The invention relates to a hoisting device, and more especially to device adapted for lifting or hoisting highway signs.
A primary object of the invention is the provision of means whereby a highway or other sign can be readily and easily lifted into position for visibility, without undue strain or physical labor.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which can be fitted to an upright or post, within easy reach of the operator when standing upon the ground or a foundation, so that the sign or the like can be raised or lifted to the desired elevated Position with ease and dispatch.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eificient in operation, strong, durable, readily and easily operated, conveniently applied to and removed from an upright or post and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which show the preferred and modified forms of construction of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device constructed in accordance with the invention, showing a sign in a lowered position to be hoisted thereby.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Figure 1, showing by full lines the sign in position to be raised or hoisted, while by dotted lines is shown a sign to be lifted by a change in the position of parts of the structure.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevation on an enlarged scale of the device, both in the preferred and modified positions as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevation showing the block and pulley arrangement.
Figure 5 is a top :plan view of the clamping yoke carrying the winding and unwinding winch or roller of the device.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary side elevation thereof.
Figure '7 is an elevation of the capping pulley for the post or upright.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
1 Claim. (01. 254 14 5) Referring to the drawings in detail, particularly Figures 1, 2 and 3, there is illustrated a pair of spaced uprights or posts I ILwhich are perpendicularly anchored within a foundation or the ground at the selected location of a highway sign II, the sign in this instance being of elongated or rectangular shape. A pair of hanger bails I2, provided with loop-like attaching ends I3 are positioned about the sign II. Hanger hooks I4 are detachably engaged with bails I2. The hooks I4 are loosely connected to lifting or hoisting cables I5 which are trained over the pulleys I6 of a block and tackle, each having its tackle I'I detachably engaged with a suspension eye I8 fixed to the outer end of a horizontally arranged outwardly projecting hanger arm I9. The arm I9 in each instance, is made fast to the head of an upstanding pulley frame 20 which has its base 2| secured to a capping piece 22 adapted to be telescoped over the upper end of the upright or post ID. The capping :piece 22 is made fast in capping position by a tie bolt 23 passed transversely through the upper end of the upright or post ID, as best seen in Figure 3.
The cable I5 is adapted to be wound on and unwound from a winch or roller 24, having an axle 25 journaled in the side arms 26 of a clamping yoke 21 carrying clamping heads 28 and 29, the heads being fixed within the yoke 21 at diametrically opposite points. Head 29 is fitted on an adjusting stem 30 adjustably threaded in the arm 25 next thereto and has at its outer end a turning Wheel 3|. The heads 28 and 29 fasten the yoke 21 in a horizontal position upon the upright or post I!) as best seen in Figures 5 and 6. The axle 25 has detachably fitted thereon a crank handle 32. Yoke 27 can be shifted to one side and the other of the upright or post I0 for a selected use of the hoisting device, b releasing head 29 through rotation of wheel 3|.
Pulley frame 20 has journaled therein a pulley 33 which may have trained thereover a hoisting cable 34 which can be substituted for the cable for the lifting or hoisting of the sign II as is clearly shown by dotted lines in Figure 2 of the drawings.
This cable 34 is adapted to be wound on or un Wound from the winch or roller 24 and can be attached to the sign similarly to the attachment of the cable I5 or otherwise. The roller or winch 2 4 can be held braked in any suitable manner.
Either of the cables l5 or 34 is selectively usable for the hoisting purpose in lifting the sign II or for the lowering thereof as the case may require,
and. the frame 20 may be suitably positioned as above described for the use of either cable.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided a device accomplishing all the objects of this invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment herein shownand described it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
A portable sign hoist comprising a socket adapted to be mounted on the upperend of-asig -nzpost, a pulley frame extending axially .from the upper end of the socket, a pulley mounted in the frame to rotate about a horizontal axis, an armex-tending outwardly from the upper end of the frame along :an .axis which lies perpendicular to the axis about which the pulley rotates, .an, eye depending from .the end of the arm, remote Item the pulley frame, a pulley detachably suspended from the eye, a yoke adapted to be clamped to the sign post intermediate its upper and lower ends, a winch mounted in the yoke to rotate about a horizontal axis, a flexible hoist cable coupled at one end to th winch and adapted to be trained over one or the other of said pulleys, and a sign lifting bail detachably coupled to the end of the cable remote from the winch.
