CUFF-BOX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,441, dated September 20, 1881.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC P. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cuff-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

As is well known, the cuffs that are placed upon the market are arranged in rolls, each comprising a number of cuffs, and these rolls are fitted into paper boxes, the area of which admits of the roll or rolls of cuffs fitting snugly therein. It is, however, somewhat troublesome to lift a roll out of the box when it is de- 5 sired to dispose of one or more pairs of cuffs from such roll, since there is no room left for the insertion of the fingers between the ends of the roll and the sides of the box, and owing to the cylindrical form of the roll, it is exceedingly difficult to grasp the same by its sides without compressing and breaking the cuffs and soiling the same, since, if the cuffs are grasped otherwise than by their edges at the ends of the roll they will be exceedingly liable to become soiled, especially in warm weather, when the hands of the shop-keeper are usually moist.

It is the object of the present invention to obviate these difficulties and to such end 0 it consists in a flexible strip secured at its inner ends to the sides of the box, and arranged to drop upon the bottom of the bgx, so that the roll of cuffs can be placed thereon, the said strip having a turned-up portion'constituting 3 5 a tongue or handle, so that when it is desired to raise the roll the same fin be effected by grasping said tongue and drawing up the strip.

It further consists in a cuff-box having two or more compartments, divided by a central o partition, and a flexible strip attached at its ends to the ends of the box, and adapted to lie along the bottom of each compartment, and also to extend up and over the partition or partitions, whereby a roll of cuffs placed in either 4 5 compartment can be raised by drawing upon the center of the strip in a direction laterally from the roll, or whereby two rolls-one in each partition--can be raised simultaneously by drawing vertically upon the center of the strip,

all as more fully hereinafter described.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cuff-box provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same with the rolls of cuffs placed in the box. Fig. 3 is a side view with one side of the box removed, and illustrates the rolls elevated by means of the flexible strip.

The letter A indicates an ordinary rectangular pasteboard cuff-box, which is provided with a suitable cover, and divided into the two compartments 0 O by means of a central ver tical partition, D, that is nearlyequal in height to the sides of the box. Each compartment is capable of receiving a roll of cuffs as they are put up by the manufacturer and placed on the market.

E indicates a flexible strip of paper, cloth, or other analogous flexible material, that is secured at its ends to the inner sides of the ends of the box, near the top portion thereof. The length of this strip is such that it will extend down the said inner sides of the ends of the box, also across the bottoms of the compartments, and also up along the sides of the partition, and over the same.

F indicates the rolls of cuffs that are placed in the compartments and upon the strip lying at the bottoms thereof. Now, to raise one roll of cuffs from its compartment so that it can be readily grasped by hand, the operator will draw upon the center of the strip, which will be just above the partition, in a direction laterally from said roll of cuffs, whereby the strip will be tightened up between such point'and its point of connection with the box, thus rising from the bottom of the compartment and elevating the roll of cuffs. To raise the two rolls simultaneously the operator will grasp the strip at the same point above the partition, and by drawing upon the strip upward and 0 vertically both rolls will be raised.

It will be evident that by making this strip of heavier material the partition in the center of the box can be dispensed with, since the strip will stand up between two rolls of cuffs, 5 so as to form a tongue that will separate the same. In this instance the strip will also be grasped at its central tongue, which extends up suficiently to constitute a handle for such purpose, and then be raised as before.

It is also evident that this strip could be used in connection with a cuff-box having more than one compartment and several partitions, the strip bein gin such casefastened in any suitable manner to thel ends of the box, as before, and being adaptet to normally lie upon the bottoms of the compartments and up the sides of and across the partitions, such upwardly-extended parts constituting in each case a tongue or handle for the operator to take hold of.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination, with a cuff-box, of the flexible strip secured at its ends to the ends of the box, and arranged to lie'upon the bottom of the same, said strip being further adapted to be grasped at a central upwardly-extendin g portion thereof, and to be raised from the bottom of the box, in order to raise a roll or rolls of cuffs resting thereon, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with a cufE-box divided into two or more compartments by a partition or partitions, of a flexible strip secured to the ends of the box, and arranged to normally lie upon the bottoms of the compartments and up the sides of and over the partition, whereby, by drawing upon the central part of the strip that crosses the partition, one or both rolls of eufl's can be raised from the compartments, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
