Anthony/7.6 i Zdove Patented Apr. 12, 1949 APPARATUS FOR APPLYING COLORED FILM TO FINGERNAILS Anthony M. Gildone, Cleveland, Ohio Application May 29, 1945, Serial No. 596,541
7 Claims.
This invention relates to cosmetic devices, and
vide a device which facilitates rapid and easy application of a colored film to the fingernail.
Another object is to provide a small, compact device of this type which may be easily carried in a purse or pocket and which may be quickly and easily refilled with a new roll of material of any desired color or shade.
These and other objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following description and claims, together with the accompanying drawing, in which the same parts are referred to and indicated by the same reference characters and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing its manner of use and application;
Figure 2 is a top or plan view of the device with a portion thereof in its extended position;
Figure 3 is a front end View of the device;
Figure 4 is a top or plan view of the device, with the projector member thereof in its rearward or closed position;
Figure 5 is a vertical cross-sectional view of the device, taken along the line and in the direction of the arrows 55 of the Figure 2;
Figure 6 is a vertical cross-sectional View of the device, taken along the line and in the direction of the arrows 6-6 of the Figure 2;
Figure 7 is a vertical cross-sectional View of the device, taken along the line and in the direction of the arrows 1-1 of the Figure 4; and
Figure 8 is an enlarged vertical cross-sectional view of the top portion of the device, particularly showing the floating projector member in its various positions.
Conductive to a clearer understanding of this invention, it should be pointed out that this device is designed to facilitate the application of a thin lacquer film on ladies fingernails. The present practice of applying such ornamentation is to brush the colored lacquer or material on the fingernail while it is in a liquid state and permit it to dry slowly thereon. This invention makes use of a thin film-like material of suitable color or shade which is obtainable in small rolls. One side of the film has an adhesive thereon capable of smoothly and evenly adhering to the fingernal by pressure. A material similar to the self -adhering cellulose acetate tape commercially known as Scotch tape, tinted to the desired color, is suitable for use with this device.
The instant invention consists primarily of two members; the container member, and the projector member. The former is indicated by the reference character l0, and the latter indicated by the reference character 20. Each of these members will be described in detail hereinafter and in the order just set forth.
The container member I0 consists of a small box-like holder made of plastic or other suitable material. It has a round or cylindrical chamber I I which receives a roll of the ornamental material or film 9. Extending horizontally in the compartment or chamber I I is a spindle I2 for mounting the roll of film 9. One of the side walls I3 of the container member is removable so that a new roll of film may be easily inserted or replaced when necessary. The front end I4 of the member I!) is rounded or made concave, as shown in the drawing. This feature facilitates the positioning of the device against the end of the finger for accurate and smooth application of the film.
The concave front end I4 also has laterally curved slot I5 near the top thereof. The top of the device It is simply a cover-like portion which has a longitudinal slot I! for receiving the hereinafter described button of the projector member 20.
The projector member consists of a small, transversely curved piece of metal on which there is mounted the finger button 2 I, This finger button 2| extends upward through the slot l1 and may be pressed downward or moved forward and backward in the slot I! by the users thumb. The forward end of the projector member 20 is referred to and indicated as the applicator 22. This member is curved to correspond with the curvature of the concave lateral slot I5 and is curved as shown, to correspond with the natural and normal curvature of the top surface of a persons fingernail. The projector member 20 is mounted on and made to ride or float on the two parallel spaced longitudinally extending springs 24. The bottom concave surface 23 of the applicator portion 22 is roughened or treated in a suitable manner to facilitate its engagement with or temporary adhesion to the film inside the container.
In use, the side wall I3 is removed from the container II and a roll of film is inserted on the spindle I2. The free end of the film is partially unwound and drawn through the concave slot I4 and cut or torn off at the end. The projector member 20 is moved rearward as far as it will go and then the button 2| is pressed so that the bottom of the applicator 22 will pick up the free end of the film. The button 2| is then allowed to rise by the force of the springs 22 and then easily pressed, smoothed and trimmed around the fingernail, as desired. The device and the film therein are then in position for the next application.
Havin thus disclosed the invention in its preferred form, it should be understood that the description and illustration thereof are suggestive only and are not to be construed in a limiting sense, as there may be other forms or modifications of the invention which may also come within the broad scope of the appended claims.
I, claim;
A device of the type described, comprising in combination, a container member including a horizontal spindle therein capable of retaining a rolled film and having a concave front end capable of engaging the end of a finger, and a proj ector-member mounted in the container member and having means for applying a portion of the said film on a fingernail.
2. A device of the type described, comprising in combination, a container member including a having a button thereon mounted in the container member and being movable in the said slot, the said container member being capable of engaging the said film when in a rearward position and of applying the same on a fingernail when in a forward position.
5. A device of the type described, comprising in combination, a container member including a film retaining means and having a lateral slot in the front end thereof, and a projector member mounted in the container member and having an applicator movable through the said lateral slot and capable of applying a portion of the said film on a fingernail.
6. A device of the type described, comprisin in combination, a container member including a horizontal spindle therein capable of retaining a rolled film and having a concave front end capable of engaging the end of a finger, the said container member having a longitudinal slot in he top thereof and a concave lateral slot in the front end thereof, and a floating projector member having a button thereon mounted in the container member and being movable in the longitudinal' slot, the said projector member having a concave applicator thereon projectable through the concave lateral'slot, the said applicator being capable of engaging the said film when in a depressed rearward position, capable of carrying a portion thereof through the lateral slot and of horizontal spindle therein capable of retaining a rolled film andhaving a concave front end capable of engagin the end of a finger, and a projector member including a concave applicator capable of engaging the said film and applying the same on a fingernail.
3. A device of the type described, comprising in combination, a container member including means for retaining a film therein and having a slot in the top thereof, and a floating projector member having a button thereon mounted in the container member and being movable in the said slot, the said projector member when depressed being capable of engaging the said fihn, the said projector member also having means thereon for pressin a portion of the said film on a fingernail.
4. A device of the type described, comprising in combination, a container member including means for retaining a film therein and having a slot in the top thereof, and a projector member applying the same on a fingernail when in the forward or projected position.
7. A device of the type described, comprising in combination, a container member including a horizontal spindle therein capable of retaining a rolled film and having an .end portion capable of engaging the end of a finger, and a projector member mounted in the container member and having means for applying a portion of the said film on. a fingernail.
