Application June 8, 1946, Serial No. 675,455
2 Claims.
This invention relates to paper holding devices used in connection with printing, and more particularly to movable clips used in retaining the upper edge of labels and other small material in adjacency with the surface of a typewriter platen.
Heretofore, little or no provision has been made in the construction of typewriters to maintain the top edge of material securely adjacent the platen in order that eificient typing may be done near the edge. A paper holding clip. of the type hereinafter more fully described, will be of great assistance in typing small matter such as prescription and mailing labels and the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a means for maintaining the top edge of material for typing adjacent the platen of a typewriter in order to obtain a clear and solid impression of the type.
Another object of the invention is to provide a means for holding the top edge of material for typing, said means being slidable longitudinally of the platen to any desired position.
With the foregoing objects as paramount, the invention has further reference to certain features of accomplishment which will become apparent as the description proceeds, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a typewriter platen and clip as seen from the rear of a typewriter, to illustrate the method of application of the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view partly in section, of the paper holding clip to illustrate details of the holding edge.
Figure 3 is a view of a typewriter platen and holding clip, shown in vertical section to illustrate their mutual relationship, and
Figure .4 is a plan view, partly in section, of the paper holding clip to illustrate its construction in greater detail.
Continuing with a more detailed description of the drawings, a conventional laminated typewriter platen H] is partially encircled by a contour-conforming clip ll, made of metal, plastic or other material, having a castellated lip portion H at one end which engages the edge of paper l3 or other material for typing, maintaina substantially U-shaped cut-out, as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4, to form a lever l4 having a dimpled surface and being operable by pressing inwardly with a finger tip. Partially surrounding the lever M the clipis pressed into the form shown most clearly in Figures 2 and 3 to aid in retaining the finger tip in position while placing the clip H at a desired location upon the platen IE; Inward pressure upon the lever l4 acts upon a fulcrum point l5 formed by a transverse inward bend in the device to force the castellated lip l2 outwardly of the platen Hi to permit material for typing l3 to be placed in position between the platen l0 and the castellated lip l2. When the lever 14 is released the lip l2 bears inwardly upon the material l3 and holds it firmly adjacent the platen l0.
The entire clip ll has a total length slightly greater than one-half the circumference of the platen l0, and, being constructed of resilient material, maintains conforming adjacent relationship therewith. Movement of the clip ll longitudinally of the platen I0 is effected by pressing inwardly upon the lever M to release the lip 12 and then sliding the clip II to the desired placement. The entire clip ll may be easily removed from the platen II] when necessary.
Manifestly, the construction as shown and described is capable of some modification and such modification as may be construed to fall within the scope and meaning of the appended claims is also considered to be within the spirit and intent of the invention.
What is claimed is:
portion defined by the cut-out being effective to displace said lip portion in relation to said platen through action on the fulcrum formed by said inward bend to receive and clamp the edge of said material.
2. A paper retaining device for typewriter platens comprising a band of resilient material movable on and having a length greater than one-half the circumference of said typewriter platen, a lip portion at one end of said band, a transverse inward bend in the device adjacent the lip portion adapted to normally seat upon the platen, a substantially U-shaped cut-out having its ends substantially terminating at the inward bend, thereby weakening said band adiaoent said lip portion, the defined. by the cut out being operable to displace said lip portion through action upon the fulcrum formed by said inward bend.
