GARTER.
Ill 1 N u. PETERS. Phommm n hun Walhingwn, v. c
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM W. ANDERSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GARTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,761, dated August 16, 1881.
Application filed J rule 27, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. ANDERSON, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garters for Gentlemens Use; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same.
This invention is an improvement on that for which Letters Patent No. 220,692 were granted to me October 21, 1879, and its chief object is to obviate the use of the hook shown and described therein.
That others may fully understand my improvement, I will particularly describe it,having reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective showing my garter in use. Fig. 2 represents its several parts detached.
A is the garter-strip, of webbing or other suitable material, elastic or inelastic.
B is the fold-plate, having slots 1) c d arranged to each other as the sides of a triangle, through which the webbing A is inserted, as shown-via, first through 1) forward from the back, then backward through c, and downward through (1, so that the direction of the web is changed by a permanent smooth fold. The plate B is also provided with two slots, cf, which may be parallel with slot 0, or substantially so, and the free end g of the web is passed through the slot c from the under side (N0 model.)
outward, and thence backward through slot f, as represented, whereby it is clamped and held in position, subject, however, to easy readjustment by pulling backward or forward through said slots. The clip eis attached to the pendent end a of the web for attachment of the sock. By this means the use of the hook is avoided, and the article is not only made less expensive, but it is more agreeable to the wearer, because the hook is an additional metallic part, liable to be pressed upon and hurt the flesh, and also liable to accidental detachment. The garter is put in position by being slipped upward over the foot.
Havingdescribed myinvention, what I claim as new is-- 1. A garter composed of a web, A, and pro.- vided with a clip combined with a fold-plate, B, having slots b, 0,61, 6, audf, through which said web may be passed to form an adjustable garter with a pendent end, in the manner described.
2. A fold-plate, B, provided with slots 11 c d,-
whereby the direction of the web may be changed, and also with slots 0 and f, whereby the free end of the web may be folded back upon itself and held subject to easy adjustment.
VM. W. ANDERSON.
