The invention relates to shipping packages for i'lbre board usually about one-eighth inch thick,v

forty-eight inches wide and cut in lengths up to ten feet or more depending upon its use, one surface of the board having baked enamel or similar finish in imitation of tile, wood, marble or other finish.

boards to secure sufficient space in cars, trucks or the like to lay the boards fiat, one on top of another, on the floor of the car or truck, and to be assured that the boards are delivered in perfect condition it is necessary that they be crated so that they may be set on edge to save space in the car or truck and so that the edges and surfaces of the boards are protected and the boards are prevented from bending or breaking in handling or transporting.

Various forms of packages or holders have been devised for such wall boards but they were not entirely successful either because they did not properly protect all edges of the boards or because the material making up the .crate was too expensive, or the completed package occupied too much space in the car or truck in which they were transported.

It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a simple and inexpensive crate for handling and transporting Wall boards and the like which will give complete protection to the boards and which will occupy a minimum of Space.

Another 'object is the provision of a crate comprising metal channel shape side members and wood end members attached at their ends to the adjacent ends of the channel side members, the wood en.. members having channel shape clips attached thereto for embracing the ends of the pile or bundle of wall boards.

Still another object is to provide a crate of this character in which the metal channel shape side members have ears at their ends which are bent over the ends of the wood end members and attached thereto as by nails.

A further object is the provision of a crate f .the character referred to in which the metal 2 channel shape side members have portions of their outer corners cut away at spaced intervals to accommodate metal bands or straps and protect the same against abrasion.

The above objects, together `with others which will be apparent from the drawing and following description or which may be later referred to, may

be attained by constructing the improved crate in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which;

Wall boards are usually packed for handling and transportation in bundles made up of a number of boards or sheets Ill laid one upon another with their edges in common planes, as shown in the drawing, forming a pile or package indicated generally by the numeral I I.

Over each side edge of the pile of sheets is placed a metal, channel shape side member I2 having ears or tongues I3 and I4 formed as extensions of the base I5 and ilanges I6 of the channel member.

The wood end members I'I are located against the end edges of the pile of boards, or sheets, and the channel shape clips I8, which are attached to the inner faces of the end members as by nails I9, are engaged over the end edges of the pile of sheets.

The ears, or tongues I4, upon the ends of the flanges I6 of the channel side members, are bent over at right angles so as to lie over the end por tions of the wood end members II, and the ears, or tongues I3, upon the base portion I5 of the channel members, are folded over the ears I4 and against the outer sides of the end members I1 to which they are attached as by vnails 20, which may be driven through apertures 2I formed in the ears I3 for such purpose.

The channel members I2 are also further connected to the wood end members I1 by nails 22, which may be driven through apertures 23 formed in the end portions of the channel ilan'ges I6 for the purpose. Thus a rigid .crate vis provided in which the side and end members are securely attached together at all ltour corners of the crate.

v With such a crate, wall boards or sheets, especially of shorter lengths are securely packaged and entirely protected from damage to their edges or from bending or breaking. However, if desired, conventional metal bands or straps 24 may be located transversely around the package, especially where long sheets or boards are pack'- aged, these metal bands or straps having their ends connected by the usual seals 25, or other conventional fastening means.

For the purpose of protecting these metal bands 'I or straps 24 at the points where they are located around the` corners of the channel side members I2, the outer corner portions of these channel members may be recessed as shown at 26.

This protects the metal straps or bands against abrasion at these points, when the crate is tilted up, upon one side edge and dragged upon a cement floor, pavement, or the like, as it is custom ary in so doing to tilt the crate slightly so that the corner portion of the lower edge theref contacts the floor or pavement.

In cases where it may be considered necessary to reinforce or vstrengthen the metal channel shape side member I2, beads or corrugations 21 may be formed upon the outer surface of the base portion I5 of each channel member, as shown From the above it will Ibe obvious that a simple, inexpensive and` easily constructed crate is provided which completely protects the side and end edges of the wall boards or sheets and prevents their being bent or broken in handling or transporting.

I claim:

l. A package of substantially fiat sheets of wall boards of similar size and shape, comprising a plurality of such sheets placed in face-to-face relation with corresponding edges in substantial alignment to form a stack, and means for securing said sheets in such aligned relation to form such package, said means comprising metal channel shape side members embracing the side edges 'ofthe stack of sheets, ears upon the ends of the base and ilanges of the channel shape side members, wood end members located against the ends of the stack, the ends of the wood endmembers over and beyond the ears on the ilanges, and

nails attaching the ears on the base portions to the wood end members beyond said ears cn the danses.

2. A package of substantially ilat sheets of wall boards of similar size and shape, comprising a plurality of such sheets placed in face-to-face relation with corresponding edges in substantial alignment to form a stack, and means for securing said sheets in such aligned relation to form such package, said means comprising metal channel shape side .members embracing the side edges of the stack of sheets, ears upon the ends of the base and flanges of the channel shape side members, wood end members located against the ends of the stack, channel clips attached to the inner sides of the end members and embracing the ends of the stack, the ends of the wood end members being received within the end portions of the channel side members, nails attaching the side and end members together at their adjacent ends, the ears on the iianges of the channel side members being folded over the end portions REFERENCES crrED Y The following references are of record in the ille of this patent:
