Another object of the invention is to provide, in a clothes pin of the kind referred to, an elongated and straightly formed primary handle and jaw member, rectangular in cross section and longitudinally slotted clear through the upper or handle end of the member on two perpendicular planes to provide handle and lock-pin slots, the lower or jaw end of the member being left intact, a secondary and complementally formed handle and jaw member, the upper or handle end thereof being flatly and arcuately formed and passed freely into the handle slot of the primary member with its convexed margin foremost, the lower or jaw end of this secondary member being left intact for co-operation with the lower jaw end of the primary member, the two handle and jaw members being pivotally pinned together in said intermeshed relation, and a lock pin slidably mounted through the lock-pin slots of the primary member.

With the above stated objects in view, together with such other additional objects and advantages as may appear from the specification, attention is now directed to the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the pin as assembled, the jaws thereof being closed.

Figure 2 is a rear elevational view of the pin as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, the opened position of the handle and jaw members being indicated in dotted lines.

Figure 4 is a perspective view on a reduced scale, showing the pin as applied upon a clothes line for holding a garment.

The clothes pin as constructed in accordance with this invention comprises a straightly elonated, primary handle and jaw member 5, the upper end of this member constituting the handle 5a thereof and being generally rectangular in :2,Claims. A complemental secondary handle and jaw member ID is provided, the upper or handle end Illa thereof being flatly and arcuately formed as shown and dimensioned to slide freely into the handle slot 6 of the primary handle and jaw member 5 with its convexed margin foremost as shown, the lower end of this secondary member being widened to form a jaw lflb complemental with the jaw 5b of the primary member 5, and being also semi-circularly recessed as at llld in registry with the recess 5d of the member 5, for gripping the line 8, and being crossnotched as at llle in registry with the notches 56 of the member 5 for gripping the garment 9. The two working members 5 and H] as thus formed and assembled are pivotally and operatively joined by means of a pivot pin I! passed through the tabs or ears 5c of the member 5 and through the inserted lower end of the member ID, as positioned in the several figures of the drawing.

A headed lock-pin I2 is slidably mounted through the lock-pin slot 1 of the handle end 5a of the member 5, and it is to be noted that when this lock-pin is raised to the position indicated in dotted lines in Figure 3, the upper handle ends of the members 5 and I0 may then be pressed together for opening the lower jaws 5b, lflb for receiving and gripping the clothes line 8 and garment 9, and that by then pressing the lock-pin downwardly along the slots 1 of the member 5, the arcuate handle end of the complemental member I0 is forced outwardly and the jaws 5b, I 0b are pressed inwardly together upon the line B and garment 9, thus effectively securing the pin and garment to the line, against the action of wind and storm.

It is thought that the construction, use and operation of the clothes pin will be fully understood from the foregoing description, and while I have herein shown and described a preferred form of the invention, it is understood that the structural features thereof may be changed as desired, within the scope of the claims.

I claim:

1. In a clothes pin of the kind referred to, an, elongated and straightly formed primary handle and jaw member, rectangular in cross section and longitudinally slotted clear through the upper or handle end of the member on two perpendicular planes to provide handle and lock-pin slots, the lower or jaw end of the member being left intact, a secondary and complementally formed handle and jaw member, the upper or handle end thereof being flatly and arcuately formed and passed freely into the handle slot of the primary member with its convexed margin foremost, the lower or jaw end of this secondary member being left intact for co-operation with the lower jaw end of the primary member, the two handle and jaw members being pivotally pinned together in said intermeshed relation, and a, lock pin slidably mounted through the lock-pin slots of the primary member.

2. A clothes pin comprising a pair of handle and jaw members formed and pivotally joined through points spaced intermediately of the ends thereof, in such manner that the lower jaw ends of the members are opened apart by the pressing together of the upper handle ends of the members, and the lower jaw ends are pressed together by the opening apart of the upper handle ends of the members, one of the handle and jaw members being formed straightly and rectangular in cross section with the upper handle 'end thereof being slotted longitudinally through all four sides to provide at one side handle and jaw slots for a complemental handle and jaw member, and at the other side lock-pin slots, a complemental handle and jaw member having its upper handle end formed flatly and arcuately and inserted freely into the handle slots of the first named handle and jaw member with the convexed margin foremost and thus pivotally pinned together, the lower ends of both members being formed as co-operative line and clothes gripping jaws, and a lock-pin slidably mounted through the lock-pin slots of the first named straight member, whereby the upper handle ends of the handle and jaw members may be releasably held to their separated position for closing the jaws of these members together.
