In systems for" releasingor dispensing a iiuid pressure medium such *as carbon dioxide stored in a container, which may beused for extinguishing-fires, inflating flotation devices and for-other purposes; it is-=customary=to provide the container with'avalve, a pun'cturable' disc or other suitablemeans for-releasing the medium from =tlie containenwhen desired, and actuating devices for efiectingoperation ofthe releasing means.

A still further object of the invention resides in the construction, arrangement, and operation of the parts of the device, whereby the foregoing objects are accomplished.
Other and further objects o'fthe invention will be obvious upon an understanding of the illustrative embodimentabout to be described, or will beindicated in theappendedplaims, and various advantages not referred to hereinwill occur to one skilled in the'art upon employment of the invention in practice.

A centrally located aperture or vertical passage I'I extends from the chamber I5 to the lower end of the casing portion II, for the purpose about to be described.
A suitable pin or rod I9 is mounted in the bore of the connecting portion In and extends through the packing gland I 6 and the passage IT. The upper end of the pin I9 is adapted to project into the casing portion II to be operated by a cam, described hereafter, and the lower end of the pin I9 is adapted to move downwardly of the body to engage and operate suitable means for effecting discharge of the pressure medium in the container. For example, the pin may engage and unseat a pilot valve member for effecting operation of a main valve or may trip a latch for releasing a spring mechanism adapted to in turn operate a cutter for piercing the closure disc on the container. These various means for eifecting release of the pressure medium are well known in the art and need not be described in detail.
Preferably, the pin I9 is urged upwardly by a cylindrical helical spring 20 telescoped about the lower portion of the pin I9. The upper end of the spring may abut a washer 2| which bears against a flange 22 on the pin, and the lower end of the spring may be seated on an inwardly extending annular flange 24 of a sleeve member 25 which is suitably secured in the lower chamber M of the bore. The extent of upward movement of the pin may be determined by providing a Washer 26 intermediate the sleeve member 25 and the shoulder intermediate the upper and lower chambers of the bore. The washer 26 acts as a stop for the flange 22 on the pin.
The casing portion II of the body may be integral with the connecting portion, as shown, or may be suitably secured thereto. Preferably, the casing portion comprises a cylindrical casing member 39 which has an end wall 3| and is open at the other end. An annular face 32 is provided adjacent the open end for attaching a suitable cover or closure, about to be described.
The cover or closure, preferably, comprises an outlet or conduit member 34 and a cover member 35 (Figures 2 and 3). The outlet member 34 has a segmental substantially annular base or flange portion 35 adapted to be secured to the annular face 32 in any suitable manner and has a segmental cylindrical skirt or wall portion 37 disposed perpendicularly to the base or flange portion 36. A tubular conduit or nipple portion 39 extends outwardly tangentially from the wall portion 31. The conduit portion is pro-' vided with a bore or aperture 40 for passing a pull cable or flexible member 4I into the casing and the bore may be provided with suitable screw threads for attaching a pipe or conduit adapted to shield the cable.
The cover member 35 has a substantially circular cover part 42 providing an end wall for the casing member 39 and has a substantially cylindrical wall or skirt portion 44 which is provided with an outwardly extending substantially annular flange Q5. The wall portion 44 and the flange 35 have a recess or cutaway portion providing an opening for receiving the flange portion 38 and the wall portion 31 of the outlet member 3 3, so that the cover and outlet members 00- operate as complementary members to provide a 4 closure for the open end of the casing member 30. The cover member 35, preferably, is detachably secured to the annular face 32 of the casing member 3!], whereby assembly, inspection, and repair of the device is greatly facilitated as will be described hereafter.
An actuator or actuating element (Figures 2, 3 and 4) is housed in the casing for operating the pin I8 and is mounted on a rotatable shaft 47 for rotation therewith, said shaft having one end We extending outwardly through a bearing aperture M3 in the end wall 3! and having its other end Mb extending outwardly through a bearing aperture 50 in the cover member 52 of the closure.
The actuating element comprises a cam 46 and a juxtapositioned sheave, or drum or pulley 54, the cam (Figure 4) having a cam surface 5| for engaging the pin I9 and moving it downwardly in opposition to the spring 28. Adjacent the cam surface 5i, the cam is formed with a circumferentially extending side wall portion 52 for isolating the cam surface 5i from the pulley and, by engagement with the pin, for preventing the cam from being displaced laterally out of engagement with the pin.
In the present instance, the cam and pulley are integrally connected together for unitary rotation with the shaft, the pulley or sheave 54 being formed with a relatively wide circumferential recess or groove 55 for receiving therein the end section of the flexible element or pull cable 4!, extending into the casing, the section being wrapped around the sheave and having its free end removably attached thereto.
In Figures 3 and 5 improved means for attaching the cable to the pulley are illustrated. The

groove or recess 55 which, for example, ma be elongated or rectangular in shape and a restricted opening or passage 5? leading to the groove 55 of the pulley. The free end. of the cable is secured into a cable clamping member 59 (Figure 5) which ma be a rectangular or elongated block having a longitudinal bore orslot til for receiving the end of the cable and having a pair of apertures GI extending transversely through the bore Ell. This operation may be accomplished while the handle or locally operable operator 10 is locked against movement as shown in Figure 2. Likewise, the handle 70 may b operated to rotate the actuating element, while the pull-handle is latched as shown in Figure 8. Thus, either the locally stationed operator or hande 10, or the remotely stationed operator R. or pull-handle 99 may be operated independently and without coincident operation of the other operator.
If desired, and as illustrated in Figures 8 and 9, means may be provided for indicating the position of the actuator in the casing. In the present instance, the cover member 35 is formed with a window I i5, while the adjacent face of the pulley is provided with a plate H6 having green and red zones it? and H8, respectively, for observation through the window. The plate H8 is so arranged on the pulley that the green and red zones indicate the inactive and active positions of the actuator, respectively, thus, enabling an observer to b informed as to whether the fluid medium has been released from the container. While the member 35 is shown as being formed with a window and the pulley being provided with the plate, it is to be understood that the member 30 and the cam may be provided therewith, respectively. Furthermore, the zones may be provided with different colors and/or indicia if desired.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the present invention provides a simple, inexpensive, improved control device which is adapted to be operated locally and remotely. The device is simple in construction and positive in operation. The device can be readily assembled, installed, repaired and inspected and is particu larly adapted for installation in crowded quarters where the workman is handicapped by not being able to have the device in full view. The cover for the casing is arranged so that the cable can be conveniently slipped through the conduit piece and then attached to the clamping member which is readily placed into the slot in the pulley. This arrangement insures proper assembly and installation in a minimum amount of time without the aid of special tools or damage to the parts of the device. The device is rugged in construction and can readily withstand any rough usage to which it may be subjected.
As various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts herein, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and without sacrificing any of its advantages, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in any limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
This application is a continuation-in-part of our prior application filed August 30, 1941, Serial Number 409,110, now abandoned.
We claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the com bination of a substantially cylindrical casing member having an open end and an annular end face adjacent the open end, a conduit member having a segmental annular base portion secured to said face and having a segmental cylindrical Wall portion provided with a tubular conduit portion; and a cover member for said cas ing having a cylindrical wall provided with an opening for receiving said wall of said conduit member and having an annular outwardly extending flange adapted to be attached to 'said face, said flange having an opening for receiving the base portion of said conduit member.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a substantially cylindrical casing member having an open end and an annular end face adjacent the open end, a conduit member having a segmental annular base portion secured to said face, a segmental cylindrical wall portion perpendicular to said base portion and a tubular conduit portion extending tangentially with respect to said wall portion; and a cover member for said casing having a cylindrical wall provided with an opening for receiving said wall of said conduit member and having an outwardly extending annular flange adapted to be attached to said face, said flange having an opening for receiving the base portion of said conduit member.
3. In a device .of the class described, the combination of a substantially cylindrical casing member having an open end and an annular end face adjacent the open end, a conduit member having a segmental annular base portion secured to said face and having a segmental cylindrical wall portion provided with a tubular conduit portion, a cover member for said casing having a cylindrical wall provided with an opening for receiving said wall of said conduit member and having an annular outwardly extending flange adapted to be attached to said face, said flange having an opening for receiving the base portion of said conduit member, a cam rotatably mounted in said casing member, a pulley mounted for rotation with said cam and having a recess therein, a cable extending through the tubular conduit portion and about said pulley, and a clamping member attached to the end of said cable and mounted in the recess of said pulley.
l. In a device of the class described, the combination of a body having a slidable member therein and having a casing portion, a rotatable cam in said casing portion having a cam surface for operating said slidable member, a sheave mounted for rotation with said cam. a cable eX- tending about and attached to said sheave for effecting rotation thereof, a shaft rotatable with said cam and sheave carried by said casing portion and having one end thereof extending outwardly from said casing portion, a member extending radially outwardly from the outwardly extending end of said shaft, and a manually engageable lever rotatably mounted on the outwardly extending end of said shaft adjacent said radially extending member, said lever having a projection for engaging said radially extending member to effect rotation of said shaft upon rotative movement of said lever about said shaft.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a body having a slidable member therein and having a casing portion, a rotatable cam in said casing portion having a cam surface for operating said slidable member, a sheave mounted for rotation with said cam, a cable extending about and attached to said shaft for effecting rotation thereof, a shaft rotatable with said cam and sheave and carried by said casingthe outwardly extending end to provide diametri-:

14. In a device of the class described, the combination of a substantially cylindrical casing member having an open end provided with a substantially annular end face, a conduit member having a base portion secured to said end face and having a wall portion provided with a tubular conduit portion, and a cover member for said casing member having a substantially annular base portion attached to said end face and having a substantially cylindrical wall portion, said base and wall portions of said cover member being provided with recesses adapted to accommov date said conduit member.
15. A pulley casing comprising a casing member having an open end, a conduit member having a wall portion provided with a tubular conduit portion, means for attaching said conduit member to said casing member at said open end, a cover member for said casing member having a wall portion provided with a recess adapted to accommodate the wall portion of said conduit member and means for attaching said cover member to said casing member at said open end.
16. A pulley casing comprising a casing member having an open end, a conduit member having a Wall portion provided with a tubular conduit portion, means for attaching said conduit member to said casing member at said open end, a cover member for said casing member having a wall portion provided with a recess adapted to accommodate the wall portion of said conduit member, means for attaching said cover member to said casing member at said open end, a pulley mounted for rotation in said casing member and having a recess therein, a cable extending about said pulley, and a member secured to said cable and disposed in said pulley recess to attach said cable to said pulley.
17. In a device of the class described, the combination of a sheave mounted for rotation, said sheave having a groove and having an end face provided with a recess which has a restricted portion at one end thereof leading to the groove of said sheave, an elongated cable clamping member removably positioned in said recess and having a longitudinal slot therein, a pulley cable ex- 12 tending around said sheave and lying in the groove thereof and having its free end extending through the restricted end of said recess and disposed in said slot, and means attached to said clamping member for securing the free end of said cable in said slot.
18. A pulley casing comprising a casing member having an open end, a conduit member having a wall portion provided with an outlet portion, means for attaching said conduit member to said casing member at said open end, a cover member for said casing member having a wall portion provided with a recess adapted to accommodate the wall portion of said conduit member and means for attaching said cover member to said casing member at said open end.
19. A pulley casing comprising a casing member having an open end, a conduit member having a Wall portion provided with an outlet portion; means for attaching said conduit member to said casingmember at said open end, a cover member for said casing member having a wall portion provided with a recess adapted to accommodate the Wall portion of said conduit member, means for attaching said cover member to said casing member at said open end, a pulley mounted for rotation in said casing member, and a cable member extending about said pulley and through said outlet portion, said cable member being secured to said pulley.
