J. E. SLOCKBOWER SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR SHOTGUNS Filed Feb. 5, 1946 Inventor Patented Jan. 4, 1949 UNlTED sraras PATENT OFFHCE 2,457,929 SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR. SHOTGUNS James E. Slockbower, Ramsey, N. J. Application February s, 1946, Serial No. 645,619
2 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in safety attachments for shotguns and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein described which will appreciably increase the dependability of the conventional safety catch with which such guns are usually equipped.
A further object of the invention is to provide a safety attachment which may be easily and conveniently released at the time when the trigger of the gun is being pulled. I
Another object of the invention is to provide a safety attachment which may be readily applied to or removed from the gun.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a safety attachment which is simple in construction, dependable in operation and which cannot easily become damaged.
With the above more important objects in view, and such other objects as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention, showing the same in situ on a shotgun.
Figure 2 is a central, cross-sectional view thereof, and
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of the same, taken in the plane of the line 3-3 in Figure 2.
Like characters of reference are used to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of an elongated,
open-ended, tubular housing 5, provided at one end thereof with a downwardly extending bracket 6, whereby it may be secured by means of a suitable screw 1 to the gun stock 8. Slidably positioned in that end of the housing is a plunger 9, provided at the outer end thereof with a knurled push button Ill.
Extending transversely through the remaining, that is the inner end of the plunger 9 is a pin II, the latter protruding through a longitudinally extending slot l2 formed in the underside of the housing 5.
The protruding end of the pin H engages an aperture l3 formed in the conventional safety catch M, the latter being longitudinally slidable and usually provided on the stock 8 of the shotun.
Positioned in the remaining end of the housing is a retainer I5 and a compression spring It extends between this retainer and the inner end of the plunger 9.
Having thus described the constructional details of the invention, its method of operation will now be presented.
When the invention is placed in use, the resiliency of the spring l6 will normally urge the plunger 9 outwardly from the casing 5 and hold the catch In in tlie locked position.
When the gun is in readiness for firing, it is held by the hand in the conventional manner as illustrated in the accompanying Figure 1, with the index finger l1 contacting the trigger l8. Simultaneously, the crotch formed between the index finger I! and the thumb I!) will engage the push button l0, whereby the latter and the associated plunger 9 may be pushed inwardly into the housing 5, against the resiliency of the spring I6.
The associated pin II will slide the safety catch l4 into the unlocked position, whereupon the trigger l8 may be actuated and the gun will be in readiness for firing.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to withoutdeparting from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A safety attachment for shotguns comprising, in combination, a tubular housing open at the ends thereof, a downwardly extending bracket at one end of said housing, said bracket adapted to be secured to a gun stock, a slidable plunger extending into said one end of said housing, a push button at the outer end thereof and a transversely extending pin at the inner end of said plunger, a longitudinal slot in said housing, said pin protruding through said slot and engageable with the safety catch of a gun upon which the device is mounted, a retainer in the other end of said housing, and a compression spring extending between the inner end of said plunger and said retainer and normally holding said plunger and said associated catch in the locked position.
2. In association with a shotgun having a slidable safety catch on the stock thereof, a safety attachment comprising, in combination, an open-ended, tubular housing, a downwardly extending bracket at one end of said housing, adapted to be secured to the gun stock upon which the device is mounted, a slidable plunger in said housing, a push button at the outer end thereof and a transversely extending pin at the inner end of said plunger, with said pin being associated with a longitudinally extending slot in said housing, and, adapted to be secured to the safety catch, a retainer in the other end of said housing, and a compression spring extending between said inner end of said plunger and said retainer.
