3 Claims.
My invention relates to devices for securing two or more parts together under tension, and it particularly has for its objects:
1. To provide a fastener which can be used to hold two or more fiat articles together.
2. To provide such a fastener as can be tightened from time to time so as always to ensure a good and reliable means to hold two parts together, which parts due to shrinkage tend to loosen up.
3. To provide a fastener whose parts can be made of sheet metal and by a punch press process.
4. To provide a fastener which can be installed or removed in difficult or confined spaces.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part will appear later.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all of which will first be fully described and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a view partly in section showing one application of my invention.

Fig. 4 is an elevation of the retainer used in the embodiment of my invention shown in Figs. 1 et seq.

Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the T-bolt used in the same.
Fig. 7 is a plan View of the retainer blank before bending to shape.
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the T-bolt before bending to shape and after the threads have been stamped thereon.
Fig. 9 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing a modification later specifically referred to.
In the drawings in which like numerals of referenee indicate like parts in all the figures, I represents a portion of the body of an automobile, 2 the fender and 24 the usual anti-friction strip and bead.
In using my invention to secure fenders to the body, the body and fender are drilled to provide holes 4 and 5. A retainer 6 is provided which is stamped from sheet metal (Fig. '7), slits 9, [0, ll being made in the blank so that a stem 8 and a tab 1 are formed. The stem and tab are bent on the respective dot and dash lines I2, l3 in opposite directions', and the stem stamped to semicylindrical form (Fig. 5).
A T-bolt is formed from a blank (as shown in Figs. 6 and 8) by which is provided a head M, a neck l5 and a threaded semi-cylindrical stem Hi.
In use, the stem I6 is passed down through the aligned holes 4, the plate 6 is laid up against the under side of the fender with tab 1 projected up through the holes 5, and a nut I1 is placed over the stems and drawn up tight.
If the structure is such that the T-bolt cannot be passed through the holes 4 due to lack of space, then additional slots 5 merging with the holes 4 are provided and the T-bolt is passed up head-first and turned as indicated in Fig. 9. Tab I then projects through the cross slots 5*.
For new work the fenders may have the discs 6 welded thereto, or the stem 8 may be stamped directly from the fender itself.
Other changes will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
This application is a division of my application Serial No. 772,845, filed September 8, 1947.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction and advantages of my invention will be clear to those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
What I claim is:
1. Means for securing two fiat members together in parallel, said two members having a stem-passing hole; said means comprising a retainer for engaging one face of one of said two fiat members and having a semi-cylindrical smooth stem, a T-bolt comprising a head for engaging the opposite face of the other of said two fiat members and including a semi-cylindrical threaded stem complementary to the stem of the retainer and constructed to pass through said stem-passage, and a nut on and embracing said stems in threaded engagement with said threaded stem for drawing the retainer and the two flat members tightly together.
2. Means for securing two fiat members together in parallel, said two members having a stem-passing hole; said means comprising a retainer for engaging one face of one of said two fiat members and having a semi-cylindrical smooth stem, a T-bolt comprising a head for engaging the opposite face of the other of said two flat members and including a semi-cylindrical threaded stem complementary to the stem of the retainer and constructed to pass through said stem-passage, and a nut on and embracing said stems in threaded engagement with said threaded stem for drawing the retainer and the two flat members tightly together. said fiat members having a second hole and said retainer having a tongue to enter said second hole to prevent swiveliing, of said retainer and T-bolt on their combined axis.
3. Means for securing two flat members together in parallel, said two members having a stem-passing hole; said means comprising a retainer for engaging, one face of one "of said two flat members and having a semi-cylindrical smooth stem, a T-bolt comprising a head for engaging the opposite face of the other of said two flat members and including a semi-cylindri-w cal threaded stem complementary to the stem of l No references cited.
