' FOLDING COUNTER SEAT.
No. 246,880. Patented Sept. 6,1881.-
WITNESSES: v INVENTOR: fl fi ATTORNEYS.
N, P275515v PlIuXn-Ldhogmphcr. Washington. 0 c4 Unrren rates REUBEN J. SPALDING, OF ROSITA, COLORADO.
FOLDING COUNTER-SEAT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 246,830, dated September 6, 1881.
Application filed May 10, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN J. SPALDING, of Rosita, Custer count-y, Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Folding Counter- Seat, of which the followingis a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved pivoted counter-seat, which is raised up against the counter or wall automatically as soon as the occupant leaves it.
The invention consists in a seat pivoted to the side of a counter or Wall, and having a single or forked leg pivoted to its under side, the end of this leg sliding in a grooved vertical guide ot' the counter and being attached to a spring, the upper end of which is attached to the counter above the seat, so that this seat will be raised against the side of the counter or wall as soon as the occupant leaves the seat.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the counter, showing the seat raised. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line 00 00, showing the seat lowered.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The seat A, which may be plain or upholstered and of any desired construction, is provided at its straight inner edge with the pivots B B, fitting in sockets O 0, attached to the side of a counter or to a wall or any other suitable upright. A single or forked leg, G, is pivoted to the under side of this seat A, and the lower end of this leg slides in a grooved guide, E, attached to the counter, or the end of the leg is grooved and slides on a projecting guide.
A spring, F, of rubber or of coiled wire, is attached to thelower end of the leg G, and the other end of this spring is fastened to the sides of the counter above the pivot of the seat, as shown in Fig. 2.
A catch, H, is fastened to the counter D or Wall in such a manner that it will hold the seat when it is raised, and the seat is provided on the under side with a loop or handle, J, for lowering it.
The spring F draws the lowerend of the leg G upward and holds the seat A against the counter D, as shown in Fig. 1. If a person Wishes to occupy the seat the same is drawn down by means of the handle J, the end of the leg Gr sliding in the guide-groove E and the spring F being extended. As long as the seat is occupied the saineis held down by the weight of the person, but as soon as the occupant leaves the seat the spring F draws the same up against the counter.
Having thus described 1nyinvention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I. In a foldingcounter-seat,the combination, with the pivoted seat A, of the leg Gr, pivoted thereto, and of the spring F, attached to the end of the leg Gr and to the counter D, sub stantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth,
2. Inafoldingcounter-seat,thecombination, with the pivoted seat A, of the leg G, pivoted to the under side of the seat A, of the guide E, attached to the counter D, and of the spring F, attached to the end of the leg G and to the counter D, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
