This frees or releases the key from the can cover. The projections remain attached to the can cover. The necks 3| of the projections should be of the proper thinness so that they will easily break and so that undue force will not be required to 'lift the? key handle'. -At the same time when properly made these necks Will hold the key securely in place on the can until it is needed for removal of the ing the can.

If desired one projection may be used and this may be located at either end of the slot 26 or may be disposed intermediate its-' ends. In any case it is desirable to have the projection or projections of a width substantially 4 that of the slot in order that the connection may constitute aneasily rupturable neck or necks. Furthermore, such construction permits the necks being struck out'ofthe metal usually cut away from the key to provide the slot 26.
.;Figures .7 to illustrate principal parts of a die mechanism for carrying out the steps of the method of making the key from a key blank having the loop handle 22 and the fiat shank section 23 alread formed therein. In such a method of making keys,- the depression 24 and the welding projections 27, 2.8 are simultaneously formed in the key blank. The slot 26 is then'pierced in the bottom wall ofthe depression and this leaves the welding projections in the proper location and in proper condition for the purposes'hereinbefore mentioned. i r
Formingiof the depression 24 and the initial step of forming the welding projections 21, 28 are brought about preferably in a die mechanism including a lower die block 34 (Figs. 7 and 8), which may be stationary, and a cooperating movableupper forming punch 35. The die block is formed with a flat top surface 36 for the reception of the flat section 23 of a key blank and has an elongated, narrow, slot' opening 3! of substantially .thesame length and width as the slot 26, in the key. -Adjacenti this opening twosmall' stepped-recesses4l, 42 of the 'same'size and shape as the welding projections 21, 28 are formed in theudie block. These stepped recesses are disposed at the opposite ends of the slot opening 31, as shown in Fig. 7. The bottom face'of the forming punch 35 is formed or shaped in the configuration of the depression 24.
.Hence when the'flat section 23 of akey blank is placed over the opening 3! in the die block34 and the punch 35 is moved'down, the key blank is reformed into the shape shown in Figs. 'land 8, the: depression 24 and a center part extending between and including the welding projections- 21,28 being-struck-out simultaneously. During this forming operation the downward movement of the punch iscontrolled to obtain the proper thickness of;the bottom wall 25 and the necks 3 that connect the welding projections 27, 28 to the key blank.
. After such a key forming operation, the punch 35 is withdrawn and .a piercing punch 46 (Figs. 9 and 10) is driven. through the reformed key blank to produce the slot 26. Thispunch may be used with the samedie block 34 or with another similar die block to which the reformed key blank is transferred. The piercing punch is of substan tially the same cross-sectional length and width as the slot opening 31 in the die black 34 and posit. This action also completes the formation of the welding projections 21, 28 by cutting the inside wall of each. 15'' 21, 28 withits opposite ends disposed adjacent the projections. This completes the formation of the key which is now ready to :be spot welded or otherwise secured to the can. Since the welding projections are of relatively small size with only a limited contact 'facein engagement with the can cover, the preferred procedure of welding is properlyconcentrated at the-points of contact and the welding of the key is made in a minimum of time and without loss of welding energy.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction, and arrangement of the parts and that changes maylbe made in the steps of the method described and their order of accomplishment without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of itsmaterial advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.

A tearing strip can opening key designed to be attached to a can by welding, said key comprising a shank having'a' handle at one end and an elongated depression having a relatively thin bottom wall formed in the other end, a slot in said bottom wall, and a a welding projection formed integral with jection adapted to be welded to acan and to be separatedfrom said [bottom wall when the key handle is lifted to release the key.
