Description

' Feb. 8, 1949. F. E. EICHOLTZ 1 0 BOW DRAWING AND RELEASING DEVICE Filed April 1'7, 1944 INVENTOR. 3 FIG. 3 FRANK E. EICHOLTZ @QQW ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 8, 1949 1 12,461,042 V BOW DRAWING. AND RELEASING DEVICE-w I .Frank E. Eicholtz, San Diego, Calif., assignor to Y Warren Beckwith My invention relates to, a device to facilitate the releasing of the bow when using a bow string or arrow eitherin archery or otherwise and the objects of my invention are:
First, to provide a releasing device of this class i arrow;
Fourth, to provide a device of this class which is so shaped and arranged that it is a natural fit to the hand and requires only slight tilting of the hand in a natural Way for maximum results;
Fifth, to provide a device of this class which provides a, natural hand fitting shield for the hand and guide for positioning the arrow; and
Sixth, to provide a device of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, easy to operate, efiicient in its action and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side elevational view of my bow drawing and releasing device shown positioned in the hand of the user and showing the bow and string in relation therewith before releasing, all except the device being shown by dash lines; Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the device in position just after release and Fig. 3 is an isometric view of the device alone.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
My bow drawing and releasing device in its preferred form consists of a main portion I which is provided with a curved extended portion .2
, H l0 7 Third, to provide a device of ,this class which I protects the hands of the user of the bow and which is arranged to fit the palm of the hand at the base of the thumb, as shown best in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. It is provided with two finger receiving grooves 3 and! atits opposite end which are adapted to receive the first and second fingers of the hand of the user as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. It is provided with a side inwardly .curved portion 5 which is adapted Application April 17, 1944, Serial No: 531,355 V o1aims. (o1. 124' s5)' a; be gases by the .third are fburtfizfifigerid the hand as showniniFigs; 1 and'2 of thedrawings. It:islpr,ovided onits normally upper side with'a curved iportion iiwhich is-arrangedto substantially conform to the curve'of the thumb whenin-positionias shown in Figs. 1and2 of. the
drawings. Near the forward upper sideof :this device is an upwardly extending lug portion-l leaving an offsetportion 8, which forms aportion for engagement'of thestring S, asshownin Figs.
1 and 2 of the drawings by dash lines. This portion fl is curved from theportion 8 forwardly and downwardly slightly at 9 to provide a smooth relief surface for they string upon release. This device is also provided in its right side with a groove H) which is of proper size to receive the one side of the string receiving end of the arrow and it will be noted that it extends backwardly some distance past the string engaging offset portion 8, as-shown best in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The operation of my bow drawing and releasing device is substantially as follows: 7 7
The device is held in thehand substantially as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings with the string S resting against the string engaging portion 8 and the thumb positioned on the top portion of the string engaging end of the arrow, all as shown in Fig, 1 of the drawings. In this position the string is drawn together with the arrow springing the bow, the rear portion of the device being held downwardly in the proper position so that the string is held against the engaging portion 8 until the bow is drawn sufficiently. 'In releasing the hand with the device is shifted so that the front end is lowered and the read end raised slightly which is done slowly and gradually until the string leaves the strin engaging portion 8 and passes over the upper surface 1, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, thus clearing the support lar device with particular positions, I do not wish to'be limited tothisparticular arrangement of portions, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and ar rangement substantially asset forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V
a body member having an index finger drawing groove on its front end adapted to accommodate the index finger of a persons hand, said body portion having a stringing engaging ledge adjacent said index finger groove parallel thereto. said body portion having a hand palm engaging portion extending transversely to the engaging surface of said string engaging ledge.
2. Inabow string. drawing andreleasingdevice, a body membenhavingan index: fin fir drawhig groove on its front end adapted to accommodate the index finger of a person's hand, said body portion having a string engaging ledge adjacent" said index finger groove parallel. theretohsaidi body portion having a hand palm,engag ing por- I tiOn extending transversely to the engagingsnnface of said string engaging ledge, said body said: index; finger groove; parallel; thereto, said body portion having a hand palm engaging portion extending transversely to the engaging surface of-said string engaging ledge, said body .nrovidtd 'with an; arrow receiving groove at one end of saidledge atright angles to said ledge and said; index finger drawing groove, said arrow groove being adjacent said index finger groove provided with an arrow receiving; groove-at. one;
end of said ledge at right angles to said. ledge, and said index finger drawing groove.
3. In a bow string drawing and releasing device, a body: member having an indexfingendrawing groove on its: front end; adapted to accommodate the index finger of a persorrfs: hand; said body portion having a. string engaging ledge adjacent said? ind'ex: finger: groove parallel thereto said body: portiozr having. a hand palmengaging portion extending; transversely-to; the" engaging surface of said string: engaging ledge, said palm engaging portion having aeonvex-surraee portion extending from said: ledge-z backwardly and pro.- vided with opposed. concave third' and fourth fi'ngen engaging portions whereby: said palm eng- I Number and: permittingyam arrow engaging the string on said, ledge to be gripped between the thumb and index-finger of a persons hand.
