IMPROVED METALLIC BUNG.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 24,827, dated July 19, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, T. BRIGGs SMITH, of
Marietta, in the State of Ohio, have invented do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in forming the bung or stopple of metal with a screw formed on the same, to be introduced into the cask or other vessel by forming a corresponding screw therein, or by forcing it in Without the previous formation of a screw-thread.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure l is the top ofthe bung, with two holes, A A, for the wrench. Fig. 2 represents a vertical central section of the bung. Fig. 3 is a section of the bung-stave, showing the form of the bung-hole. Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of the bung.
B B represent the screw, which is made with a thin knife-like edge, with a flat or plane surface between the threads. The object of the thin thread is that it may be easily forced into the wood without a previously formed screw to receive it.
D D .is a projecting square shoulder, the object of which is to make the bung tight independent of the screw by being forced down in the recess E E, Fig. 3, in the stave.

A metallic screw-bung for casks or other wooden vessels for holding liquids, with a knife-like thread, and an elevation at any point between the threads, and a shoulder on the bung let into the stave, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
