tube 23. The barrel 28 is provided with a groove 3| running in a screw line. Into said groove 3| projects a pin 32 forming part of an annular disk 33. The latter is rotatably arranged between a shoulder of the casing 3 and the xed abutment ring iii. The pin 32 projects through an axial slot 34 of the tube 28 into the groove 3|. By turning the button 8 the slot of the tube 28 may be brought opposite any one of the chambers l5 and by pressing the button 8 in axial direction the barrel 29 will be turned by groove 3| and pin 32.
A leadY I0 from any chamber l5 may pass into the barrel. While turning the tube 28 the ring 33 Will be turned too by the pin 32 projecting through slot 3'4 of tube 28.
' In both the examples shown in Figs. 1 and 4 the chambers I5 may be formed in a cylindrical casing 35 (Fig. 5) which is placed in an ornamental shell 3. The casing 35 may be turned with reference to the slot in the barrel by means tached to one end thereof While the other end of i the barrel is formed to constitute a' lead gripping pincer with a rearwardly tapered exterior engaging a complementary tapered bore in the adjacent end of the casing, said button extending into the other end of the casing and being axially movable and rotatable therein, coupling means Within said casing and comprising an annular bearing member with coupling teeth iixed to said casing and another annular coupling member having coupling teeth axially slidably mounted on said barrel but rotatable therewith,
