Application April 12, 1948, Serial; NIL. 2%524 7 Claims.
Our invention relates to improvements in a painters kit.
It the principal purpose of, our invention to provide. a novel container arrangement. for paint.- ers brushes whereby they may be kept in proper condition for use. It is a well known fact. that, despite. previous. attempts to provide suitable kit for use by painters, they have not come into general use. The. great majority of painters. still find it necessary to keep their brushes in. open buckets or cans. One will often see several different brushes in the same, vessel with no extra support, so the bristles get. bent and the various colors and types. of, paints. are intermingled. Such conditions lead to poorer quality of work, irritation of the painter and a great loss or time.
Our invention contemplates the. provisionof a novel painters. kit in which the, painter may keep his. brushes in. such fashion that they are in soit ready-to-use. condition tor the various kinds of work, and readily accessible. The: kit includes. a. series of compartments, sealed. ofi from each other when the. kit is closed so that accidental tip-overs will not. mix the brushes or the various. liquids used to. keep the bristles soft. When open the. kit. permits ready selection of the desired brush. Replenishment or replacement, of the contents of a. compartmentmay be accomplished without disturbing thecontents, of other compartments.
A further and more specific purpose of our invention is to provide. a novel. bar mounting by which a supporting bar for the brushes. may be releasably held in place.
The. novel features that. we consider charac, teristic of our invention are set. forth, with. nab ticularity in the. claims- The invention itself, ho r. to ether with additional objects. and advantages thereof, will best be understood from the description of. a specific. embodiment when read. in connection with. the. accompanying. drawings,. in which i Figure. 1. is. a plan. view of. the-kit with. the... cover removed;
Figure 2. is. a sectional. view taken. on the line 2- -2. of Figure-1.;
Figures- 3 and. 4. are enlarged fragmentary seotional views taken on the. line a e of. Figure. 1.;-
Eigure 5. is, a sectional. view 011. the line, 5 d of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is; a. seetional view on the line 6-4 of Figure 2..
Referring now to the drawings, our improved painters kit comprises a container l0 and. a cover ll. Both the container and the cover are divided by partitions to term a. plurality of compartments The; container has partitions; t2, t3;- and Hi;- the: cover has: matching partitions: l5. l6 and 11. We have. shown the container and cover as. made of wood, although. any suitable material may be. used for this purposes. Matching pins l8 and sockets I 9 are providedin-the ends of the container and cover respectively so as. to; insure accurate seating. of the cover on the container. In order to lock the parts. together, suitable locking devices 29 and 2| are provided at the opposite ends of the-container. The locking devices shown are ordinary window locks, whichv serve effectively for our purpose.
One. of the dimcult. problems in providing a painters kit lies in furnishing means. to. egregate the various brushes so that they may besuspended in a. liquid of the proper type to keep the bristles soft. The brushes used. for difierent types, of; coating, for example, should not be placed together. The partitions in the container and the cover seal off separate chambers when the cover is inplace. A sealing gasket 22. is provided; on the. lower rim of thecover and on the lower edges of. the several partitions l5, l6: and ti; This gasket engagesv the top surface of the container and the surfaces of the partitions l2, l3 and M. It is. not possible, therefore, for the liquids in the different compartments: to mingle with each other, even though the kit is turned over: by accident.
In order to make it. possible to keep. the; container in workable condition, in spite of the tend ency of the paint: from the brushes to build up inthe. various compartments, We. provide separate vessels. such as 23, 2.4, 25., 2B, 21- and- 28 in the several; compartments, These vessels 6X- tend-to the top or the container so. that. their top edges will be engaged by the. gasket 22 to seal oh the: vessels. at this pointand prevent paint. from getting between the vessel and the container wall. Preferably, the. vessels are, made. of a somewhat. flexible. material, to which the paint has littleadherenca. Various materials may be used,
. including rubber and; the various. synthetic. rub.-
bers.. The. vinyl resin plastic materials. are particularly useful in this. type of vessel, since. they are somewhat flexible and, resilient and are not attacked by the paint or the oils. therein. The vessels such as 231-28 are. so constructed; that they may. be removed from the kit individually forcleaning and replacement. In order to make this possible we provide in the partitions-and end watls or the container shall-ow recesses: 29 that extend down from the top: edges a short dis- Ihe vessels are provided with ears. 30,
formed by thickening the material at the proper place, the ears being positioned in the recesses 29 when the vessels are in place. These ears serve as a means of pushing in the sides of the vessels so that they may be grasped to pull the vessel out of the container.
The ears 30 serve an additional purpose in providing mountings for brush suspending rods 3|. Each of the ears is provided with a pocket 32 into which one end of the rod may extend. By spreading the ears, as illustrated in Figure 4, the rods 3| may be inserted or removed. Once in place, they will be held without difiiculty. Preferably, the several brushes 33 are provided with holes in the handles to receive the rods. When a brush is to be inserted in the particular vessel, the rod can be lifted out to thread the brushes on the rod, after which the rod can be put in place again.
The vessels may be made in more than one section, as shown in the two middle compartments. In such case it is desirable to seal the two top edges of the vessels, where they are not under the partitions, to prevent leakage between them. A narrow tape strip over the edges is sufficient.
We provide a small drawer 3a in the cover for storing extra rods 33 to replace any that may be lost. The drawer is housed in a small pan 35 that extends from the partition it to the end wall and seals off the drawer from the interior of the cover.
It is believed that the nature and advantages of our invention will be apparent from the foregoing description.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
