s Claims. (Cl. 229-31) The invention relates to boxes constructed of sheets of cardboard or the like, which are designed to carry certain articles of merchandise in a tidy and eifective manner. The invention further relates to boxes of `this general kind which are formed from a single sheet scored and margined to fold into a container, but more particularly in this instance to fold into a closed container for millinery or the like; and has for its objects the provision of a boxof this kind which will not only be ornamental but will be lsimple of construction, economical to manufacture and assemble, and highly efficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a plan View of a blank of cardboard suitably margined and scored, from which the container embodying the invention may be easily and quickly formed;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the container when formed and ready for use;
Figure 3-is a perspective view of the container when open and in the process of assembly;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a fragmentary .portion of a side rail and the novel locking mechanism;
Figure 5 is a section taken on line 5--5 of Figure 3; and
Figure 6 is an'enlarged section taken on line E--G of Figure 3.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings envisions a blank I0 of cardboard or the like comprising a base portion II and a cover portion I2. The cover portion I2 comprises a top panel I3, side Walls I4 and I5 and a panel Iii forming the face of the said cover I2. The side walls I4 and I5 and the panel I6 are arranged vertically with the corner sections I I and I8 folded and lapped against the inner side of the panel I6 with tongues I9 and 20 projecting inwardly from the sections I1 and I8, in position, respectively, to be covered by an apron panel 2 I, where it may be fastened, if desired, by staples or the like. The panel I6 is provided with a slotted opening 22 having contiguous angular notches 23 and 24 forming lips 25 and 26 which, when in closed position, form latching means for a handle 21.
The base portion II of the box comprises a bottom panel joining a rear wall 3| which is foldably hinged to the top panel I3 of the cover portion I2. A front panel 32 of the base II has an integrally formed handle 2l of double thickness provided with a hand hole 33. The handle 2l, having shoulders 34 and 35, is arranged and adapted, when folded, to .pass through the slot ,22 in the panel I6 where the said shoulders 34 and 35 are latchably held by the lips 25 and 26 of the cover portion I2.
Attached to the bottom 30, on opposite sides thereof, are suitable side walls 35 and 3l, each provided at their top with a side rail 38 extending the full length thereof, and when in assembled position extend inwardly. At the top of said base I I each of therails 38 are provided at both of their ends with rectangular flaps 39 having suitable button tabs 40 at their inner margins. When the base portion is assembled, similarly folding corner panels 4I vlie parallel to the rear wall 3|, or to the front panel 32, asthe case may be, with projecting tongues 42 and 42 overlapping. Each of the corner panels 4I is also provided with a suitable hole 43 which, when in folded position permits the passing of a button tab 40 inwardly in erected position and engagement therewith. It is further to be noted that the flaps 39 being rectangular, their position against the adjacent side wall serves to hold the side rail 38 in horizontal position, and by means of the button tab in the hole 43 serves to lock the corner structure in engaged and cooperative position. The overlapped tongues 42 and 42 are held in place by a ap 45 carried by one of the panels 4I, as best shown in Figure 6;
It is further to be noted that one of the tongues 42 carries a button tab 4I! which, when assembled,
passes through the hole 43 of the other tongue 42. In the assembly of the corner panel 4I and the tabs 39 of the rails 38, it is to be noted that the said tabs 39 are placed between the inner surface of rear wall 3I and the corner panel 4I. Suitable thumb notches 44 are formed on the upper edges of the corner panels 4I to facilitate the entrance of the tab 39 into juxtaposition with the said wall 3I The front of the base portion II is provided v with a front panel 32 from which is cut the handle 21, and comprises an inwardly folding reinforcing tab 49, and end folding reinforcing members 50, as best shown in Figures 1 2 and 3. A panel 5I is hinged at the outer edge 52 of the handle 21, and when in erected position has its outer marginal edge 53 pushed backward in line with the scoring 54 and held in place by two tabs 55. The corner panels 4I at the front of the base Il are provided with overlapping tongues 42, which are attached together and to panel 5I in alignment therewith, with the tabs 55 folded over the upper edge, as will be readily understood. The corner panels 4l are folded inward over end wall 32, and stitched to end panel 5I.
While I have illustrated and described a specic form for carrying my invention into effect, I do not wish to be limited by these very precise details, .but desire to avail myself of such variations in the combinations and arrangements of parts as may come within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A box of integral construction comprising la cardboard blank margined and scored to fold into a cover portion having a top panel; side Walls on opposite sides of said top panel; a front panel arranged outwardly of said top panel; an apron v`on the louter yend of .said front panel; corner isections between :said side walls and .said front p-anel adapted to .fold against the inner face thereof; .a tongue member carried by .each .opposite corner member arranged and adapted Vto project inwardly in overlapped and rela-tive gripping posi- .oi each side wall; rectangular folding flaps car'- ried at each end of each side rail arranged and adapted to .be folded into pocket .engagement with diagonally folding corner members at each corner of said `base portion; and button means forming a part of each of ksaid folding flaps arranged in position to engage the innermost corne-r 4 Y member at each corner; there being in each of said innermost corner members a hole to receive said button means.
2. In a box of integral construction having a base portion With a rear Wall adapted to hingedly support a folding cover portion; a bottom panel connected to a front handle carrying wall; side Wall joined to opposites of said bottom; diagonally -f'olding corner members lat each corner of :said base portion; a side rail at the t'op of each side wall adapted to be arranged in horizontal position; a rectangular tab carried at each outer end of each side rail adapted to be folded between the said diagonally folding corner members; a button tab forming a portion of each rectangular tab at the outer edge thereof ;l there being an opening inthe innermost portion of said diagonally folding corner member arranged and adapted to engage said button tab.
3Tliey construction specied in claim 2 in which eachinnermost folding Imember is provided with, an outwardly extending tongue arranged and adapted to overlap its end when in folded position with its companion member.
