o An object of the present invention is to provide a container having a tearing strip 'which is'tongueless; that is, the body wall is scoi'edso that the end of the tearing strip( to which the key isotobe applied is a part otthe bodywall of the container` and `not a `projecting portion of the body blank. o o

A further object of the invention is to provide a -oontainer of the above type with an inserted collar which is so shaped in the region of the tearing strip to permit the insertion of a tool through a formed opening in the body wall for breaking the body wall at the end of the tearing strip.

Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of a container embodying the improvements;

Figure 2 is a similar view of a portion of the body Wall showing an opening formed `in the body wall for the insertion of a tool used for rupturing the metal and forming a free end in the tearing strip on which a key may be placed for removing the tearing strip.

Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the metal of the body wall ruptured and the freed end of the tearing strip lifted preparatory to the attachment of a key thereto.

Figure 4 is a view in `side elevation of a key which may be used for rupturing the `,metal and lifting the freed end of the tearing ,istrip and also for removing the tearing strip. j

The container is preferably made` of sheet metal and the body wall is formed from a blank the edges of which are joined in a'. l`side seam. The body wall is indicated at I in thedrawings and the side seam is indicated at 2. shown, the side seam is of the usual'lock or' lap type, although it will be understood that the invention is not limited to the character of the side seam and thi-s side seam may be a lap seam throughout. l

This score lin`e"9 is circular and sets ofi a portion of the body wallwhicii rriay be readily ruptured by pressure applied to the outer face of the can body so as to provide a hole through the body wall when it is desired to open thecontainer.

When the body wall is ruptured along the score line 9 an opening I0 is formed. The score line 8 is curved preferably about the center of the opening I0 and, as noted, extends all the Way from one score line 1 to the other score line 1.

This score line 8 sets oi the end of the tearing of the key is a projecting member I3 which is preferably tapered toward its free end. When it is desired to open the container this projecting portion of the key is pressed against the center of the scored portion 9 and the metal ruptured along the score line 3. `This will form the hole ID. The key is then inserted in the hole and, since the projection I3 thereof is of a length substantially equal to the distance between the score line 9 and the score line 8, the extreme end I4 of said projection will lie close to the score line 8 but at theleft of the same as viewed in Figure 1. A rotation of the key will bring pressure to bear on the inside of the body wall ad jacent the score line 8 and this will rupture the metal along the score line 8 and also to a short distancealong the score line 1, thus forming the freed end of the tearing strip. The key is then removed and the slot I5 in the shank of the key is placed over the freed end of the tearing strip and,` by rotating the key in the usual way, the tearingstrip will be rolled onto the key and will be completely removed thus releasing the upper portion of the container from the lower portion thereof.

I claim:
