R. S. TRIMMER RETRACTABLE GOLF BAG CART Filed Dec. 23, 1947 IN V EN TOR.

Patented May 17, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RETRACTABLE GOLF BAG CART Russell S. Trimmer, Compton, Calif.
Application December 23, 1947, Serial No. 793,482
3 Claims. (Cl. 280-42) This invention relates to a retractable golf bag cart wherein a golf bag may be transported by a player while traversing the golf course.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel retractable golf bag cart which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and which can be quickly and easily retracted or extended as desired by the user.
Still another object is to provide a novel retractable golf bag cart of the character stated, in which the wheels are retracted or extended in a novel manner, and in which the wheels are usable in both retracted and extended position.
A feature of my invention resides in the novel manner in which the movable wheel arms are bent, and particularly the angle of these bends,
so that the wheels will track properly in both extended and retracted position,
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description, and the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my novel golf bag cart.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary front View of the center post.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view of one of the spring detents.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view of the center post showing the bottom foot.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral I indicates a center post which is preferably tubular in construction. A foot 2 is fixedly mounted on the lower end of the post I, preferably by welding or other suitable method, The golf bag (not shown) rests on the foot 2, all of which will be readily understood. A hook 3 extends from a sleeve 4, which encircles the post I. The sleeve 4 is adjustable on the post so that the hook 3 can be raised or lowered as desired to engage the top edge of the golf bag. An extensible handle 5 is mounted on the upper end of the center post I and this handle is rotatable in the post and is held in position by means of a sprin detent of the type shown in Figure 4. The detailed construction of the spring detent is usual and well known, and this detailed construction forms no part of this invention. An extension rod 6 extends into the handle 5, and can be moved in or out as desired to accommodate the wishes of the user.
A yoke 1, also of tubular construction, is fixedly attached to the center post I, preferably by welding or a suitable method. The yoke l is set at a slight rearward angle to the center post I, as shown in Figure 2, The purpose of this angle is to enable the wheels to be positioned to the rear of the post I as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, and this rearward position of the wheels is also their extended position, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1. A pair of wheel arms 8 and 9 are journaled in each end of the yoke 1, and these arms are formed with a reverse curve as shown in Figure 1. Wheels l0 and II are journaled on the lowerend of the arms 8 and 9, respectively. The arms 8 and 9 are held in both a retracted and extended position by a spring detent I2, and the detailed construction of this spring detent may vary, and several types of these spring detents are now usual and well-known.
The arms 8 and 9 cross each other as shown in Figure 1 when the wheels are folded inwardly or retracted. Since the arms 8 and 9 are preferably formed of a tubular material, they may be indented, as shown at I3, so that they will fit.
substantially in alignment when they are folded over each other. It will be noted that the arms 8 and 9 move the wheels l0 and II from one side of the center post I to the other when moving from retracted to extended position. It will thus be noted that the golf bag cart can be rolled on its wheels l0 and II when these wheels are in both the retracted and their extended position. Also, in retracted position the wheel arms 8 and 9 lie adjacent to the center post I, as shown in Figure 2, and in the extended position these arms and the wheels are moved rearwardly, thus enabling the user to tilt the cart and support the weight of the golf bag on the wheels, and with a minimum of the weight being carried by the hand of the user on the handle 5.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A retractable golf bag cart comprising a center post, golf bag supporting means on said post, a yoke fixedly mounted on said post, a pair of arms journaled in said yoke and rotatable therein from retracted to extended position, and a wheel mounted on each arm, each of said arms being formed with a reverse curve therein whereby the wheel is moved from one side of the post to the other when the arms rotate in the yoke and move from retracted to extended position.
2. A retractable golf bag cart comprising a center post, golf bag supportin means on said post, a handle journaled in the upper end of said post, a spring detent engaging the handle and holding the same in extended and retracted position, a yoke fixedly mounted on said post, a pair of arms journaled in said yoke, a spring detent engaging each of said arms and holding the same in extended and retracted position, a Wheel mounted on each of the arms, each of said arms being formed with a reverse curve therein, and an angular bend at the upper end of each arm whereby said arms are moved from one side of the post to the other and rearwardly of the post as the wheels are swung from retracted to extended position.
3. A retractable golf bag cart comprising a center post, afoot on the lower .end of said post on which a golf bag rests, a hook adjustably mounted on said post, said hook engaging the top of the golf bag, a yoke fixedly mounted onsaid post, a pair of arms each journaled in one end of said yoke and rotatable therein from retracted toextended position, a wheel journaled on each of the Number vREFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
