Description

(N0 Model.) J. JOHNSON.
REAPING MACHINE. Y
Patented Sept. 27,1881.
mmypgnpim, wmmgkm n c Rs Pho UNITED STATES PATENT OrEIcE;
JOHN JOHNSON, OF MILTON, ONTARIO, CANADA.
REAPlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,653, dated September 27, 1881.
Application filed February 23, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, JoHNJoHNsoN, of Milton, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reapingddachines; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom panyingdrawings, which form a part ofthis specification, and in which- I u Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to devices or mechanism for adjusting from the drivers seat the elevation of the grain-table, with its adjuncts, ot' a harvester orreapin g-mach`i ne and it consists in the detailed construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth, and
Y particularly pointed outin the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the grain table or platform, xand B the tongue ofthe machine, which is attached in the usual manner to the frame, of which only a part, C, is shown. The latter is provided with aterallyprojecting lugs C C', having bearings for a vertical upright, D, firmly secured upon the grain-tableA, and strengthened by a bracket, E. To the post or upright D is pivoted a lever, F, having a pawl or catch, Gr, engaging a ratchet-segment, H, upon the upper end of post I).
One end of lever F forms a handle, I. Toits other end is attached a cord or chain, J, passing under the front end of the grain-table, at the corners or edges of which friction-pulleys K are provided, and up upon the other side, Where it is attached to a block, L, which is provided with aspindle for the outer Wheel, M, upon which it is thus supported.
The inner side of block L is provided with a dovetailed groove, N, clamping a guide-strip, O, upon the outside of the grain-table, which is therefore capable of vertical adjustment.
Upon the frame of themachine, adjoiningthe platform, is secured a bracket, P, to which is pivoted a lever, Q, having a pawl, R, engaging a ratchet-segment, S, formed upon said bracket. One end of the leverforms a handle. The other end is connected by a pivoted rod, T, with the inner side of the grain-platform, which may by this means be vertically adjusted. The handles ot' levers F and Q should be arranged Within convenient reach of the driver.
From theforegoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation land advantages of my invention Will he readily understood. By manipulating the lever Q the inner end of the grain-table is raised to any desired elevation, where it is held Yby the action of the pawl or catch. When thus raised the standard or upright D `slides vertically in its bearings. The outer end of the platform may be similarly adjusted by operating the lever F.
It will bc observed that the standard D is rigid With the platform and slides loosely in its hearings upon the main frame C, and that the other standard, P1 is fixed upon the main frame C. By this construction the inner end may be raised or lowered without affecting the tension of the rope J, and the other may be similarly treated without affecting the rod T, and both operating means are within easyr reach of the driver.
Having thus described myinvention, lI claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States- In a reaping-machine, the standard D, having segmental block H, secured to the table A, and working loosely in bearings C upon the main frame O, the lever F, pawl G, rope J, pnlleys K, and dovetailed frame L, combined with the table A, rope T, frame C, ratcheted standard P, lever Q, and pawl It, all constructed, arranged, and operated from the drivers scatto adjust the height of either end of the said table at will, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN JOHNSON. Witnesses:
D. W. CAMPBELL, J AMES ROBINSON.
