SCREW-CUTTING- DIE-STOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,581, dated September 27, 1881,
Application filed May 17, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUCIOUS H. SANDERSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York city,in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw- Outting Die-Stocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it .appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompan yingdrawin gs, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a watch-makers tool known in the trade as a screw-plate, and the object of the same is to cut or form the threads on small metallic screws used in watches and for other purposes in a watchmakers establishment.
My improvement consists, in combination with the hinged sections having screw-dies, of the novel adj usting means for increasing or decreasing the diameter of the screw-dies, whereby screw-bolts of different diameters within given sizes can be out.
My improvement further consists, in combination with the hinged section having screwdies, of the adj usting-nut engaging with screwthreads on the lower hinged section and a spring for expanding the upper hinged section with its die-section.
My improvement further consists in the combination,with the upperhingedjaw,ofthelower section having a curved spring and a steadypin for automatically expanding the upper jaw as the screw-plate is adjusted outward.
Myimprovement further consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved screwplate. Fig. 2 is aside view of the same, showin g the screw-plate stock adjusted outward and the upper section raised. Fig. 3 is a side view of the stock of the screw-plate detached from the handle, and showing the upper section thrown back. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the handle. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the spring.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A represents the stock of the screw-plate, made in two sections, 1) 0, hinged together at one end, as at c, and open at the other end. These sections are formed'with rectangular recesses, into which are suitably fitted and secured the dies d, as seen in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the drawings. The lower section, 0, of the stock is formed with the shank 0, provided or formed with screw-threadsf, as shown in Fig. 3, for the purpose hereinafter described.
The letter h (see Fig. 5) represents a curved spring, formed on its under side, near the base end, with the circularshaped fin or tongue i, and this curved spring (see Fig. 3) is attached to the screw-plate stock by fitting the circularshaped tongue '5 endwise into a correspondingshaped mortise, 7c, in the lower section, 0, and may be additionally secured by means of solder, if deemed necessary. Also, this lower section is provided with a guide and steady-pin, m, arranged between the forward end of the curved spring and the die, as seenin Fig. 3, which registers and engages with a vertical recess in the upper section of the screw-plate.
The letter B (see Fig. 4) represents the handle, constructed with a transverse opening, n, for the passage of an operating milled nut, O, and the longitudinal passage s,with a depressed portion, t, for the passage of the shank of the lower section, c, of the stock. This handle is also formed with the inclined or wedged-shaped end face,.o, for closing the upper section, 1), during the inward adjustment of the stock.
The parts constituting the tool are put together in the following manner: The shank of the screw-plate stock is passed into the longitudinal passage of the handle, the adjustingnut entered in the transverse opening in the handle, adjusted on the screw-threads of the shank, and by screwing up the nut upon the shank the inclined faces of the section will enter the wedge or tail part of the handle, and by the action thereon will. cause the upper section to come in contact with the lower section, substantially as shown in Fig. 1 of thedrawlugs.
By adjusting the screw-plate stock outward, substantially as seen in Fig. 2, the upper section of the stock is spread or forced upward automatically by the interposed curved spring, and can be regulated to cut threads upon larger size screw-bolts.
The advantages of a watch-makers or jewelers tool constructed on this principle are several, among which may be stated, first, the interchangeable dies for cutting the screwthreads; second, the adjusting means for increasing the size of the dies for cutting screwbolts of larger diameter; and,third, it a screwboltshould inadvertently be broken during the process of cutting the threads, the broken piece from the dies can be removed in a moment by opening thedies and dropping the broken piece out.
I claim the right to vary the construction of .the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the hinged screwdie sections, the lower section being formed with screw-threads f, of an adjusting means consisting of the handle B, slotted lOl'lg'ltLldlnally, and the milled nut 0, arranged within the transverse opening formed in the handle, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the hinged screwdie sections, the lower section being formed with screw-threads f, of adjusting'and expanding means consisting of the handleformed with the longitudinal slot 8, inclined face 4), and transverse opening at, adjusting-nut O, and the spreading-spring 71, substantially as described.
3. In a screw-plate, the screw-die section 0, provided with the spreadin g-sprin g h, attached thereto by the tongue i and steady-pin m, in combination with the upper hinged section formed with an aperture for the reception of 3 5
