JAMES H. OARRIOK, OF TRAER, IOW'A.
HARNESS-SADDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,079, dated August 23, 1881.
Application filed May 23, 1881. (Model) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES HARVEY GAR- RIGK, of Traer, in the county of Tania and State of Iowa, have invented certain useful Improvements in HarnessSaddles, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of myimprovement, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a part of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-sec tion of the same, taken at one of the terrets. Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the side-strap loops.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to promote security in attaching the skirts or side straps to harness-saddles.
The invention consists in constructing a harness-saddle with a pad, a yoke having its side edges turned down or flanged to form spaces (1' chambers to receive the side straps, the water-hook, the terrets, and the pad-screws for securing the pad-yoke and side straps to each other, and the metallic loops and their padscrews to strengthen the side straps in place, and to allow the saddle to bend to adjust itself to the form of the horse, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents the pad, and B the yoke, of a harness-saddle. The yoke B and pad A are secured to each other by the water-hook O, the terrets I), and the pad-screws E. The lower parts of the yoke B are widened, and the side edges, F, of the said yoke are bent downward or are flanged, as shown in Figs. 1
and 3, to form spaces or chambers to receive the skirts or side straps, G, and allow them to pass up so far that the pad-screw E and the terret D will both pass through the said skirts or side straps, and thus hold said side straps securely in place. With thisconstruction the flanges or turned-down side edges, F, of the yoke B will hold the side straps, G, from being forced out of place laterally. The side straps, G, pass through metallic loops H, the baseplates of which are riveted to the nut-piece I, secured to the pad A by sewing, rivets, or other suitable means. The side straps, G, are further secured in place by the pad-screws J, which pass through the said side straps, through the base-plates of the loops H, and into the nut-pieces I, as shown in Fig. 1. By this construction the saddles can bend between the ends of the yoke B and the loops H, and can thus adjust themselves to the shape of the horse to which the harness is applied.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In harness-saddles, the yoke B, widened atthe lower part, and provided with flanged side edges, forming chambers, in combination with the shirts G, the terret D, the screws E J, and the nut-plates I, carrying loops H, as shown and described.
JAMES HARVEY OARRIOK.
