s. TRACHTENBERG Patented Mar. 8, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HORSESHOE RING BOX Samuel Trachtenberg, Cleveland, Ohio Application October 11, 1945, Serial No. 621,684
Claims. 1
This invention relates to jewelry boxes and more particularly to a jewelry box designed in the shape of a horseshoe for holding a ring or like article.
An object of this invention is to provide a ring holder or box which will support a ring in an inclined position which includes a pair of horseshoe members which are hingedly secured together and are adapted to be disposed in overlapping relation when the device is closed.
A further object of this invention is to provide a jewelry box of the kind which can be made attractively and which can be constructed out of various kinds of material such as metal, plastic or the like.
With the foregoing objects in view, and others which may hereinafter more fully appear the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein are shown embodiments of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention, as claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a jewelry box constructed according to an embodiment of this invention;
Figure 2 is a plan View of the box partly broken away in open position;
Figure 3 is a detailed side elevation of the box in closed position;
Figure 4 is a vertical section taken through the box in open position.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral I 0 designates generally the base or bottom portion of a jewelry box constructed according to an embodiment of this invention which includes a horseshoe or substantially U-shaped body H having disposed inwardly from the heel caulks l3 thereof in spaced relation to said caulks along the sides or legs of the horse-shoe shaped body and extending transversely and bridging the space between said sides, a box generally designated as l2. The front of the box [2 extends transversely between the sides at a point about midway or otherwise between the heel caulks I3 and to caulk l3. The box l2 includes a bottom wall l4 and a front wall IS. The side walls of the box I2 are formed by the arcuate inner side I6 of the horseshoe-shaped body II.
A resilient cushion member I1 is disposed within the box or container l2 and is covered by means of a fabric covering [8 which may be formed of plush or like fabric material. The cushion l i is formed with a transverse intermediate ring seat or slot 19 extending'inwardly from the upper side thereof and inclined to the vertical or rearwardly from the front to the rear so as to hold a ring 20 seated therein at an inclination to the vertical.
The seat or slot I9 is also covered with the covering material i8 which extends over the cushion and has a separate or integral pocket extending into the seat or slot and the slot 19 is of a width and length such that the ring 28 will be frictionally held therein. The front wall l5 of the container I2 is formed with a horizom tally disposed bead 2| between the top and bottom thereof, such as intermediately of its height, which on the inner side of the Wall l5, forms a horizontal recess or seat 22 within which the covering [8 and a portion of the cushion member I! is adapted to extend in the form of a rib or bead so as to frictionally hold the cushion member I1 and the covering I8 within the container. The rear wall of the container I2 is formed by the bight 23 of the lower horseshoe-shaped body A cover or lid member generally designated as 24 is hingedly secured at its bight or toe as at 25 to the bight or toe 23 of the base member ID. The cover 24 includes a horseshoe or substantially U-shaped body member 26 which is provided at the heels or ends of the open sides thereof with caulks 21. The caulks 21 are each adapted to seat on a rabbet 2B which is formed in the upper side of each heel of the lower horseshoe shaped member l i above each caulk 13 so that the two horseshoe body members, H and 24, will have the confronting or adjacent flat side thereof in contact relation and the sides and ends in alignment when the cover 24 is closed.
The horseshoe shaped body member or lid 24 includes a right angular or inverted substantially L-shaped cover comprising a horizontal top wall 29 extending between the sides or legs of the horseshoe shaped body from the bight 30- thereof and terminating at a point rearwardly of the open ends. A downwardly extending front wall 3| is carried by or bent down from the front edge of the top wall 29 and the front wall 3| is bent rearwardly a slight degree so as to frictionally and resiliently engage, flexible or snap over the bead 2| and thereby resiliently hold the lid member 24 in closed position.
What I claim is:
1. A horseshoe ring box comprising a pair of horseshoe members disposed with the caulks at the free ends thereof lowermost, means hingedly securing said members together at the bights thereof, the lowermost of said members having a cutout in the upper side of each leg at the forward end of the latter for receiving a caulk of the other member, a substantially L-shaped receptacle-forming member carried by the lower member inwardly of the free ends thereof, the legs and bight of the lower member forming the sides and rear wall of the receptacle and an inverted L-shaped cover carried by the other member, the legs and bight of the other member forming the sides and rear wall of the cover.
2. A horseshoe ring box as set forth in claim 1 including a cushion body in said receptacle formed with an article receiving recess.
3. A horseshoe ring box as set forth in claim 1- including a cushion body in said receptacle, and an outwardly pressed detent formed in the front wall of said receptacle and within which a portion of said body engages to thereby lock said body in said receptacle.
4. A ring box comprising a pair of horseshoe shaped members disposed one upon the other in alignment with the caulks at the free ends thereof lowermost, means hingedly securing said members together at the bights thereof, the lowermost of said members having a cut out in the upper side of each leg at the forward end of the latter for receiving and seating a heel caulk of the upper member therein, a substantially right angular shaped receptacle forming member carried by the lower member inwardly of the free ends thereof, the legs and bight of the lower member forming the sides and rear wall of the receptacle and the lower wall of the receptacle extending horizontally between the legs and bight portion of the lower member at the lower edges thereof, and the front wall extending upwardly between the legs of the lower member to form the front of the receptacle, and a substantially L-shaped cover forming member carried by the upper member, the legs and bight of the upper member forming the sides and rear wall of the cover and one wall of the cover extending between the sides and bight of the upper member to form the top of the cover and the other Wall extending downwardly therefrom at the front and curved rearwardly to form a. front Wall for frictional engagement with the front Wall of the receptacle.
5. A ring box as set forth in claim 4, including a cushion member in said receptacle and an outwardly pressed detent formed in the front wall of said receptacle forming a head on the outside for frictional engagement of the depending front wall of a cover thereover and a horizontal recess at the inside within which a portion of said body seats to frictionally hold the cushion member in position.
