Application June 30, 1948, Serial No. 36,139 claims. (ci. 229-16) This invention relates to containers composed of foldable material, such as paperboard, and particularly to containers suitable for such uses as for the packaging and sale of fruits and other foods, or for the packaging and deep-freezing of such articles.
It is a particular object of the present invention to provide a container of the class described composed of a minimum of parts which can be transported in a knocked down condition and thereafter can be quickly and conveniently erected and assembled for use with a minimum of skill, and which yet withal forms a rigid and rugged construction suitable for the use intended.
In general, my invention comprises a body com posed of a unitary blank cut and scored to deine a bottom and integral side walls, and a separate endless band adapted to embrace the side walls adjacent their upper edge portion to form a reinforcement, the side walls and the band being formed with complementary engagement means whereby the two components may be held 'lrmly interlocked.
A further object relates to the construction of the container in a manner whereby the side edges are retained in upwardly and outwardly in= clined position so that they may be internested after assembly and prior to iilling.
A further object relates to the construction oi the container whereby Ventilating openings are maintained between the adjacent side edges of the containers sidewalls.
Further objects relate to details of construction and arrangement of parts, the economies of construction and facility of assembly, as will be more apparent from the following specication and drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank employed in one form of my container.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of an endless interlocking band employed in combination with the blank of Fig. 1 for erection thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the erected container employing the components of Figs. 1 and 2, and Fig. 4 is an end elevational view thereof.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 6 of the drawings, the reference numeral I@ generally designates a blank cut and scored to define a base Ii having one opposed pair of side walls i`2|2 and another pair of opposed side walls iS-I3, all separated from each other at their side edges and integral with the vbase ii and defined therefrom and fold= able upwardly from the plane thereof on their respective score lines i-ii and |5-i5.
The blank i@ may be composed of such material as cardboard, and it may be provided with a moisture-proofing coating or impregnant such as a wax or a synthetic plastic. For the purpose of moisture resistance, the blank may be composed of laminated construction, including, for example, an intermediate ply of asphaltic material or the like well known moisture-resistant composite or laminated foldable material construction. The side Walls I2-i2 are further provided with slots i--lt medially of and par= allel to their outermost edges. Similarly, the side walls i--i are provided with slcts to deline the upwardly projecting tongues Il-Il inwardly of and adjacent and parallel to the outermost edges.
For the purpose of erecting the blank Iii into container form and for maintaining it in such position, I provide an elongated strip joined adhesively or by other means, as at i8, to form an endless band generally designated as i9 andsuitably scored as at 2i! to define four sections generally complementary tothe wall-formingv portions of the blank i9, that is, side wall portions 2i-2i and side wall portions 22-22. The sections of the band i8 are, however, each of slightly greater length than the width of the respective panels they are adapted to overlie so that when the side walls of the blank i0 are elevated and surrounded by the band I9 and engaged in operative position, the side walls of the container will extend in an upwardly and outwardly inclined position with their adjacent side edges in spaced relationship to provide ventilated openings as Aillustrated in Figs. 3 to 6.
The side walls 22-22 of the band L9 are formed with upwardly extending tongues 23-23 and are adopted to be inserted within the slots iS-M. walls of the container and also against lateral movement thereon to provide a f'lrm and com!" pact construction composed of a minimum of parts and without bulk or exterior projections forming a simple nestable construction after assembly and immediately prior to filling.
If desired, as is well known, a transparent cover of suitable flexible material may be provided to retain the contents in the .container by adhering same to the bena ls after assembly, such es by heat-sealing or otherwise. Also, for the purpose of packaging food products for the purpose of deep-freezing, my container with its contents may be positioned within suitable closure envelopes or bags, while forming therein suitably rigid holding, positioning vor packaging means. Further, if desired, I may coat all or a portion of my container, after assembly, with suitable materia] to render vit moisture-resistant or waterproof, as by coating or dipping it in wax or plastic coatings or impregnants.
` Referring to the modified form of my invention shown by Figs. 7 to 12 of E,the drawings, the ref- `erence numeral 30 generally designates a blank cut and scored to define a base 3| having side walls 32--32 and 33-33. separated from each yother at their side edges and integral with the base 3| and defined therefrom and foldable upwardly from the plane thereof on their respective scored lines 34--34 and :i5-35. , .The side walls 32-32 are further provided with slots 36-36 medially of and parallel to their outermost edges. Similarly, the walls 33-33 are provided with slots to define the upwardly projecting tongues 31-31 inwardly of and adjacent nd parallel to the outermost edges.

to form an endless band generally designated as 39 and suitably scored as at 40 to dene four sections generally complementary to the walli'orming portions of the blank 30, that is, portions 4I-4I and portions 42-42. The sections of the band 39 are, however, each of slightly greater length than the general width of the respective panels they are adapted to overlie but substantially equal to their Width at the end portions provided with the side edge tabs 44, so that when the side walls of the blank 30 are elevated nd surrounded by the band 39 and engaged in operative position, the side walls of the container will extend in an upwardly and outwardly inclined osition with their adjacent side edges in spaced relationship 5 to provide ventilated openings as illustrated in Figs. 9 to 12 but with the tabs of 'adjacent walls in abutment.

In claim as my invention: 1. A collapsible container comprising a blan of foldable material cut and scored to define a thereof, an endless band adapted to embrace said side walls in elevated position, and complementary tongue and slot means formed on said side walls and-said band for engagement with each other to hold said side walls in erected position and arranged to restrict vertical movement of the band relative to said side walls.
2. A collapsible paperboard container comprising a blank cut and scored to define a rectangular base and separated side walls integral with said base and elevatable from the plane thereof, an endless band scored to define sections complementary to and adapted to embrace said side walls adjacent their upper edges with the side walls in an upwardly and outwardly inclined position, and complementary tongue and slot means formed on said side walls and said band for engagement with each other to hold said side walls in erected position and arranged to restrict vertical movement of said band relative to said side walls.
3. A collapsible paperboard container comprising a. blank cut and scored to define a rectanguiar base and separated side walls integral with said base and elevatable from the plane thereof, and an endless band scored to dene sections complementary to and adapted to embrace said side walls adjacent to their upper edges with the side walls in an upwardly and outwardly inclined position, an opposed pair of said side walls being formed with upwardly projecting tongues adapted to receive thereunder an opposed pair of said band sections, the other opposed pair of said band sections being formed with upwardly projecting tongues adapted to be inserted within slots formed in the other opposed pair of said side walls, to hold said side walls in erected position and said band restricted against Vertical movement relative to said side walls.

A collapsible paperboard container comprising a blank cut and scored to define a rectangular base and substantially rectangular separated side walls integral with said base and elevatable from the plane thereof and having lateral projections adjacent their outer edges, and an endless band scored to define sections complementary to and adapted to embrace said side walls adjacent their upper edges with the side walls in upwardly and outwardly inclined position and their adjacent lateral projections in abutment, an opposed pair of said side walls being formed with upwardly projecting tongues adapted to receive thereunder an opposed pair of said band sections, the other opposed pair of said band sections being forxned with upwardly projecting tongues adapted to be inserted within slots formed in the other opposed pair of said sidewalls, to hold said side walls in erected position and said band restricted against vertical movement relative to said side walls.
5. A collapsible paperboard container comprising a blank cut and scored to define a rectangular base and substantially rectangular separated side walls integral with said base and elevatable from the plane thereof, and an endless band scored to define sectionsA complementary to and adapted to embrace said side walls adjacent to their upper edges, an opposed pair of said side walls being formed with upwardly projecting tongues adapted to receive thereunder an op-v posed pair o! band sections having notched edge portions for extension over said tongue whereby gagedv tongues whereby to limit lateral movement of the latter band sections relative to said latter side walls, to hold said side walls in erected upwardly and outwardly inclined position and said band restricted against vertical movement relatively to said side walls.
