Application March 2, 1945, Serial No. 580,559
4 Claims.
The present invention relates generally to amusement and exercising devices for children of tender age, and more specifically to an apparatus of this kind in which the structure is mounted for universal rocking movement imparted by a child contained within the device.
An important object of the present invention is to. provide a device of this character for use by children of tender age, affording them a safe place in which they may be amused and at the same time presenting the opportunity for exercise without attendant danger.
A further object of this invention is to provide a cup-like structure within which the child may be placed and having a rounded bottom to provide a rocking movement for the structure by the motions of the child, the structure also embodying means to limit the tilting movement of the structure to prevent the same from falling on its side.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise Well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other object-s and advantages reside in the details of construction as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming. part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view, and
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on a line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a substantially cup-like structure preferably made of rigid light weight material and including annular side walls 6 and a bottom I having a central annular recess 8 extending downwardly therefrom, the recess being formed with a rounded or bowl-like bottom 9 adapted to rest upon the surface of a floor or ground whereby a rocking motion will be produced by the movements of a child placed within the structure. The interior of the structure 5 may have applied thereto a suitable cushioning material (not shown) to protect the occupant.
A substantially frusto-conical guard ill has its upper edge formed integrally with or suitably connected to the lower edge of the walls 6 and surround-s the annular recess 8 with the lower 2 edge ll of the guard spaced slightly above the surface on which the bottom is resting.
During the tilting motion of the structure 5 upon its rounded bottom 9 the lower edge ll of the guard IE] will come into contact with the surface on which the structure is supported whereby to limit the tilting movement of the structure and thus prevent the falling therof upon its side.
The upper edge of the wall 6 is provided with a resilient beading l2 of rubber or other suitable material to prevent injury to the child and secured to the inner surface of the walls 6 are one or more brackets l3 of wire construction on which balls or other amusement devices M are slidably mounted.
Also, if desired, a plurality of openings [3 may be formed in the wall 6 adjacent the upper edges thereof and in which other types of toys and trinkets may be attached for the amusement of the child placed within the structure.
While I have herein illustrated and described a structure for containing the child of substantially cup-like formation, it will be apparent that the structure may be made of any other suitable shape and of any desired size.
In View of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, manner of use and advantages of the article will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description thereof is accordingly deemed unnecessary,
It is to be understood, however, even though I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, that the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described, and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A toy of the class described comprising a container including upstanding walls and a bottom, said bottom including a downwardly extending central portion having a bowl-like base adapted for rockably supporting the container upon a supporting surface, and a substantially frusto-conical guard arranged in inverted position with its upper edge connected to the lower edge of the walls of the container and with the lower edge of the guard terminating above the supporting surface whereby to limit tilting movement of the container.
2. A toy of the class described comprising a container including upstanding walls and a b0ttom, said bottom including a downwardly extending central portion having a bowl-like base adapted for rockably supporting the container upon a supporting surface, and a substantially frusto-conical guard arranged in inverted position With its upper edge connected to the lower edge of the Walls of the container and with the lower edge of the guard terminating above the supporting surface whereby to limit tilting movement of the container, and means for attaching articles of amusement to the inner Walls of the container.
3. A device of the class described including a Walled cylindrical container, a cylindrical sleeve of reduced diameter at the base of said container, a bowl-shaped bottom on said sleeve, and an inverted irusto-conical guard depending from the base of said container and surrounding said sleeve but terminating at a point above said bottom.
4. A device of the class described including a walled cylindrical container, a cylindrical sleeve of reduced diameter at the base of said con-- REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
