FI RE-BASKET FOR STOVES..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,962, dated August 23, 1881.
Application filed May 25, 1881. (No model.)
Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and I o use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to fire-baskets for stoves, or detachable receptacles in which a i fire may be built in a single hole or opening of a large cookstove, so as to savefuel and avoid excessive heat in warm weather.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of myimproved fire-basket. Fig. zo 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, and
Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical sectional views illustrating modifications ot' my invention.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference. z5 In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the top of an ordinary cook-stove.
B is the usual crosspiece separating two adjoining griddle-holes, C O. Said cross-piece, which is removable, is provided in its edge A 3o with a recess, D, to furnish draft to the firebasket, as I shall now proceed to describe.
The said re-basket consists of a suitable funnel or hopper shaped receptacle, E, provided at its upper end with a flange, F, by which it may rest upon the top of the stove.
The lower end of the tire-basket is provided with a tilting grate, Gr, and a draft-tube, H, is constructed upon the outer side of the said basket to correspond with the opening or re- 4o cess D in the cross-piece B, and with a series ot' holes or openings, I, in the inner side of the lire-basket adjoining the flue or drafttube H. In operation the cold air will descend through the recess D and tiue H, pass through 4 5 the openings I upward through the fuel, and
out through an opening, J, in the side of the Iire-basketjust below the top of the stove.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings I have shown a modification of my invention by which the recess D in the cross-piece B may be dispensed with. By this modification I construct the Iirebasket with an interior lue, K, provided with a flange, L, resting upon the stove-top, so as to cause a downdraft, the products of combustion escaping, as before described, through an opening, M, in the side of the tire-basket just below the top of the stove.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings another modification of my invention is shown. In this case two baskets are used, one, N, being of such a size as to fit exactly in the stove-hole, and the other, 0, of a slightlyless diameter. The two baskets are riveted together at one edge, so that a crescent-shaped opening is formed for a downdraft. rlhe inner basket has a perforat-ed bottom, as at P, to enable the products of combustion to pass upward and out through an opening, Q, at the riveted side of the baskers and below the stove-top.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. It is simple and inexpensive, and by its employment a great saving of fuel may be effected.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with a stove having crosspiece B provided with a recess, D, of the adjustable re basket or grate E, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the forcgoin g as my own I have hereto aflxed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HENRY LOOMIS.
