This invention relates to an improved sewing machine, the head of which is adapted to be tilted about an axis atright angles to the longitudinal center line of the head, to facilitate the removal and replacement of the bobbin.
The bobbin requires refilling at least five times per spool of thread, and in the conventional-sewing machine the bobbin is not at all easily accessible and can be reached usually only through a small opening in the bedplate when a slidable closure is moved out of the way. It is therefore the principal object of my invention to. provide a head tiltable with the bedplate about a transverse axis located intermediate the ends of the head at a point where the head is substantially balanced with respect to thetilting axis, whereby a woman will have no difficulty in manipulatin the same when the bobbin has to be removed,
Another important object of my invention is to provide a sewing machine in which the head has supporting means permitting tilting of the head with the bedplate about one longitudinal edge portion of the plate in the conventional manner, the bedplate being,.however, detachably connected with one of the two hinge members forming said supporting means, whereby to permit tilting of the head about the transverse axis on which the other hinge member is located.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a. plan view of a sewing machine embodying my invention, certain portions being broken away and indicated in section to better illustrate the various novel features; ,v A

The reference numeral l0 designates a portion of the sewing machine cabinet, the top of which provides the usual working surface that is. usually substantially flush with the bed or cloth-plate the bedplate and comprises the usualoverhangj z ciaims. A generally rectangular opening .l'l isprovided in the working top portion of the cabinet III, in which the bedplate 1 fits with ample clearance so as to permit tilting of .the head about the axis AB as in Fig; 3 or about the transverse axis CD as in Fig. 2. Tilting about the axis AB is common in this art and permits easily oiling the mechanism under the bedplate. Tilting about the transverse axis CD facilitatesremoval and replacement of the bobbin and in accordance with my invention, this axis is at right anglesto the longitudinal center line of the head and is locatedfladjacent the inner side of the base portion of the standard so that the head is substantially balanced with respect to this, axis and a woman operator will have no difliculty whatsoever in manipulating the head in this way. The importance of ease of operation in tilting about the transverse axis CD can be appreciated when it is realized that the bobbin has to be removed for filling at least five times per spool of, thread placed on the spindle l8.
Two hinges. l9 and have pintles 2| and 22 which are located on the axis AB and pivotally connect the fixedhinge members 23 and 24"with the swingable hinge members 25 and 26. The bedplate II has a bearing boss?! cast integral with the bottom thereof to receivea trunnion 28 provided" on the hinge member 26. A screw zilthreaded in the boss 21 projects into an annular. groove 30 in the trunnion 26 to provide a more or less permanent but detachable connection with the hinge member 26. A similar trunmm 3! is provided on the hinge member 25 which, however, hasan enlarged head portion 32 on the inner'e'nd thereof, and the bedplate II has a forked boss 33 cast integral with the bottomthereof and adapted to flt over this trunnion behind the head portion thereof for a quickly detachable connection with the hinge member 25. Alatch pin .84 is slidable in registering holes 35 provided in the two halves of the forked boss 33 as indicated in Fig. 6, to lock the. bedplate onto the trunnion 3| until such time as it may be desired to tilt the head aboutthe transverse axis CD. J A .lug 36 is castintegralwith the bottom of the bedplate in longitudinally spaced relation tothe boss 33, and has a hole 31 therein in coaxial relation to the holes 35 to provide a guide and support for the latch'pin 34 as well as an abutment for a coiled compression. spring .38,

In a sewing machine, the'combination with a support, of a substantially rectangular bedplate carrying a sewing machine head, a pair of hinges on said support in longitudinally spaced relation with respect to one longitudinal edge portion of said plate for suDpQrt thereof for tilting on a longitudinal axis substantially parallel to said edge portion, a plate supporting projection on said support under the opposite longitudinal edge portion of said plate disposed on a line substantially normal to the aforesaid axis and passing through one of said hinges for support of said plate for tilting on a transverse axis coincident with said line, means connecting said plate with the last mentionedhinge for pivotal movement of said plate relative to said hinge on said transverse axis, and means detachably connecting said plate to the other hinge. i
5. A sewing machine as setforth in Claim 4 wherein said plate supporting projection and the related hinge are located intermediate the ends of said plate so that the weight of the tiltable mass represented by the plate and head is substantially balanced with respect to said transverse axis.
6. In a sewing machine the combination with a support, of a substantially rectangular bedplate carrying a sewing machine head, a pair of hinges comprising fixed hinge members attached to said support in longitudinally spaced relation with respect to one longitudinal edge portion of said plate and swingable hinge members pivotally connected to the fixed hinge members by pintles on an axis substantially parallel to the adjacent longitudinal edge portion of said plate, a trunnion on one of said swingable hinge members substantially at right angles tothe hinge pintle having said edge portion of said plate pivotally supported thereon, a substantiall horizontal pin projection on said support adjacent the opposite side of said plate and coaxially aligned with the trunnion in its horizontal position, said plate being adapted to tilt with respect to said pin and trunnion on a transverse axis, and means detachably connecting said plate to the other swingable hinge member.

A sewing machine as set forth in claim 6 wherein said pin projection and trunnion are located on a line coincident with the transverse axis intermediate the ends of said plate so that the weight of the tiltable mass represented by the plate and head is substantially balanced with respect to said transverse axis. 4
8. A sewing machine as set forth in claim 6 including means associated with at least the last named swingable hinge member for supporting the same in a predetermined position projecting from the support when not attached to the plate, for the purpose described.
9. A sewing machine as set forth in claim 6 including spring means associated with at least the last named swingable hinge member for supporting the same in a predetermined position projecting from the support when not attached to the plate, for the purpose described.
10. In a sewing machine, the combination with a support, of a substantially rectangular bedplate carrying a sewing machine head, means hingedly connecting said bedplate to said support whereby said plate is adapted to be tilted about a longitudinal aXis relative to said support and also tilted about a transverse axis relative to said support, and a single detent means for selectively releasof said plate and for tilting of said head with the plate relative to said support about a transverse axis, and a detent device on the free longitudinal edge portion of said plate for cooperation'with .a'
keeper plate on said support for selectively'releasably locking said plate in working positionand in 2. moved inoperative position tilted on the transverse axis. 1
12. A sewing machine as set forth in claim ll wherein said detent device and keeper plate are so constructed and arranged whereby to provide an easily releasable hold for the plate in working position and a relatively positive locking action in tiltedp'o'sition, said detent device including a manually operable member for releasing the same from the locking position.
13. A sewing machine as set forth in claim 11 wherein said detent device comprises a springpressed plunger having a rounded outer end, and the keeper plate has holes provided therein of different sizes for different depths of engagement of the plunger therein in different positions'of the plate, whereby to releasably secure the plate in working position so that light pressure on the .head releases the plate, and whereby to relatively positively lock the plate in tilted position, requiring heavy pressure on the head to release the same. i 14. A sewing machine as set forth in claim 11 wherein said detent device comprises a springpressed plunger having a rounded outer end, and the keeper plate has holes provided therein of difierent sizes for difierent depths of engagement of the plunger therein in different positions of the plate, whereby to releasably secure the plate in working position so that light pressure on the head releases the plate, and whereby to relatively positively lock the plate in tilted position, requiring heavy pressure on the head to release the same, said detent device including a manually operable member for retracting the plunger.
15. In a sewing machine, the combination with a support, of a substantially rectangular bedplate carrying a sewing machine head, and means hingedly supporting said bedplate on said support for tilting of the head with the plate relative to said support about a longitudinal axis substantially parallel with one longitudinal edge portion of said plate and for tilting of said head with the plate relative to said support about a transverse axis located intermediate the ends of said plate at a point where the weight of the tiltable mass is substantially balanced with respect to said transverse axis, and a single detent means for selectively releasably locking said plate in working position and in a moved inoperative position tilted on the transverse axis.
16.
