4 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a supercharger or blower whereby gases are forced under pressure in large volume out of the blower.
An object of my invention is to provide a supercharger or blower of the disc and blade type, and in which the blades and the disc rotate on oblique axes; the disc being so mounted that it will seal against a side wall of the housing between the intake and outlet ports.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel supercharger or blower, the housing of which is formed in two similar parts; said parts being bolted together on approximately the center line of the apparatus.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel supercharger or blower of the character stated in which the two obliquely mounted shafts are journalled in adjustable bearings so that the rotating disc and blades can be held within close tolerances, relative to the surfaces with which they cooperate.
Still another object is to provide a novel supercharger or blower of the character stated, which can be used as a two-stage apparatus, if desired.
A feature of my invention resides in the smooth and contoured path for the flow of air, or other gases, moving through the blower.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my supercharger or blower.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the disc and blades in assembled position.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the blade assembly, the upper portion of which being shown in section.
Figure 4 is an end view of the blade assembly.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the housing, the upper part being broken away to show interior structure.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Figure '7 is a view similar to Figure 5, but with the lower part of the housing being broken away to show interior structure.
Figure 8 is a side elevation of the disc, this view showing the outside face thereof.
Figure 9 is an end view of the disc.
Figure 10 is a side elevation of the disc showing the inside face.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, my invention includes a housing I, this housing being formed as a segment of a sphere and consisting of two similar halves. These two halves 2 and 3 are flanged and bolted together as shown at l. A drive shaft 5 extends into the housing and is journalled in a bearing or bearings 6; this mounting is preferably adjustable longitudinally of the bearing 6, in a manner usual for roller or ball bearings so that the interior rotating parts can be carefully adjusted and with very small tolerances between the contacting surfaces.
A drive shaft I is mounted oblique to the shaft 5 and is journalled in the bearing 8, which again is preferably adjustable in the usual manner and similar to the bearing 6 for the purpose of accurately mounting the parts within the housing. The bearings 6 and 8 are preferably of the antifriction type, this being the type usually employed in adjustable bearings.
A universal joint 9 couples the shaft 5 to the shaft 1 so that both of these shafts are simultaneously rotated. A disc Ill is formed with a central hub I I; this hub being substantially semispherical. The hub is suitably mounted on the shaft 1, that is, it is fixedly attached thereto so that the shaft, the hub, and the disc will rotate together.
The disc and the hub may be formed as one integral part, although this is not absolutely necessary.
A pair of blades I2-I2 extend from a hub I3, which is spherical in shape and is adapted to fit closely within the hub II and with close tolerances. The hub I3 is suitably mounted on the shaft 5 so that the shaft, hub and blades rotate together.
The disc I0 is provided with two diametrically opposite slots I4 and I5, into which the blades I'2-I2 extend. The hub I I is provided with eggor elliptical-shaped openings l6 and I1, which extend into the slots I4 and I5, respectively. The purpose of these openings is to receive the lower part of the blades I2, and this lower blade face I8 will engage the wall of one of these openings, and will follow this ellipticalor egg-shaped path, as the disc and blades rotate.
It will be evident that during the rotation of the disc and blades, the relative position of the disc and blades will vary, and this variation in movement is the reason for the eggor ellipticalshaped cutouts I6 and I1. Since the blade follows the wall of the cutout I6 or IT, it will also act as a seal at this point. The slots I4 and I5 are so formed that the blades I2I2, fitting therein, will be sealed off by the face of the slots, that is the face of the slot might be chamfered as shown in Figure 9, due to the oblique mounting of the disc I within the housing. It will be evident that the outer and inner faces of the disc will closely follow a fiat face of the housing indicated at l9. This contacting point of the disc lies between the inlet 20 and the exhaust 2|, thus sealing the inlet from the exhaust, This arrangement is best shown in Figures 1 and 6. The exhaust and inlet combination is duplicated on the lower half of thelhousing, and on the opposite side as shown'in Figure 1.
The second exhaust 22, being shown in this figure, adjacent inlet 23 is also provided. In Figure 6 the direction of rotation of thedisc-and blades is shown by the arrow.
If it is desired to use the supercharger or blower as a two-stage device, the exhaust'from the bottom can be extended to the inlettat the top. Obviously any combination of upper and lower portage can be used. While I have mentionedithe-use of air or other gases, and for this purpose have stressed the fact that the adjacent and moving surfaces :must be closely fit, lit is :possible to use my-device with liquids,.and:in-this instance there can be a substantially'metal tormetal contact between the various adjacent surfaces.
