UNITED STATES HAIR-TREATING COMB Mario G. Usai, East Paterson. N. J. Application October 4, 1946, Serial No. 701,107
' "1 Claims. (01. 132-12) use the implement so'that during the combing.
the hair will be colored.- For these purposes the comb is formed with a longitudinal cylindrical bore, and in andfitting this bore'is a device for dispensing color to the hair, the same being rotative in and around the axis of the bore into and out of the position in which the color will be so dispensed. So much, generally stated, is known, as by the Ensor Patent No. 924,048, in which case the back of the comb is formed with ports leading from said bore to the spaces between the teeth and said device includes a cylinder fitting and rotative in the bore and containing a liquidabsorbent material and itself having ports adapted to deliver the liquid to the first-named ports when the cylinder is in a given rotative position. In this case the coloring substance must be a liquid which will more or less freely drain through the ports to reach the hair being'combed, thus rendering the device untidy and likely to color the users hands. According to my inventionthe construction is such that in the combing operation the hair directly contacts the color-dispensing medium, which means that the same may be a solid (acting to impart color after the manner of graphite, for instance) or a fibrous mass charged with liquid but not of the free-flowing type.
In the drawing,
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 illustrate one form of the improved implement,
Fig. 1 showing the comb and the rotary device each partly broken away at'intervals and each partly in side elevation and partly in section;
Fig. 2 being a sectional View on line 2-2, Fig. 1;
and
I Fig. 3 being a right-hand end elevation of the implement;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view of a modified form of the cylinder of said device before parts thereof are deformed to providebearings;
Fig. 5 shows the latter device partly in elevation and partly in section on line 55 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a section of the implement including such device and on line 66 of Fig. 5;
Fig. 7 is a plan view of a color-dispensing medium that may be used with the cylinder of Fig. 5;
and
Fig. 8 is a perspective view on a reduced scale of a color-dispensing medium that may be used with the cylinder of Figs, 1 to 3.
In Figs. 1 to 3 a comb is formed by an elongated back i and the row of aligned-parallel teeth 2 projecting laterally from the back with their points lying all in the same plane. The comb is formed with a longitudinal cylindrical bore 3 open at the right hand end. This bore is formed partly in the back i and partly in the teeth 2, but so that'its diameter in a plane perpendicular to the plane in which the teeth extend from the backis wholly within the latter; this bore is thus in communication with the spaces between the teeth, as at'4 in Fig. 1.
In the bore and fitting the same is a rotative cylinder 5 ,havingits right-hand end protruding and formed with a knob 6, the cylinder having a longitudinal slot i of a width less than half the diameter of the cylinder. In Figs. 1 and 2 this cylinder is shown filled with a color-dispensin medium 8, as any fibrous material charged with some dispensable non-free-flowin coloring liquid. This medium being itself generally cylindrical protrudes through slot I, and, when the device comprising it and the cylinder 5 is in the position shown, it reaches into that portion of the bore which existsformed in the teeth, whereby when the implement is used to color the hair during combing the medium 8 is exposed to direct contact with the hair strands reaching between the teeth. When the implement is to be used only for combing, said device is turned by the knob 6 to reversed position.
In place-of the color-dispensing medium 8 a stiff foil or sheet 8 coated, like any ordinary carbon paper,'on its outer surface with a dispensable coloring substance, may be rolled to a diameter to fit the cylinder snugly and be incorporated therein. Such sheet is shown in Fig. 8.
In place of the device formed by the cylinder 5 f material charged with dispensable coloring substance. Or, instead of a pair of such rollers, there may be only one, as I6, having its trunnions journaled in centering holes, as H, of the ears.
In all the forms shown the bore is interrupted by the spaces between the teeth of the comb and it is occupied by a cylindrical device in and fitting and rotative in the bore around the axis thereof, and said device has its perimeter ex posed by said spaces. Further, in a transverse zone of said device (here of a width approximating its length) opposed to said spaces, at least one segment of its perimeter is color-dispensing (as where, for example, the medium 8 in Figs. 1 to 3 is exposed by the slot 1 of cylinder 5) and another segment thereof (formed in Figs. 1 to 3 by the unslotted portion of the cylinder) is blank-by which I mean not disposed to dispense color. When the device is rotated either the color-dispensing or the blank segment will be exposed to said spaces, thus to expose the hair or shield it from the coloring substance.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is:
