This invention relates to an improved form of chair or seat, particularly of the metal variety The object of the invention is to provide a strong, light, easily manufactured and assembled chair.

In the accompanying drawings is shown a chair constructed in accordance with the invention:

Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the chair;

Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawing, the chair comprises a seat I which is provided with a depending side flange 2 along each side thereof, to which are attached the legs 3 and the back supports 4. Preferably the seat 1 consists of a metal pan or shell la covered with leather or fabrikoid, and provided with padding between the shell and the covering, as shown in Fig. 4.

Attached to the back supports 4 is a back rest 5. The legs 3 and back supports 4 are preferably metal tubing, the legs on each side of the chair being made of a single piece of tubing bent to substantially a U-shape, with the base of the U lying along the flange 2. The back supports are each bent so that the lower portion thereof projects through an aperture in the downwardly extending rear portion of the seat and extends along the inner side of the side flange 2 into alignment with part of the adjacent leg 3, thus permitting attaching both the back support and leg together through the side flange by means of the same fastening medium, i. e., the bolts 6 and the studs 1 cooperating therewith. The bolts 6 have an interiorly threaded shank which is screwed over the threaded portion of the studs 7.

In assembling the chair, the head of the studs 1 is inserted into a keyhole" slot 8 in the leg 3 at a point where the slot is sufflciently wide to permit passage of the stud head, and the stud is then slid laterally to a portion of the slot which is sufiiciently narrow that the side edges of the slot fit into oppositely disposed flat grooves in the shank of the stud adjacent the head, with the result that the stud cannot rotate in the Number 2 slot, and also cannot fall into the hollow leg, during subsequent assembling operations. The flange 2 is provided with holes to accommodate the shank of the studs 1 as is also the portion of the back support which lies along the flange 2.

The leg 3 is brought alongside the flange 2 so that the studs 7 extend through the aligned openings mentioned in the flange and the back support, whereupon the bolts 6 are inserted through openings in the back support and are screwed onto the studs, thus fastening together the leg, seat, and back support.

Forwardly of the end of the back supports, the legs 3 may also be attached to the flange 2 by additional suitable fastening means (not shown) such as additional studs 1 projecting through REFERENCES CITED The following references are of recordin the file of this patent:
