UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TOY Ralph A. Fernald, Millinocket, Maine Application December 21, 1945, Serial No. 636,306
2 Claims. (01. 46-173) The invention relates to a toy, and more especially to mechanical figure toy.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a toy of this character, wherein its appearance simulates an animal, yet it may be of some other representation, in this instance, is that of an elephant, and the legs of which are adjustable and sustained by friction in adjusted position, the changing of the positions of the legs of the toy give entertainment to the possesser, and at the same time affording amusement, as such toy can be placed in any desired position, either standing, sitting down or in a walking posture.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a toy of this character, wherein it is constructed of few parts, these being assembled in a novel manner, and unique in the set up of the entire structure.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a toy of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in operation, strong, durable, neat and attractive in appearance, lending entertainment and attractiveness to a user thereof and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side view of the toy constructed in accordance with the invention, showing by full lines one position of the legs and by dotted lines other adjusted positions.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical transverse sectional view at the pivotal connection of the legs with the body.
Figure 3 is an exploded side view of the pivotal fitting removed and on an enlarged scale.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawing in detail; the toy constituting the present invention, comprises a body A, involving matched companion sections [0, which are arranged side-by-side in contacting relation to each other, and this body is formed with a head ll simulating in this instance that of an elephant, with the body congruous therewith.
Fitted transversely in the body A fore and aft thereof are fittings, each involving a tubular member l2 for pivotal connection of pairs of swinging legs l3, one pair being the fore legs and the other pair the hind legs of the animal. This member l2 at the transverse center thereof is provided externally with rounded outwardly projected anchoring lugs I 4, which are socketed in counter seats l5 provided within the inner faces of the sections II! when brought together.
At the outer ends of each member I 2 are but ton-like heads l6, which have center inserts l'l interfitting such ends of the member, while housed by the latter is a coiled tension spring [8, having the opposite ends thereof connected to the inserts I! by link eyes l9, so that the button heads l6 will frictionally bind against the legs [3 common thereto, to enable the legs to be held in variable adjusted positions, as best seen in Figures 1 and 2, of the drawing. To prevent the heads l6 from rotating with the legs l3, lugs 2! are provided on the inserts I! at the inner face of the head IS in opposed relation to each other, and these lugs are receivable in slots 22 in the outer ends of the members I! which are formed therein alinement with the lugs 2|.
It is preferable to have washers 20 interposed between the legs l3 and the body A of the toy, which is best shown in Figure 2 of the drawing.
What is claimed is:
1. A toy of the kind described comprising a body having companion matched sections, a tubular member mounted crosswise in the body, rounded outwardly projected anchoring lugs provided at the transverse center of said tubular member, sockets in the inner faces of said sections for receiving said lugs whereby said tubular member is anchored in said body, swingable elements arranged at opposite sides of the body and carried by the ends of the tubular member, semispherical headed elements adapted to be placed on the ends of the tubular member, tapered centrally located inserts on the inner face of said elements, said inserts adapted to enter the ends of said tubular member, a spring connected at its opposite ends to said inserts Within said tubular member whereby said headed elements provide frictional binding action on said swingable elements, opposed slots in the ends of said tubu- T 2,482,334 -11;- v 3 7:. 2. A toy defined in claim 1 wherein link eyes 5 FOREIGN PATENTS are provided on the inner face of said inserts for connecting the ends of the spring to the insert gi g ry Ap g' a d a in washer 'nt r o d between aid Demn i n Sp c g s are 1 e p Se S 194,993 Great Britain Mar.22;1923
swingable elements and said body and are positioned on said tubular member to permit swing- 10 ing of said swingable elements.
